Down the Spine of Japan, with Stephen Pern. Walking the length of Japan adventure and exploration. Please donate to my channel: www.paypal.com... Thank You
Wow! I saw it when it aired on PBS in 1990! I taped it on VHS and watched 100’s of times! But I lost the tape years ago. Thanks for uploading this gem!
Having watched and enjoyed the delightful Hooks and recent Time on Legs I was late catching up with this adventure in Japan. I enjoyed it enormously and, again, with admiration for the miles covered and the varied encounters with remarkable landscapes and people. A delight.
I've just read Stephen's account of walking the Continental Divide in the early 1980s and enjoyed his responsive and sensitive writing so much - one of the best. Good to now be able to put a face to the words and understand his ability to form relationships with different lands and peoples.
Thank you for posting this remarkable film which like the comment from Joel below I saw in the early 1990's one night on British Television. I was mesmerised. You can see that Stephen Pern is very much happier up in the mountains than the urban areas (but they make a great contrast) - "I feel like japan is walking through me, not me walking through Japan" - a brilliant comment.
