Lovely Collection of Japanese Maples! I too have a couple of cultivars that you also keep, namely Beni Maiko, Orange Dream and Osakazuki, my Orange dream has never produced Orange Autumnal colours mind you. My Osakazuki top canopy leaves are frazzled like crispy Bacon - due to the two periods of Heatwaves. However, my two Beni Maiko’s, small specimens at that in 12ltr pots, are kept in the shade underneath a mature ornamental Pear Tree and are doing just fine. I hope to expose those to stronger sunshine after they have been potted up again in a few more years. Beautiful trees but they certainly are temperamental with their environmental conditions!
Hi Nicholas and thanks for posting. I find that my Orange dream is probably better in the spring and I have the same thoughts on Osakazuki. I have come to the conclusion this year that the simple "tolerates full sun" or "needs afternoon shade" instructions are too simplistic. I think we need sun tolerance, heat tolerance and wind tolerance as three separate categories really, especially as my Butterfly hates direct sun but was not phased by 35 degree heat... You are 100% correct, its takes practice to get the environment just right! Carl
@@Japanesemaples The Summer heatwaves has been brutal on many of my JMs this season. The only ones which escaped leaf scorch has been those in smaller pots underneath the canopy of my mature Pear Tree. Three other JMs, namely two Jordan’s and one Autumn Moon which are under the canopy of Silver Birch trees also suffered some leaf burn - and at this location you are looking at late afternoon sunshine past 4pm in July for example. Beautiful Trees for sure but if the conditions are not right they suffer. Fingers crossed for a more “stable” weather season next year.
