Japanese Culture in Yautja Lore 

"Viking", aka "Heathen" culture also influences the tribal nature of the Yautja. Especially their Honor code of "Blooded" and "Bad blood." Same concept as "Oath keepers" and "Oath breakers" in what is known as "Drengr" Heathen cultures, before "Vikingr" Heathen cultures became a more dominant way of being in Norse tribes. And the sense of "rite-of-passage" that the Yautja uphold for their "unblooded", aka young Yautja that have never hunted a worthy equal, is very much a proto-German, Norse, Celtic and ancient Greek tribal essence. The Lacedaemon, aka Spartan's, called their rite-of-passage the "Agoge." I love how much of Yautja lore is influenced by the Japanese Shinto as well! Awesome watch my friend.

I love how the Yaujta have a connection to almost every culture. Japanese influence is more apparent but there's also traces of Aztec, Viking, Gladiator, and most importantly Rastafarian elements to them. Stan Winston was truly genius when designing this space alien! 💀 Love how diverse they are!

An animated Anthology series based off Predators hunting different creatures ranging from human warriors-soldiers to other alien creatures would be awesome, I'd especially love to see it In Glendy Tartkovsky's style like Samurai Jack and Primal

Great video! I recall reading an interview with the original authors that said the Predators were a cross between African warriors and Spartans, but I can definitely see the heavily inspired Japanese influence 😎👍

Another thing that could be a great idea would be an anime following a seasoned warrior yautja and it would follow him hunting alien species from other planets

The main reason for predators to activate their bombs is to make sure there is no evidence and so that others can not learn from their technology as in most of the comics. The protagonists r sometimes people who have gained the technology been able to advance themselves and their region or planet. In some cases they even use it to hunt other predators. So it makes sense a predator would do whatever it could to stop this from happening.

There a lot of Native American influences in the predator culture, especially taking of trophies

I’ve always wanted to see Native American culture in the Predator doctrine. We have many stories where The Predators set out to undo the perversions of human science. They have a respect for the natural world and natural order, and revere their prey the Xenomorphs in much the same way Native Americans did the Buffalo I want to see them use fire to conjure images/spiritual guidance, and other cool stuff

Would also be interesting to explore why Predators do not believe in having robots or mutants as part of their culture.. Possibly creating a storyline where Predators would go to war with species that embrace robots and mutants as part of their civilizations' progress thinking that "transhumanism" is an abomination..

Awesome presentation bro,there seems to be a lot of cultural similarities in honour/warrior code,but in the hunt to truly stand out,only the highly valued prey such as kiande amedha (hard meat) or oomans ( soft meat) which is the alien and humans are the best way to improve your ranking in the yautja clan,more apprised to being the best sportsman and only taking on the best is how you get recognition.

I just wanna see a comic or short story of the yautja facing down the romans or the Macedonians under Alexander The Great.

I know this vid is 2 years old but it popped up in my recommendations and still want to leave a comment, this video got me thinking about different warrior cultures, I wonder if other yautja subspecies/species take influence from different warrior cultures, example, I have a feeling the Feral Predator's species, the Desert Yautja, have some influence from Greek and Roman soldiers, namely Spartans, Hoplites, and Centurions, as Feral was equipped with a shield and spear, even though he didn't use them simultaneously, but that doesn't rule out that some Desert Preds may have done so, I know the shield is inspired by Krato's shield in the newer God of War games, which takes place in norse mythology, but I think that only counts regarding it's ability to fold and unfold, that and Kratos is a Spartan. it also makes me wonder if Super Predators (which I like to call Brute Predators to avoid confusion with other Preds that are also called Super Preds) could've have some influence from Norse berserkers, aswell as modern hunting tactics mixed in, such as using hounds to flush out prey, and drones to track prey, there's even some Japanese culture influence in Brute Preds to, since their wrist blades are a single long blade, which does remind me of Katanas and other related blade types. there's many more warrior cultures that are often pushed aside due to the popularity of the more well known ones to, perhaps there could be some inspiration from those cultures to once day.

Did some more research, seems the anime was finished and ready to go months ago but it was in court before the fox Disney merger. But since Disney doesn’t own the rights to be able to stream it, that lies with Netflix. It’s down to Disney purchasing the rights, though I’ve heard people mention Disney putting it on Hulu.. why would they do that when Disney+ is more global now that U.K. finally had access to it 6 months or so later than everyone else. Maybe it won’t be family friendly. Anyway the sad thing is it’s finished and just needs to be put up on Netflix. Not sure why they don’t put it to DVD or BluRay. Just hope they release it soon so it gets the attention it deserves. Rather than a year or two later when we’ve all forgotten about it. Here is hoping a petition will be put up soon as I’m sure a fair amount of people would sign it. Shame we do not know more that we do so all we can do is hate Disney and Netflix.

I’m only like 3 minutes in and it already feels like you are grasping at straws. So what they’ve been in Japan? The predators have been everywhere so idk why putting them in japan is so significant. And the top knot? Really? Overall the predators design and lore is for the most an original thought with no cultural influence. I also hate how many times I hear “this could be an anime!” Like shut up. If anything the only influence of any kind on lore is Aztec or Egyptian type of things.

I think at its base, Japanese culture is really easily applicable to Yautja lore. I mean, hunters who follow a strict honor code, killing only the worthy, serving under retainers, and honing their skills and proving themselves in battle, and ritualistically killing themselves if they lose to maintain their honor? That's almost the spitting image of an idealized samurai. So, I think that it's easy to include Japanese culture into the Yautja lore for the main reason of our subconscious connections that we make. Another possible reason is how foreign Japanese culture is to a lot of Europeans and Americans. In school, we're hardly ever taught the ins and outs of Asian history, let alone the specifics of Japanese culture. It's also a part of reason why so much European culture is included in Japanese creations. Sword Art Online is made how it is because knights and kingdoms and goblins and trolls of European variations are so alien in that environment, so it's encapsulating. I think there's a similar effect here, as the Yautja are meant to be fascinating and different and not have much known about them, and impressing that Japanese culture onto them and their character development as individuals or even as an entire species gives us another subconscious connection to make and impression of mysterious familiarity.

Actually predator is more African and South American lore...Don't get it twisted when Winston made predator he was thinking an alien creature that knows the bush. Its other writers making that connection to Japanese culture. I am soooooo sick of shit alien vs predator..I wish it never happened...This is why cross over are a goddamn sin.

The stern, strict code of honour definitely mark the similarities between both cultures. The Lost Tribe from P2 is the most obvious reference when looking at their armor compared to the Jungle Hunter and Super Predators as in the novel version Greyback cuts off the City Hunters head instead of Harrigan killing him to maintain his honour in death.

Before this video existed I always have categorize them with the Samurai Warriors. For their presence reminds me of Samurai clad in its intimidating armour and pure badassness.

Why haven’t we heard more about this, also why is there no petition asking Netflix, Disney or fox to release it

One thing, seppuku was done with wakizashi, not tantó. Women used tantó to cut their throats or in some cases stomach, just like men.

Because it’s Awesome and there are tons of lone Samurai stories and tons of cool stories of Yautja as lone hunters.

Hot damn, another awesome video. This one was intriguing, as I've noticed for a long time the similarities between japanese culture and the Yautjas. The story you mentioned that involved real historical characters and settings really caught my interest. Gotta look that one up and read it for myself. The story, setting and how the ninja came to be all sounded very interesting, as I hold the ninja very dear to my heart. Grew up watching old kung fu/ninja flicks with my dad as a kid, and ended up really loving the concept of The Ninja

Hello schiz, really enjoying your videos on yautja lore. It has inspired me to become more immersed in the franchise specifically the comics/novelizations/short stories since I own all the movies Is there a good resource/place to track down and purchase all these stories? I am very new to comics.

Sadly... the anime is locked up in legal issues, with no release in site. I really hope it gets leaked at least, I love avp and a anime would be a dream come true. Disney should throw fans a bone, and at least sell it on DVD, but netflix has the rights, so both won't give up their hold on it.

I'm from NYC and I was wondering if you can do a Characterpedia on the East Coast City Hunter as depicted in the Concrete Jungle comic (the one who goes hand to hand with Dutch's brother)? It's the only Predator story that takes place in my home town. Maybe even tackle the comic series in general while you're at it??
