Vending machines are one of the first things visitors see when they arrive in Japan. Colorful, convenient and almost anything that can be sold in one.
In this episode, we look at a wide variety of machines. From fully digital drink machines to the unusual vending machine like canned hot ramen and bread-in-a-can in Akihabara, we tour Japan to check them all out. The why and how of vending machines.
More Japanese Vending Machines from ONLY in JAPAN:
★ Vending Machine Restaurant: • Japanese Vending Machi...
★ Vending Machine House of Horrors: • Japanese Vending Machi...
★ Sake Vending Machine: • Japanese Sake Vending ...
★ Tokyo’s Vending Machine Corner Adventure
• Alcohol Vending Machin...
Notes: The exchange rate is always changing. In general, it's US$1 = 100~120 yen
So, the banana is about US$1.10
The vending machine lunch was about US$10.00

I like that in Japan everything seems to be of much convenience. They're instant meals, drinks, and snacks for busy life yet the culture of making healthy home cooked meals is still there. While instant food in other countries seems to look as unhealthy as it really is...almost always sloppy. It doesn't seem that way in Japan.

That instant food from those machines is processed garbage. Hot dogs, ramen noodles, rice balls and mystery meat. C'mon now!

When I was in Japan as a transfer student, one of the biggest things that stood out for me when walking the streets of Kyoto is how common these machines were. Virtually every street corner had a duo or trio of vending machines selling 100 - 300 yen tea or coffee shots.

No kidding. I was in Kyoto a few months back and you couldn't walk very far without running into a vending machine. After vending machines, the next most common thing were convenience stores, it seemed like that in both Tokyo and Kyoto there were convenience stores every block or 2. My family and I were lucky in that the hotels we stayed in both Kyoto and Tokyo were close to lots of vending machines as well conveniences stores.

I have seen canned bread/cake as far back as the early early 80's. It was in a standard Campbell's soup sized can with a pull top. It popped right out with waxed paper around the body. 2 Varieties: Fruit cake, and chocolate with chocolate chips. Even us kids would not eat it. Dense, Greasy, and Disgusting, LOL!

I think it would be great if we could have more different kinds. Our soda machines offer only a handful of sodas (not to mention that every medical facility in the tristate area seems to have made an exclusive deal with Pepsi and therefore only Pepsi products can be purchased no matter how many floors of the hospital you visit) and most vending machines offer the exact same array of snacks with a few variations. I did recently see an ice cream vending machine and I just had to use it because it was so cool :) At my husband's office they have one that has things the employees could eat for lunch if necessary, but I would love to see a change to that one because it is full of the sorts of things that make McDonalds sound healthy. I love the idea of being able to get rice balls and other healthy but delicious foods from a machine. It could really change America if we could have healthy vending machines!

Hey John I knew that this video was out there and that it’s a little older but our local news in Cincinnati Ohio (not to be punny but yeah I know what Ohio means in Japanese) had something on and I copied this videos web link into my Twitter account and sent it to them because the story was about the new coffee Coca-Cola in a can which I know Japan has had for a while now. Our AM newsman seemed to like your informative video! Maybe it will get you a few more American subscribers! Thanks John, love those vids!

+Jasmin Villegas It's US$1 = 120 JPY right now. Sorry about that but the exchange rate has changed a lot since I made this. It's better not to list prices in USD since it swings between US$1 = 80 JPY to 130 JPY * When I came to Japan in 1998, it was US$1 = 145 JPY!! In 2012 it was US$1 = 78 so ... Hope that helps. -John

As of now you could just move the decimal 2 spaces to get a rough estimate of the price. So something that is 200 yen would roughly cost $2 in USD. Another example is an item that costs 2350 yen which would be VERY ROUGHLY $23.50 in USD. Higher the number the less close you'll actually be to the correct USD amount. Or if you can quickly do the math 2350 yen would be 2350 divided by 100 and then times 9

From a vending machine? You do realise a banana vending machine is quite a special thing. It can't be used for selling bananas per kg, like any grocery store would. The expenses of running a vending machine selling fresh fruits as delicate as bananas would be much higher than in a grocery store.
