If Japan owns the 7"11 stores in America I wish they would put some Japanese sandwiches here. I would love to try the egg sandwich and the chicken. Maybe one day.

They may - it takes time to turn around a behemoth. Massive supply chain. I figure they’d need to change the way Americans see convenient stores. Heck, I’d like to see the US stop using paper checks 😂 I felt liberated when I came to Japan in 1998 and didn’t have to deal with that system.

@@onlyinjapanGO Japan needs online banking in multiple languages. I hate that I had to go to an ATM to deposit money though bank transfer for a bill before it closed at 5pm. Yes you read that right, the ATM closed at 5pm. Also haven't used a check in a decade. Everything is done by debit card and online.

Hello from Toronto. I have visited Japan about a dozen times and you can always rely on 7-11’s offerings being fresh. A favourite of mine is their ham, cheese and lettuce sandwiches. Interestingly, if a sandwich is past due (usually the next day), it won’t scan at the checkout. Lots of hot choices are available too. The stores are usually packed with “salary workers” on their breaks and I believe the stores get at least a couple of deliveries each day. That’s why things are fresh.

I can't speak for the rest of the U.S. but on Long Island, I never seen those sandwiches. Here, we have these turkey sandwiches with this spicy mayo dressing. It's delicious! It's a bit pricey too but it's really fresh! I can eat like 7 of them. Yum! :)

I really miss the super convenience of 7/11, Lawson's and Family Mart. I lived in Sasebo for 4 years and enjoyed it very much. My favorite sandwich to get was tuna salad sandwich and ham & cheese with lettuce sandwich. It's always fresh made daily everyday. I also liked getting their corn dogs as well. I wish I could go back soon.

Thank you for my fireworks postcard! I got it last week. Man, watching this just makes me miss Japan even more. We were supposed to back in April and had to cancel. The egg salad and ebi katsu sando are my favorites! I think one reason Japanese sandwiches are so good is despite the bread being white, and not taking away from the fillings, the bread is just so fluffy and light. And I just love when they trim off the crust. American sandwiches are good too, but like everything American sometimes it's just too much, not delicate. Cannot wait to go back soon!

I am Japanese and have been living in Australia for 20 years. I actually don’t really agree that Japanese sandwich is the best. I live in Melbourne and we can get pretty good sandwich in Melbourne. The difference, there are so many varieties of sandwich available in Japan, however the convenience store sandwich has preservative in it and it actually stated in ingredients list and it’s made in factory by machines. On the other hand, if you go to nice cafes in Melbourne, they make it fresh for you and most of bread doesn’t have preservative in it (I know this because I work as a chef) and they add more quantity of ingredients. If you buy ham sandwich in Japan, there are couple of slices of ham but in Melbourne, you get a lot more. What’s interesting is when I am in japan, I miss Aussie sandwich and when I am in Australia, I miss japan sandwich.

When I was in Yokohama for work I would stop at the 7-11 in the hotel complex on my way back to my hotel room each day. I'd grab some sandwiches and a bento type dinner meal. The quality and freshness of the items is much better in Japan. I was told they replenish their stock often, sometimes as much as 3 times in a single day.

I hope Japan can overhaul the way Americans run convenient stores with their take over of 7/11. I think QT is the closest we have to a good experience, and their food is cheap (and frozen and processed, of course) but at least it's tended to and fresh when you buy it. Our stores cannot hold a candle to this!

Oh, man - the Teriyaki Chicken & Egg sandwich is my jam. I've had it at least one each time I've been in Japan and it's so satisfying. The 7-Eleven sandwiches here in the Las Vegas area can be okay, if a bit pricey. Dry, too, since they don't usually have a lot of sauces or other things on them. I tend to avoid them these days, just due to the massive amount of sodium they have. The thing I'd like to see is some slightly healthier options for 7-Eleven. They are definitely stepping their game up, though, with private label items. So, they're learning from what 7-Eleven in Japan does best. And newer 7-Elevens have coffee machines that grind beans and make a fresh cup for you. Really cheap and surprisingly very good!

7-Eleven first appeared in my hometown in the 60s and was the first convenience store there. The very first 7-Eleven opened in 1927 in Dallas, Texas. Little corner ma and pop grocery stores existed before supermarkets, but it was the extended hours that made them revolutionary in America.

The reason that the sandwiches are not filled all the way to the back is to avoid getting your hands dirty because when you bite into it, you squeeze the filling out to the back. If it was loaded all the way, you’ll squeeze the filling on your fingers when you bite into it.

I'm surprised that you say American bread is crunchy. One of the reasons I'm not a great fan of subway is the soft, mushy bread. Give me a crunchy baguette any day! My brother and I made the mistake of asking for a ham and salad sandwich in NYC and got chunks of ham in mayonnaise between two slices of bread. We were expecting thin slices of ham with salad - as in lettuce, tomato etc. Japanese conbini sandwiches are OK but I generally buy onigiri for something quick, or zaru soba for a light lunch. In Australia, sandwiches are usually smaller like in Japan. I think it's only the USA that makes such huge sandwiches.
@TorToroPorco
@TorToroPorco 3 года назад
Japanese sandwiches are definitely slanted towards the pillowy bread texture which complements the generally soft textures of the fillings. They seem to follow in the British tradition of tea sandwiches which have their crust cut off as well but the British fillings tend to be rather bland. Western sandwiches have far more texture especially when you include crisp lettuce and crispy bacon. North American sandwiches are usually much larger as well and definitely not as dainty. The bread component is definitely missing from Japanese sandwiches. There can't be anything better than a crunchy fresh French baguette with some delicious ham and cheese or some other charcuterie. And certainly nothing as complex as rye bread. I mean is there anything more heavenly than a New York pastrami on rye with some decent French mustard?
@onlyinjapanGO
@onlyinjapanGO 3 года назад
They had rye bread a few times over the years but as a seasonal trend to get people to try it. Japanese consumers like variety and trying something new once :) but it’s rare that one stays around for a long time. Innovate or decline.

it is all about the mayo there, now you can buy Japanese mayo in USA at Walmart, but this is the difference between the 2, Japanese, is a little different than American mayo, because it's made with only egg yolks-not whole eggs-and with rice or apple vinegar and no added salt or sugar. It's bottled in a slim red-and-clear container, with an emblematic baby for its logo, BAM we CAN have them here now YES YES YES lol
