Imagine you're a Japanese man who dreamed of becoming an actor, and your only role was in an original Xbox commercial.

It's interesting that XBOX never caught on in Japan, but Japan's consoles have always been popular in the west. The controllers for example- Japanese consoles' first party controllers, especially the DS family and the Nintendo Switch Joy Con, are commonly cited by western players to be tiny and cramped and have way too small buttons, because the hands of those of Asian descent are generally smaller than the hands of those of European or African descent. So I imagine the inverse was true, western gamers largely HATED the XBOX's "Duke" original controller because of it's massive size, so I'm sure this was criticized even more heavily in Japan. But whereas western players adapted to the smaller form factor of Japanese controllers, this didn't really happen in Japan with an American controller. Obviously this applies to more than just controllers, but I do wonder WHY Japanese audiences have historically been so resilient to the console, when the opposite effect happened with the inverse situation.

It’s interesting to see these commercials that are meant for Japan knowing that the original Xbox didn’t do very well in that country but they did seem to pull all the stops out to make it super exciting lol Also seeing Shin Megami Tensei NINE makes me laugh because we never saw it in the west and since it was supposed to be an MMO that got cut down to a single player experience it’s execution was not very good lol

The advertising didnt seem out of place compared to what nintendo and PlayStation had for their games over there. If microsoft actually worked on learning the cultural differences it probably would've sold better than it did.

Back when Xbox had exclusives. Don't get me wrong, as much as I don't like Don Mattrick for his Xbox One launch. At least, Xbox still had exclusives before Phil Spencer became a CEO.
