Please view previous lessons for additional vocabulary and grammar.
In this lesson, you will learn an introduction to Japanese particles (specifically wa は, ni に, to と and de で). Please be on the lookout for future lessons, where we'll discuss particles further along with more grammar and sentence structure!

Japan Society currently offers 12 comprehensive levels of Japanese, as well as a variety of specialized courses and workshops including shodō (Japanese calligraphy). Courses take place year round with Fall, Spring and Summer semesters along with intensive and specialized courses throughout the year, so please stop by or visit our website for more information.
www.japansociety.org/language_...
Summary:
particle は (wa) = topic marker
ex. Mary goes. = Mary-san は (wa) ikimasu.
particle に (ni) - place + ni = indicates direction/place
ex. Mary goes to Boston. = Mary-san は (wa) Boston に (ni) ikimasu.
particle に (ni) - specific time + ni = indicates specific moment in time
ex. Mary goes to Boston at 3 o'clock. = Mary-san は (wa) Boston に (ni) sanji に (ni) ikimasu.
* For relative time (ex. tomorrow, next week, last year, next month, etc.) you do not use the particle ni. Only use ni for specific time.
particle と (to) - with someone + to = indicates with someone
ex. Mary goes to Boston with her mother. = Mary-san は (wa) Okaasan と (to) Boston に (ni) ikimasu.
particle で (de) - transportation + de = indicates mode of transportation
ex. Mary goes to Boston on a plane. = Mary-san は (wa) hikouki で (de) Boston に (ni) ikimasu.

right? used the numbers lesson to teach my daughter how to count to 100, and she can count to 100 in Japanese easily now, but cannot get past 20 in English, its cute when she stumbles around 20 in English, gets frustrated and finishes counting in Japanese xD

"Ni" here is used because it marks one's goal or destination. Another reason to use "ni" is to indicate the place where a thing(s) or a person(s) is(or are) present. In Lesson 6, we used "de" because it indicates the place where an action occurs. In short, "ni" casts the sight upon a place, while "de" upon an action. As for your second question, it depends on if you put the noun (Mary, for this video) first or if you are going to add the time (tomorrow, yesterday, etc.)

i think the best way i've come to learn the japanese language, is by watching a lot of Studio Gibli movies because I've observed they use complete sentences. I found that a lot of the Anime such as Naruto or Bleach that i love to watch use a lot of slang words, or they shorten a lot of the phrases so its extremely casual, not something that has been recommended to learn for those in beginners levels if you're still building proper sentence structure and vocabulary. But what Japanese anime DOES help with, is getting used to the speed and sound of the language. As well as watching kids cartoons.
@qihuang8568
@qihuang8568 8 лет назад
+doyouzgot2knw you r right, anime has lot slangs , and something like naruto or dragon ball, full of special move names in one episod, thats the japanese word you never use in regular life, so watching japanese tv series is good, they made lot of tv series about solving crime or something

Essentially に and へ are interchangeable for the purposes of Japanese learners and most all Japanese speakers. There are circumstances where a translator or someone at a professor or academic level in Japan may have to make a distinction between the two, but they almost always are interchangeable and neither is more or less polite.
