Hell Valley: Hokkaido Japan travel vlog 2022 (Day 2!) 🚐
In today’s van life vlog we’re continuing our tour of Hokkaido in northern Japan to escape summer in Tokyo. We’re at Jigokudani (“Hell Valley”) in Noboribetsu, which is one of Japan’s most famous onsen towns. The volcanic activity and steam vents in the area are what make these hot springs some of the stinkiest and most popular in Japan. That, and the natural onsen river foot bath!

I think I had been there before. When it comes to hot spring on the mountains, the smell is so strong, along with its hot environment.

地獄谷イイネ、日本には地獄谷は他にも温泉地にはあるよ、登別はスケール大きいですねさすが北海道❣

地獄谷、硫黄の匂いすごいですよね〜笑私も春に地獄谷に行きました！寒くても暖かいからかエゾシカが結構近くをウロウロしてました。温泉には入らなかったので今度は温泉に行きたい！

匂いがけっこ強いですね😅😆 最近たくさんの鹿を見ました！イギリスの鹿と比べると、エゾシカは飼いならされているようです🦌☺️。次回は夏の温泉をお楽しみください！

ババンバ、バンバンバー、アービバゾノ♨️ 登別の周りにも小さな日帰りや湯治♨️が沢山在りますよ🏞️♨️🛣️🚐 時代劇村や熊牧場は行ってないのかな？

The fact it’s so hot and smells so bad is funny though. Such an ARROGANT onsen. Honestly with how stupidly hot it is down southern Japan where I am if it wasn’t for my job we’d love to move to Hokkaido. Weather that doesn’t make me want to die and lots of nature and clean air.

Hell and Hot Springs seem to smell like rotten eggs :D The appearance is wonderfully otherworldly, and I can easily see how the imagination can run wild and end up creating myths and legends from such a place.

The place reminds me of Hell’s gate in Rotorua,New Zealand where I had a mud bath in June,2006. cheers

もしかして7/1に野付半島にいませんでしたか？私は家族で鹿の写真を撮っていたんですが、お二人に似た方が来て…え？って。でもイギリスにまだ帰ってると思っていて、別人にしては似すぎてるなぁと。まさか今北海道にいるなんて！ショック！！一緒に写真撮りたかったぁ～😭 運転に気を付けて北海道満喫してくださいね～♪

I want to onsen so badly but it is just far too hot for me, I wonder why it smelled so bad. At first I thought is it from the onsen eggs but guessing it is the earth. Also both look so happy after the onsen and never been to a milky one.

Onsens in summer is a tough one haha but we definitely needed it after the sweaty walk 😅. The smell was from all the sulfur I think! It’s always exciting going to strange coloured ones haha there’s quite a few rusty coloured ones here thanks to all of the iron-rich volcanic spots too!

Do people ever use the hot springs as an outdoor cooking conduit? Like i bet you could make some delicious slow boiled eggs in that 80 C Iron pond

Oh, absolutely! Onsen eggs are delicious 🤤. There’s some eggs cooked in the sulphuric vents of Hakone that are famous for their black shells and umami taste, but the ones slow cooked in onsen water are the best 😍

北海道にようこそ。登別の地獄谷は、昔は柵のすぐそばまで温泉が湧いてたり、煙が出てたりしいて数十分見てるだけで頭が痛くなる程すごかったんですが、80年代頃に柵を超えて中に入る事による自殺者が数人でて、それ以来危険なところは火山灰で埋められちゃいました。そのせいもあって、今はかなりおとなしくなっちゃいましたね。ビデオのその寄りかかった手すりのすぐ下で人が死んでます・・
