@@samcavanagh7993 I don't agree with your conclusions. I think that both are equally healthy/unhealthy in their pursuit of music perfection. What I could interpret from the video they never mentioned the second mans profession. A lawyer earns quite a lot of money and no numbers were presented on how much the lawyer had spent on his speakers whereas there was no information about the second mans salary/income and only about how much he spent. There is nothing wrong with prioritizing his music equipment over apartment space if that's what you want to do. I don't see how taking good care of your garments and having a passion is unhealthy?

@anotherpos8704
@anotherpos8704 4 года назад
I think there are 2 categories of audiophile: the first listen to classical music and want to exactly audibly recreate the recording in sound stage, tone etc. The second are more interested in the presentation, for example very fast planar panels, multiple massive woofers that extend below 20hz flat, the experience is about feeling and enjoying the music delivery more than the actual song itself. They dont care if the top end rolls off a bit to make 140dB music levels more comfortable. I love to listen to DSDs at night, but during the day it's more about cranking it up and laughing at the washing up falling off the sink.

I've travelled down the audiophile path. When you first make the decision to get audiophile headphones and equipment it's absolutely mindblowing listening to your favourite albums, it's like you're hearing them for the first time all over again such is the difference in quality. You hear things you've never heard before, putting a completely different spin on interpreting and enjoying the music. When you first make the leap you'll marvel at the fact that you can close your eyes and feel like the lead singer is singing right in front of you live (like they're singing into your ear), you can actually hear where the different musicians are 'on stage' and it's like you're at a little mini concert just for yourself. That might sound exaggerated however it's one-hundred percent true, listening is believing. However if you're not careful you can fast forward a few years and find yourself with maxed-out credit cards, no personal life and a house designed entirely around the movement and reverberation of air. Your life has become about fretting about the exact placement of a component because of some esoteric pseudoscience that says if your balanced cables touch the floor at any point, clarity will be attenuated 0.00000000001 percent and you'll lose a touch of your midrange. You'll be spending £2000 on special, magical pagan cultist cables blessed by Reznor, the audiophile god that have gold wiring wrapped in platinum threads and coated in a patented diamond spray that ensures excellent low-end performance without compromising on the mids and highs. You'll also have £50,000 Sennheiser HE-1 electrostatic headphones and £250,000 speakers AND bailiffs chasing you down for the unpaid balances on the 234 different credit cards, overdrafts and loans you're struggling to repay. You won't have a wife, girlfriend or children because that flesh will dampen the way the sound waves reach your ears. Most importantly, however, is the realisation that you no longer actually LIKE music anymore because all you hear is the 'flaws' in your rig. Instead of sitting back and enjoying The Downward Spiral or Dark Side of The Moon you'll be fiddling with knobs and EQ settings, whilst slightly adjusting the placement of your adamantium woofer. I beg you, IF you decide to experiment with audiophile grade sound equipment/hi-fi's PLEASE DON'T PROGRESS INTO THE LATTER! You'll turn into a hi-fi cultist who hates music (which is exactly the opposite of why you got into audiophile equipment to begin with). This has been a public safety announcement.

Actually this is something that is totally true about electricity, there are all kinds of voltage and amperage fluctuations as well as noise from digital electronics or things like blenders, that feedback noise in different harmonic frequencies back into the grid, not to even mention EMI and RFI. I have personally used something called a noise sniffer that amplifies noise from various outlets. I would say it is akin to drinking unfiltered water that is being fed from sewage. I have used line conditioning products and actually used to be an audiophile dealer. Trust me your incoming AC is one of the biggest culprits for bad sound. listen at midnight on a Sunday and hear how much better your stuff will sound.
@gavincurtis
@gavincurtis 6 лет назад
Zach, I do agree. There is a lot of noise in AC power. Especially nowadays with everything having a switch mode power supply. TRIAC dimmers as well as inverters in modern appliances (microwaves and washers with brushless motors). It all makes for very energy efficient appliances, but they really put out the noise. The guy actually did the right thing with the separate pole transformer based on his budget availability and dedication to his hobby of interest.

Hell I would rather have, and be much happier with, $95,000 of high end stereo than those purses and shoes, but most don't call that fanatical. Many envy that purse and shoe collection. Not to mention, a vast majority of this high end stuff does not lose much in value. They can enjoy this stuff for 15 years and sell it for close if not more than they paid for it. I guess some fanatical stuff is just more accepted than others because clothes and shoes probably have many more fanatics then high end audiophiles lol.

Having money doesn't mean you worked hard for it. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Most people working for minimum wage work their asses off, while most rich people sit on their asses while the numbers in their accounts climb.
@mrhoffame
@mrhoffame 7 лет назад
***** That is such a ideological way of thinking. A good majority of wealthy people did not just walk down the street and one day find a huge pile of money sitting in a suitcase. A huge number of them are wealthy because they took risk and that most people are not willing to take. They were willing to bet all they had on a idea and sacrifice whatever they had to see it through. I work in the financial service industry and I have a extremely successful practice now. Making more money than I ever did. ...but when I left a stable job to take this chance of starting my own business no one was there or complaining when things weren't going well, when my $250/ month car go repoed, when my $125k house went into forclosure and I had to sell, when my lights were shut off for 3 days because I couldn't pay the bill. When I pawne stuff to eat. I've owned my own business and I have worked at Hardees, Taco Bell, Long John Silvers, The Buckle, etc so I've been on both ends. Trust me, that minimum wage stuff was 1000% easier than running your own business. People like you only look at the a person like that when the success hits and then says...oh they don't work hard they just sit on their money? My brother is becoming a pretty successful actor in Hollywood. You would probably say he is lucky and on easy street. Yet, where were you when for 3 years he was living in a hell hole with 7 people? Got bitten by rats 3 times in his bed? After so much time and working for years he didn't even have $1.50 in his bank account to rent his own first movie out of the redbox when it came out...but now if you see him driving in new benz you say...he didn't work hard. He just sits on his money? They day you give up and sell everything you own and pursue a dream that has no hourly wage, no set pay, and no benefits and even after you sacrifice all there is HUGE change of failure...then you come back let's talk about working hard.
@pearlmax
@pearlmax 7 лет назад
I'm talking about physical labor for a low wage. Devoting 80 hours a week to work as some people are forced to do for whatever reason. Not working for the damn Yum corporation. I'm also not talking about being poor while trying to start your own business. So why are you telling me about your financial struggles? You can be dirt poor and not work at all. Just because your car got repossessed, you lost your house, ect doesn't mean you were working hard. Maybe you were, but it is insignificant in relation to what I am talking about. I also did not say people just stumble on money. The point is, in general, the higher paying the job, the more desirable the position is, the more freedom you have, the more money you save, the more money you invest, the more money you accrue. Probably shouldn't have said minimum wage, as you assumed I was talking about people who flip burgers, go home, smoke an 1/8 and play video games online.
@mrhoffame
@mrhoffame 7 лет назад
***** Simply put...you are telling me your comment didn't imply that wealthier people don't work as hard as others? Or were you saying something totally different that I didn't get? My impression is when I said these guys worked hard for their money so enjoy it how they like... your response seemed to simply state they don't work hard. That their money just works for them. Well, where do you think THAT money came from in the first place?
@pearlmax

Everyone has their own personal ideas on how things work, but in reality and research, results are proven. For instance, the AC that feeds all of his audio gear is changed inside each individual piece to DC, or "direct current," through a thing called rectification. This is then sent too some large filter capacitors (hum and noise removal) then out to the rest of the circuitry. The AC is completely changed to DC and filtered internally in each unit. This is common with most electronic items in your house. If you think the noise will get through that filtering system, your ears are better than most pieces of test equipment that can see and hear well beyond what our analog ear drums can. If you think the noise from your power source (AC line to pole) is bad, you should see what the switch mode power supply in most all modern audio equipment produces. This hash and noise is also filtered out with capacitors and inductors (also known as reactors) internally in each unit. Once the magic is removed, things are pretty straight forward..... Some want to hold on to that magic, and I respect that! Take care.

Mr Carlson's Lab new audiophile here. I listen to headphones, when I first got my nice dac and amp i plugged to into the same strip as my pc. Later on while i was listening i heard this hum, like a neighbor had a vaccum cleaner on. I was convinced it was them and when i took off my headphones it was just coincedence they were shutting off the vaccum cleaner. Turns out it was actually a ground loop being created between my pc and the amp. I plugged the amp into another outlit, and now havent had the problem sense. Idk what 'science' you are reading but not everything in audio is converted to dc, and you can put yourself in scenarios where you hear distortion from your power source.

@waverly2468
@waverly2468 6 лет назад

@ursaproxima
@ursaproxima 3 года назад
@@blackstarnevershines Can you say for sure? Why wouldn't he just use those words instead? Also, the noise/hum of most recordings will be louder than the noise floor of any of your equipment, especially on vinyl that has been played more than 0 times. Grounding doesn't require that you buy any of the gimmicks that he owns, just a grounded outlet will suffice...

The obsessive fetish with vinyl is something I'll probably never understand. But I grew up with CDs as I'm only 23 so that'll probably explain it. Some people treat anything they invest time and money in like a religion. They regard it infalliable and superior regardless of reality. They spent thousands on vinyl records and equipment so accepting the humiliating defeat of newer, better technology which renders their efforts a mistake where they could have just waited for better technology. When today you can buy a good DAC and 24-bit, DSD records, CD-quality that is just better than vinyl in every way. Besides perhaps the nostalgia and "established state"of vinyl. You can't "scratch" a digital mix panel in the same way I guess. But still the obsession with vinyl is an anachronism in denial of newer and better I feel.

steam steam vinyl is an experience man. Its not just about the sound its the entire process, of taking the record out cleaning it, cleaning the needle cueing the record. Then you enjoy the sound. For a while I didn't get it till I got some vintage records from the 60s it sounds unreal. With a good audio system its so warm and the bass is so tight and alive sounding. A well engineered record makes you feel like you're there. And the entire process of prepping the record is extremely relaxing and helps you unwind. This is all stuff you can't get from digital media. Digital media is about instant gratification, there is no challenge, no passion that goes into listening. That's what its about. Its more than something you can write down on paper.

To get clean AC power all that is required is to use a Balanced Power Isolation Transformer which costs about US $2,000, probably an order of magnitude cheaper than a dedicated "power pole". The pole actually has nothing to do with it, the difference was a dedicated step-down transformer. Just as an ordinary matter in the way power is distributed to my house (underground line)I have my own dedicated step-down transformer. Before remodeling I shared a transformer with my neighbor's house. When I remodeled and upped my system to 500 Amperes capacity the utility installed a transformer for my residence only. I also use a BPIT in my studio which feeds all audio equipment, both digital and analog.
