In this video, I'll install 30 mm thick floor boards of Japanese cypress with knags. It was a very hot day after a long rainy season in Japan, so I was really sweaty. Flooring takes time a lot, but I like this work because of sense of accomplishment.

I was a floor installer for 5 yrs. The first year I was a big headed worker and told my boss that I dont need to wear knee pads. A few months later I was at the hospital having fluid drained from my knees. Ever since then I'll wear knee pads when working on my knees.

I really like how Japanese carpenters name their processes, this makes them easier to remember and think about for the next time they come up.

I did my first wooden floor some 20 years ago. I had just wooden mallet, bag of nails, hammer, kataba-saw and set of chisels. That floor laughs at me every day. :-D Maybe my next floor is better. This video how master Shoyan builds up a floor makes me feel humble. Simple but taken into perfection.

Thanks again for another great video!! Please also translate the one where you explain the differences in saws (posted on June 8). It would be interesting to hear why you are changing maybe to a kataba when before you were sawing with a ryoba.

Use screws with tread all the way to the head. If you dont, the floor can some times start to squeak when it dries out.

Japanese cypress is a beautiful wood the contrast between the colours of the log and floor really standout. A couple of questions. 1 why don’t you wear knee pads. 2 And not a slipper type shoes as the wood cuttings stick to socks. All the best for 2023 🎉🎉

Nice video and excellent craftsmanship. One question though won't there be a lot of resonance sound when making the floor like that?

in Japan any time indoors you must not wear shoes. Plus keeps the nice finish of the wood clean.

Is it common practice to work with only socks on in this trade? Or is it personal choice for comfort?
