🥪 We just eyeballed this recipe but if you want an official recipe, lmk! Japanese egg sandwiches have a mellow flavor, but really tasty. I think it relies on good shokupan (Japanese milk bread) and creamy Kewpie mayo.

Japanese woman here 🙋‍♀️. We use 1 to 3 ratio. 1 egg white and 3 egg yolks,a little real butte rand no milk . When you smash the egg yolks,add a tiny bit of real butter,mayo,a little yellow mustard,pinch of sugar,salt and white pepper. Too much egg whites can make the egg salad watery later and your bread soggy if you pack your tamago sando a couple hours before eating

Just googled where to buy and it’s available for £122 on Etsy. Nice to know, but way out of my price range for salt. I’ll stick to Maldon for now 😏 .

I’m from Denmark and the only thing that stands out from how we make our egg salad is we add a tiny bit of curry. Other than that it’s the same. It’s sooo good 😍

I'm Swedish but lived and worked in Denmark for some years. Really liked some of the different sandwich salads in Denmark, especially egg salad and even more so if I found egg salad without curry! I really hate curry and consider it a spice that can ruin a perfectly good egg salad, chicken salad or any other dish it's sprinkled into 🤢

Curry is excellent but only if it’s Keens style curry and I’d only use it in egg salad. Not with anything else..

if you have the time, i separate the yolks from the whites and mix that with the mayo+milk+seasonings, and then i chip the whites and fold it in!

I've been making those since I was a little girl. My grandmother used to make those for lunch at work. We simply called them egg sandwiches. I'm not Japanese. It's amazing how different cultures make the same foods.

I've had Western and Japanese egg sandwiches. They're similar but different. Japanese egg sandwiches are softer and a little more moist. They start with Shokupan which looks like sandwich bread but is softer. An essential part is wrapping them in plastic for 30 mins for the bread to absorb moisture. I much prefer the Japanese version.

Omg I love these so much! They’re an easy snack whenever I’m feeling tired or lazy, When I first went to America I didn’t know that you could buy kewpie mayo so it never tasted as good with the sour mayo that America has

Ive been eating and making egg sandwiches since i was a youngin, but mine, i now know have just been basic egg sandwhichs 😅 just eggs, mayo, mustard and some seasonings. I have never tried it with milk or as some others stated in the comments butter or sugar. Now i gotta try this out!! I love egg sandwiches so much! Thank you for sharing!

After making egg salad with Kewpie mayo, I can’t ever eat it with regular mayo again. It is SO umami. I like to add finely chopped green onions to it as well, and I can happily eat an entire bowl of it, no bread needed🤤

There is an Iranian dish similar, not really that much lol It's called: *Salad oliviere* I think it is French inspired It's mashed eggs, pieces of chicken or shredded, mini gherkins or pickled cucumber, (I don't know if there's potato cubes in it, and maybe olives as well, since it is called salad oliviere ;) It takes ages to cook it though. So this is a good quick & go👌

I only add mayonnaise(Kraft), mustard(French's) and black pepper. I eyeball everything. Most of my family loves them.(leave the whites, in halves, to the side and make deviled eggs same way.) I also make tuna salad the same way just with a can or two of tuna in water from Chicken of the Sea. (Sometimes add onion powdered or chopped red onions.)

I have to try to find kewpie mayo because I don’t think Oklahoma Walmart would have that. Sounds Delicious. Thanks. I usually just have hard boiled eggs, the regular real hellmans brand mayonnaise and some prepared yellow mustard. And that’s it. Salt and pepper to taste of course.

If you have costco or a friend with Costco membership, have them look for you. I bought it and hated it. It is creamy and rich, but it's got an overwhelming mustard taste that just doesn't cut it for me. I had radation therapy and it really messed with my taste buds. Mustard I used to love and now can not stand. But for a very rich thick mayo that is usually found around the US look for Dukes. I tend to only use Hellmans as I grew up with it and it's my favorite but Dukes is really nice too. But the price tends to scare you a bit 😆 If you have an immersion blender you could try making your own egg yolk rich mayo. I do enjoy making it myself. I just don't use it as fast as it needs to be used when it's fresh lol I watch this Netflix show called "somebody feed phil" he went to Finland and had egg butter. I had to make it and oh my! Its become my new go to for egg sandwiches lol All it is, is 2 to 3 hard boiled eggs chopped very fine with 2 tablespoons of the very best butter you can afford. For me that's Irish or Amish butter. A pinch of good flaky salt and black pepper if you like. I do occasionally add a bit of finely chopped chives or garlic chives if I've been out in the garden. It's so rich and yummy. It's great on toast or crackers too. I'm underweight so I eat it a few times a week. But understand if folks ate on diets. 😅

It reminds me of an American egg salad sandwich. I’m American and grandparents and parents made these sandwiches. I still eat them till this day. Same with tuna fish sandwiches made in the similar style.

Yes! I have this in USA! Always made it. We called egg salad sandwich, we didn't add suger, we use mayo from Walmart. So good!

Yup! Love a good egg salad sandwich! We used just eggs, mayo, mustard (I prefer honey mustard, but any will suit), sweet relish, and Lawry's season salt. Ratios vary on personal preference.

Mash the yolk separately. It will be extra creamy and not chunky that way. I use a dinner fork to smash them. Cut the crust off first. Roll up the crust and put in little muffin tins. Make french toast or cinnamon rolls with them. Yum!

We just call it egg mayo here in the UK I make it all the time. Make 2 runny eggs and the rest hard boil. The runny egg coats it amazingly 😍😍😍

You'll be missing out on the Japanese eggs. I don't know what they do different, but even the basic cheap eggs were better than the high quality eggs in Canada/US

chickens in japan aren’t a different species 🤦‍♂️ eggs are eggs. and they prob put hella chemicals in them if they taste so different. yes japan uses chemicals and highly processed food too.

My grandmother came from a German background and I was told (when presented my deviled eggs and egg salad) that it was a “German way” but we add a bit of vinegar ontop of what you had used here. Sugar is the key. Not too much, but enough to taste. It’s very delicious. I recently started going off from the family recipe and started using a bit of yellow mustard and it’s just as delicious. Has a bit of vinegar but still needs a splash.

I like to add mustard, smoked paprika and dill to mine! (Especially with some pickled veggies served on the side! ❤) I prefer to eat it open faced on toasted bread, but sandwiches are great too. 😊

It used to be my go to at the convenience store on work trips to Japan. I’d get string cheese, iced latte/coffee milk and a few other items for the hotel fridge to have for breakfast (I don’t want to pay for/get up for hotel breakfast). I never knew it’d become such an international phenomenon.

I make it almost exactly the same minus the sugar. I’ve had it with sugar and it’s good, but I prefer without. And I keep the crusts too 😊

I am used to egg sandwiches except we use normal mayo or salad cream and mustard powder (like a teeny bit cause its pretty potent, dont do what i did and taste it straight from the tin), salt, pepper, and finely diced chives. Never added sugar. Since kewpie mayo is already sweet i dont think id like to add more sugar

Where I live the only difference in our egg salad is we add dill weed instead of sugar, plus in my family we also add paprika

The main differences with my Aussie egg sandwich version are that I don’t add sugar and I sometimes add curry powder.

In Midwest USA its egg salad smash your eggs add vinegar, salt, pepper, paprika maybe a little mustard. Great sandwich just hard to keep it from squashing out of the bread.

Bruh SOMEONE tell me what the big deal is about that mayo? Why is it a trend? It tastes nice, but in a barely noticable way to other mayo, and the bottle is suuuuper annoying to deal with when it's almost empty, you get like 10% of the mayo just stuck in there forever 😭 unless you wanna throw liquid in there and use the mixture in soup, but that problem doesnt exist with glass jars!

Totally agree. Kewpie mayo is overrated and the packaging is badly designed. I still prefer Hellman's mayo. If I want to add some zing to it, I'll mix in a little Miracle Whip.

I bought Kewpie mayo after seeing so many recipes using it. I added it to a ham and cheese sandwich, and it was way too eggy. But on an egg salad sandwich, I bet this would work! Hopefully, you saved my $7 😂😅

I make this often but I used low-fat mayo and I never added milk and sugar, very interesting. I want to try adding milk to it but I don’t think I will like the sugar. Sometimes I make this with cottage cheese instead to make it healthier

We make this in America. Eggs, mayo, mustard and salt and pepper. For deviled egg potato salad add smoked paprika and maybe a table spoon of vinegar(optional). It's like one of my favorite meals ever

Make your own shokupan! Easily the best part of any sandwich and a 12" loaf (like 20+ slices) is practically no $. Takes time obvs but not too difficult!

I'm really surprised these have become more popular, I grew up eating them, they were a cheap sandwich filler. I like to put green onion (scallion) in mine and sometimes little bits of tomato. Just an idea for anyone feeling adventurous.

English egg salad is commonly made with Pickles or pickle juice i think it adds so much

Yes! Completely agree with the crust part! That's the only thing that I don't like about Japanese sandwiches. Also, I like making rice balls with the eggs, too.
