In this video, I'll make the timber joint called "okkakedaisen-tsugi" This time, I'll use the maximum size of timber for this joint. It takes a lot of efforts to make this joint. I feel fun when I drive in dowels into this joint.

It is a rare privilege and luxury that a top Japanese master carpenter publicly shares this treasure of wisdom and artwork from his long-time experience. Shoyan, domo arigato gozaimashita!

European timber framing has some incredibly strong joints......but Japanese timber framing is just as strong while still being a touch more elegant looking. So fascinating to watch a master craftsman at work. In the old days, only an apprentice could ever see this type of work up close. Thank you Shoyan.

Very cool to see the combined use of modern tools with "normal" tools!

Wow. The blend of modern and traditional tool use here is phenomenal. All carpenters have a deadline and need speed and efficiency but you don't have to abandon excellent craftsmanship to get there. You just have to know when and where to use tools for precision and tools for speed and areas where precision isn't essential and efficiency is. Your mastery in all of those aspects and understanding is astonishing. Thank you.

I love how this series has changed my preconception of Japanese carpenters. The picture your usually get on RU-vid is someone who works only with traditional tools, and only builds tables and temples. Not somebody who uses a smart mix of power tools and hand tools. Thank you.

I give up. To gather all the tools needed alone I will have to fly to Japan and raid several carpenters..... But even if I had those tools I'll never know how to gather the knowledge and experience this skilled master has in my entire life. Astonishing.

don't be ridiculous There is nothing particularly difficult about what he's doing It's just a half lap joint with 2 lips so that it stays straight. I've reinvented some japanese joints many times without knowing it, because every joint is basically removing half of the wood on piece A and half of wood on piece B on the intersection volume.
@hughfryer3813

The skill with which you cut the joint clearly showed when you joined the two timbers. Very well done. It has been a pleasure to watch you.

I think traditional Japanese woodworking is marvelous, however it's obvious you use some power tools so why not a plunge router for most of the clearing?
