Since its founding in the Nara period, it has been burned down twice during wars, in the Jisho and Eiroku periods, and the current building was rebuilt in the Edo period by the monk Kokei. However, the size of the Great Buddha Hall in the Tenpyo and Kamakura periods was 11 bays (approximately 88m), but due to financial difficulties, it was reduced to 7 bays. Even so, its height and depth remain the same as when it was first built, making it one of the largest wooden structures in the world.
