Dimash always puts his own twist on any song he covers. There is a video of the original singer, Koji Tamaki, on RU-vid. The song itself is very beautiful. Koji Tamaki has an outstanding orchestra accompanying him, but for me, Dimash's voice did not need an orchestra. I love both renditions, Dimash wins out for me.

The song is about Yoshiko Yamaguchi (山口 淑子), a Chinese-born Japanese actress during World War II. She hid her Japanese heritage under the name Li XIanglan. She became famous in China. However, once the war was over and she revealed her identity, she was accused of being a spy and she was deported back to Japan and didn't go back to China for many years, as it was forbidden at that time. Ms Yamaguchi did return to China in her later years as the Japanese Parliamentary Vice Minister of Environment. This song is saying goodbye to her Chinese name Li Xianglan. The song is a metaphore, as lyrics speak of how a person has to hide what feels inside.
