This video is an in depth process of the tuning of my Japanese chisels (oire nomi / 追入れ鑿). I had not seen too much detail into how to set up the chisels properly (there are many blogs and books out there, but not many videos on this subject!) so I thought I would contribute to the fantastic community in hopes someone looking to tune their chisels finds the information they were looking for. Like, subscribe and comment your thoughts, or woodworking questions, below. Your time here is very much appreciated!

You had me till I saw your beat on a finished machine surface, that's anvils are for! Even if you put your Vise draw together tightly you could have beaten on that not sure of your thinking here? Also will you hit the handle off why didn't you strip it and refinish it?

There were many tools I did not have last year and still don't have, anvil being one or them. As for the stripping, hadn't really occurred to me, wasn't too concerned with the finish, was just trying to get the chisels fitted so I could begin using them.

How long do you soak the top of the handle in water?

It's really quick. The wood should immediately spring back once put in the water. No longer than 15 seconds I would say.

You don't need to flatten the back? I couldn't find the kanaban flatten plate in the US

Man, doesn't the way the stone go all over the place mess with sharpening?

I know it looks awful! But it doesn't bother the process, at least doesn't affect the end result. I've since made a holder for more stability.

He's working in the lid of a container! Overall good idea you could do the same thing with a cookie pan which would be easier to clean I would think than the lid to your stone container!

Also to me maintain a plane you can't have the stone wobbling all over the place! Should be on a hard surface or plane or surface of the stone doesn't move!

Sometimes I sharpen on a wobbly surface. Brings the stone to the Angle of the edge if you do it correctly

Is your genno a Kozaburo?

I wish! It is a Masayuki.

@@TetomeHouse Doshinsai? He's works are pretty easy to get unlike Hiroki Aida which like a "near infinite" wait list

@@jonazanteo I believe it's Baba Masayuki. His stuff is much easier to find, a little pricey, but certainly better than waiting for Aida or a Kozaburo to suddenly appear.

@@TetomeHouse ah yes its definitely him, goes by either Baba Masayuki or Masayuki Doshinsai, and he and Aida were Kozaburo's students. Aida is more in towards Kozaburo's philosophy in the traditional method of forging, compared to Masayuki whom bridges towards modern styles. There is another Baba, Baba Matsura, he's passed on already, also another traditional style smith. Not as pricy as Masayuki.
