Some Japanese students can't tell the difference between "tennis" and pp. They think those words sound the same.
THIS IS BASED ON A REAL STORY.

Bruh, there are literally separate sounds for "te" and "pi" in Japanese Like, y'know, テニス (tenisu) and ピーニス (piinisu)
@sorathetroll
@sorathetroll 3 года назад
I'm going to pin this and explain it briefly. Japanese people truly believe they are supposed to say "peh-knee-sue" when they say the word, instead of like "pee-ne-s". Basically, just say "TENNIS" but replace the "T" with a "P" and that's exactly how Japanese people think they are supposed to say the word. When I was an English teacher, every time I said "tennis" my students would look around and go like "did he just say.........that???"

This is not the first time I've been told about this. As a person from the US, we're taught this verbal exchange almost from infancy. So, technically, it's merely extremely accurate. What not everyone knows, is that when we have an exchange with someone whose first language is not English, we often find their speech to be devastatingly charming. This creates a dilemma. You'd never want to accidentally have someone think you're laughing at them, or to discourage their impressive learning.

I lived and worked in Japan for almost 8 years and from college to a Japanese company, it was always that same phrase. So I’ve had this thought of two Japanese people speaking English to each other and they only know “I’m fine thanks, and you?” And they’re both so polite that they just get caught in this loop until the end of time of “I’m fine thanks, and you?” “I’m fine thanks, and you?” I miss Japan.

I love the stuck in a loop behavior too. It's sometimes like they try to outdo each other with showing respect and politeness. Like when bowing repeatedly while backing away. It's almost a sport of who can sneak in the last sign of respect before exiting. It's like getting the last word in an argument, and running away.

I think, in languages with direct borrowing from Latin, penis is pronounced similarly to tennis, which can be the subject of jokes. In Russian we also say something like "big tennis" to distinguish tennis from table tennis, which fuels the jokes more. Also Grand Slam (Большой шлем) has been misread as "Grand Cock" (Большой член), making it all that much more hilarious.

Yes, sometimes Japanese way of thinking can reverse connect English words with their Japanese pronunciation in the back of the mind.... one of my friends who is second-generation Japanese, yet he spent his growing-up years in Japan this has happened to him. what's even more odd, is that because him and I think so similarly sometimes, he starts speaking to me in Japanese because we're thinking and a Japanese way of thinking most of the time....it's interesting how way of thinking can be different even though you're speaking the same language.. it's similar to those shirts that are written in English, but the letters look like katakana on purpose. however, in the US, many people think this is taboo to claim that people have different ways of thinking even though there's ethnicity difference. However, I just don't think that it's correct to ignore the truth. it's something that I learned, being raised by American parents, yet I am half Japanese. Sometimes, even with genetics there can be a different way of thinking.my adoptive parents used to get upset with me, because I would never react the same way as my American cousins.
