I first started the Tobira books because it was required for my 300-level Japanese classes ten years ago. Unfortunately at the time the head of the department decided that my placement test showed potential for either 301 or 302 and recommended that I take 302... with the strictest, most demanding teacher in the department. In that sink or swim situation, I sank like a rock. I quit and backtracked to 301 the next semester but I never did regain my footing in my college classes. Since then, I’ve spent a fair amount of time living in Japan and I’m decent in conversation (though I haven’t studied formally in years) but I’m looking to improve beyond just talking with people. I’d like to get up to reading light novels comfortably but I’m not there yet. Since I already have the main textbook and kanji book, I figured this would be a good self study tool. I read over the first reading so far and it’s considerably easier than I remember!

Interesting bit about the first exercise Chad showed, for anyone wondering about the grammar point. It's covered in the first chapter of Tobira, the very first grammar point, but what's interesting is that sometimes から can be used, but only when the "material something is made out of is not immediately obvious". An example from the book is チーズやヨーグルトは牛乳からできます because milk is what cheese and yogurt are created from (like plastic is made from petroleum), not like with the building where you can see it's made of concrete. It was interesting to hear Chad's take on this because I, as a non english speaker, didnt think of this connection, since in my native language (Italian) we would use the equivalent of the "of" particle, not the "from" one.

It's cool when you think about patterns of certain languages! A lot of books made by Japanese people follow what they assume makes sense to their targeted reader base, but the tobira series is really good about how it phrases it's sentences for a majority English reader base. It shows the careful skill that went into its construction!

Do you have/ are you planning to make a review video on the Quartet Intermediate Japanese books? Trying to figure out which intermediate textbook I'd like to go with once I finish up Genki I&2.

Is it necessary if you buy the original Tobira book? I just bought Tobira gateway to advanced Japanese 上級へのとびら and I'm not sure if I should buy the これで身につく文法力 Tobira book. How's that 中級から上級への日本語 workbook? Is it better than Tobira?

I enjoyed Tobira grammar and kanji books. There are lots of grammar points in the main textbook. Without these exercises, I would have a hard time applying these points fluently. These exercises converted theoretical grammar (and kanji) points into something that you use to communicate with. The exercises started off easy in part 1, but they became more and more difficult. The later exercises forced me to use multiple grammar points simultaneously. Doing these exercise with a native teacher is helpful to ensure your Japanese is natural. The workbook is not a waste of money.

So if you were to choose one or two... what would you reccomend? I'm leaning for the sao marine and tobira because of the reviews. But the 中きゅlooks more promising. Gonna be touching one these books after genki
@ThatsMyChad

So I haven't delved into the Official main tobira book yet, that's what I'm gonna start reviewing this week for next weeks video, but I'm gonna do a comparison between the two after I go through it to hopefully lend some help in precisely that area! A lot of people choose either one or the other

I'm really interested in your review of the main textbook, Chad. I'm nearing the end of self-study of Genki I and figure I'll have to make a choice between Tobira and Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese in a few months when I think I might be able to wrap Genki II up. And Integrated Approach sounds like a great book from both your review and the review LangFocus did too. I could care less about any difference in price unless it was something like one is $250 and the other is $30, since I figure the main cost of either book is going to be the time I put into it. So whichever book looks better, irrespective of value per dollar, is the one I'd be most interested in.

Homer Thompson that’s my video next week actually! So long as I finish my script in time haha
@LeoSkyro
@LeoSkyro 4 года назад
From what I've heard Integrated Approach is fairly classroom-y like Genki, and a bit more "simplified" than Tobira. Tobira has a lot of grammar points every chapter and the reading sections are definitely a challenge at first coming from Genki, but I myself tried to read the texts several times throughout the period I stayed on a given chapter, trying to get faster every time, and by the end of the book my reading skills had greatly improved. For context I'm now using the Shin Kanzen JLPT N3 books, and the reading one I found to be pretty easier than the grammar and listening, so I think tobira helped quite a bit with that, since a lot of the texts are native (albeit a bit simplified obviously) texts, about specific subjects. In any case, I suggest you look up the pdf's for both and see which you like best, that's your best bet in most cases, and then buy that one.

@@LeoSkyro I'll try my best to compare these two for you when I make this video next week! I just started into it today so it'll be a bit before I feel like I have a good grasp on the two

@@ThatsMyChad I'd be really interested to hear if there are any topics not covered in Intermediate Approach that are covered by Tobira and vice versa. And then how useful each might be with a Genki II level understanding of the language. I have heard Tobira can be kind of hard to get into if you don't have some decent reading practice with native material like NHK Easy News. With where I'm at now (just wrapped up Chapter 10 of Genki I today), NHK Easy News is still pretty solidly above my level and quite hard for me to read. High enough above my current level that I'm not sure NHK Easy News is a good use of my time yet before getting some more Genki study in under my belt. I'm not so worried about kanji once I get to the Tobira level as I'm 1600 into RTK1 and should have that book completed with a couple of months, but my vocab is still way short of getting much out of NHK Easy which people say is needed to get ready to tackle Tobira after Genki II. Currently reading よつばと! and I know it's a kid's manga, but it's a pretty good challenge for me in dialogue heavy pages. But wondering if it might make sense to use both Integrated Approach and Tobira at different times.
@homerthompson416
@homerthompson416 4 года назад
@@LeoSkyro Thanks Leo. I have heard from others also that Tobira is challenging to read at first and that one should read NHK Easy articles in preparation. But at my current level (just finished Ch 10 of Genki I) NHK Easy is way above my level to the point I'm not sure it's a profitable use of my time. Reading is my main goal though so maybe Tobira should be what I'm aiming for. よつばと! is already a heck of a challenge for me to read! But it's funny so not too hard to stay motivated.
