thanks for honest review on the KTC versions of Roto ratchet ... i have the Wera version, it's handy for certain jobs but it would never be an every day ratchet
If a ratchet has 2 (or 4) pawls you can double the engagements per revolution by shortening/grinding down one (or two) of the pawl(s) fractionally. It means the shorter pawl falls into the slot before the full length pawl. I wouldn't advise modding any tools this way, if you do assume you'll halve your torque rating and you'll definitely void your warranty, but I've heard some over engineered mountain bike free-hubs can be modified this way.
Love your content Chris! What would you recommend between Ko-ken vs KTC 1/4 in ratchet & sockets (or even flex-head)? I'm building a smaller tool kit, already have Nepros 3/8 & 1/2 inch ratches for motorbike use. Thanks!
I feel the same on the roto-head ratchet because when switching direction, my hand and fingers are always oily. BTW, any idea on where I can find SK11 ratcheting wrenches, specifically mfr-10wl? Tried Amazon Japan and they seem to be out or discontinued. Any help would be appreciated because I know you have great knowledge of Japanese tools.
I just looked on Amazon.jp and 10mm is currently in stock: www.amazon.co.jp/SK11-%E3%82%A8%E3%82%B9%E3%82%B1%E3%83%BC11-MFR-17WL-%E3%83%95%E3%83%AC%E3%83%83%E3%82%AF%E3%82%B9%E3%83%A1%E3%82%AC%E3%83%8D%E3%83%A9%E3%83%81%E3%82%A7%E3%83%83%E3%83%88%E3%83%AC%E3%83%B3%E3%83%81-17mm/dp/B007TH5Q6U?th=1&psc=1 If you can't find it, you can also try searching with these key words included: "Gear Tech" Gear Tech is like a trademark or the manufacturers name in Taiwan. ...although that particular style of wrench seems like its exclusive to the Japanese domestic market. Worth a try though.
It looks great, but for the price, probably a do not buy. Thanks for the honest review. I dont own any rotor head ratchets myself and I do like ratchets with an elastomer (or other) type handle.
I didn’t hear it mentioned in the video, but how is the back drag on the KTC? Is it close to Nepros or Koken, or is it like snap on being a bit tighter to ratchet?
Like you I still find it hard to believe that KTC actually manufactures the actual head and ratcheting mechanism. Seems to strange they would copy the 72T pattern so many of the others contain. Also these ratchets make the most sense in 1/4 drive to me. I'm surprised you didn't go for the Koken 3776N instead of the KTC model, I own that one and really enjoy it. Now if both companies would release them in 1/4 drive I would be happy.
Hi Mark. FWIW, KTC/Nepros has round-head ratchets with 72-tooth mechanisms from at least 2008/9. My source told me the machining performed on these swivel head models is unlike other swivel heads from Taiwan. I didn't want to make the video any longer by showing the level of quality you get with the KTC, in comparison to the run of the mill version from Taiwan. Im not saying that that makes the KTC better, considering that the two are sold at different price points. Yeah, I've considered the Ko-ken swivel head many times in the past, but I'm a bit of a sucker for compact tools 😅
Any chance you could perhaps do a video on how you installed those plastic handles from Stanley and Williams? Did you have to mill them out to fit over the metal handles? I assume you must have filled them with epoxy to fill the voids and for adhesion?
I did all of my custom handled ratchets/hinge handles a dozen years ago and I didn't take any photos/video of the process. I don't have a lathe, but I do have an angle grinder, haha. I ground it down to a square and drilled the handles slightly undersized. Before installing the handle, I warmed up the steel a bit and pounded the handle on with a hammer. For the Stanley roto head one (first one I ever did) I did put epoxy in the handle, but the Williams and other I've done, it was just friction fit.
Ya, I'm the opposite. I love roto heads, I been looking for a real good one. I can not afford to get the snap on. But I prefer roto heads over regular flex heads.
that handle looks eerily similar to my proto flex ratchet J5249HTCF. One of my TONE ratchet handles is exactly the same as my Taiwanese-made blackhawk ratchet. But is there any connection between stanley-proto-mac and KTC?
Nope, no connection. The handle shape on the KTC is in line with most of the KTC ratchets/hinge handles. That series of TONE and the Blackhawk ratchets are produced by the same manufacturer in Taiwan.
hello, what is the dye or coloring you are using to highlight letters on certain tools? i saw the yellow on your ko-ken in this video and i have seen you do that to a number of other tools, what are you using for that?
Hi there. I've just been using Markal's (i believe oil based) pens to fill the letters/numbers. Make sure the felt tip is well saturated with ink when applying it. Make sure to fill it with ink (more the better in my experience). Let it sit for 30-60 secs before lightly wiping it off. Wiping the excess off.
Those wrenches are likely fully manufactured and assembled in Taiwan or manufactured in Taiwan but assembled in Japan. Tone is a good brand that buys a lot from the best OEM/ODM's in Taiwan. So, not everything they sell is made in Japan.
New drinking game everytime you hear "uuuhhh, uh' or some version of that take a shot. WARNING IF YOUR A LIGHT WEIGHT ONLY PLAY FOR 1 MINUTE. if your an alcoholic 2minutes and if your suicidal watch the whole vid
Dude, you need to take a class on speech and presentation. This video is impossible to watch, you quite literally say “uhhh” or “uhm” every other word. So distracting.
