I understand why jasmine turned it down. Sometimes there’s a such thing as your character being TOO popular because when you play someone that iconic for a few years, that character eclipse’s you and everyone thinks that’s as good as you can get which is why many actors who became successful during the run don’t become successful afterward unfortunately.
@@betterthanemril988 True. She has said that she struggled with fans being so hooked on Whitley so in that respect, the spin-off would not have made sense for her.
I didn't think Lisa Binet's character had bite. Jasmine Guy did have bite as Whitley. I know Jasmine said she wasn't feeling the Dwayne-Whitley relationship. But I enjoyed their journey, as well as the others such as Kim, Freddie and Ron. I prefer Different World over The Cosby Show.
Oh yes, she seems tough in this interview. And I remember thinking the same thing when I saw her on an Arsenio interview in the 80's. I knew she was NOTHING like Whitley when I saw that. I remember interviews where Tisha Campbell said she had her back during "School Daze" ; when the other females were questioning having the lead role. I like this because you get to see how good of an actress she is because she was so believable as "Whitley".
The wedding was not the last episode, it was the finale for Season 5. The last episode was Whitley and Dwayne moving to Japan for him to build a new computer game. Season 6 did get into the things she spoke about which had them going through typical newlywed problems of money, working together, and more. We also saw more storylines around the new kids and a backdoor pilot of the new kids branching off from A Different World.
I think it wouldve worked too if not for the ball player. That character made no sense. You never saw him in practice, never saw him before/during/after games. Maybe he was redshirting but none of that was really revealed in the show.
Like Carroll O'Connor as Archie Bunker, Jean Stapleton as Edith Bunker, Sherman Hemsley as George Jefferson, Ed O'Neill as Al Bundy, Jaleel White as Steve Urkel and Christina Applegate as Kelly Bundy; Jasmine Guy was so masterful in the role of Whitley, so believable and convincing that everybody thought at the time and still thinks she actually really is that character. She was born for the role and was foolishly denied multiple Emmys for it.
I just recently watched all of the shows on prime video. For me I watched it differently than when I watched it back in the day. When I watched it back in the 90s , I did not care for Whitley. Watching it as a grown women , I love Whitley’s character. At times she was just so blunt. I guess now I see alittle bit of myself in this character. Spoiled, then learning to become so independent. Then finding a man who truly loves me faults and all. Some of the shows I laugh at, thinking, I would have said that , or handled that situation exactly Iike W
I liked ADW so much! My era! I loved Whitley (Jasmine) so much! She was so beautiful (still is) and I loved her relationship with Dewayne. I wanted that for them. I saw chemistry. Such a great show. They are all sooo totally different from their characters as should be...great actors!
I love Jasmine Guy she was the star of the show and by the 6 season she was similar to Lucille Ball in the way of carrying the show and her comedy the thing was about season 6 the show fell apart Jada was gone mostly during season 6 the kids wasn't funny or interesting without Jada. the adults accept for Freddy and Whitley felt flat the show needed a new energy of college students and a tragedy so most of the old cast could exit
I wouldn’t say she carried the show but she was fantastic. I def think she was the best character on the show but Kadeem and Debbie played just as much of a role of the show’s success. That chemistry Kadeem and Jasmine’s characters had was unreal
I’m like, WTH are they talking about?! There was a whole ‘nother season. Though not the best..but STILL another season that kind of gave the newer generation their shot. Showed married life with Whitley and Dwayne and sad busted friendships.
I like how she talked about the future of the characters lives towards the end of the show and how she felt during that time, starting at 5:19 I think.
I loved that part too as I love it when actors/actresses share their views of how they think the characters would react to many things. Debbie Allen really did an exceptional job of taking A Different World to a new level as Season 1 was like Saved By The Bell on a college
I think bottom line is.... Jasmine Guy was looking for older and mature ( because she keeps referring to older sister and younger brother) Kadeem Hardison had the hots for Jasmine since School Daze. But she was so much "older". She only wanted a man. He may have loved a cared for others. But I think he really wanted to see Jasmine. Come on. Even his Ex Wife Chante Moore favors the women. Maybe I'm wrong, but it is what I feel. There was always tension on set. And she crushed on Byron's character in real life. So he probably wanted to to claim the territory. And with Julian... She dated him. So he had to deal. If Jasmine was attracted to him.... She hid it because to me she wanted older but if they would have went there as Jasmine and Kadeem and not just Dwayne and Whitley..... The chemistry, SEX, LOVE .... ETC. Would have been off the chain. Sometimes on screen chemistry equals real life chemistry.... I know. I'm an actor. And you can only vibe unless it is something obviously there from jump without the cameras, script and directors.
Agreed 100%. Jasmine was a big crush for him. As you said, he married Chante Moore and Kadeem admitted back then that his ideal woman was a Salma Hayek/Lucy Lui combo. The fact that Kadeem was pissed at Jas love scenes with Joe Morton in ADW, proves that he still had residual feelings for her. I mean why else would he care?? Jas was only 3 years older than him, but yeah she wanted an Alpha. A tough powerful guy and Kadeem was probably too immature for her.His crush started on School Daze and probably lasted all through ADW.😉😉
I agree with Jasmine as how Whitley was portrayed in Season 1, she would have likely dated an older man someone who is an entry-level corporate guy. Whitely was that type and it was a true opposite attract with Dwayne. It reminded me of how Isabel Sanford didn't want to be 'married' to Sherman Hemsley when she was given a husband on All In The Family. She wanted someone tall, dark, and handsome. Even she had to admit, casting knew what they were doing as we became like the couple of the century as Sherman and I did many cameos together and people literally thought we were married.
But isn't this so real life with how most actual couples get together? Lol most of the time it's always the girl that doesn't want the guy and the guy has to step the game up to win the girl but they always end up happily married with four or five kids living in a big house with white picket fences etc lol.
Ok! The last episode wasn't the wedding episode. The last episode was Whitley and Dwayne going off into a different world, by moving to Tokyo because of Dwayne's video game idea. It seems as though the interviewer tried to ask a question about final episodes and tried to tie it in to the wedding episode. Even Jasmine Guy was speaking as if the show didn't really go into her marriage to Dwayne. What an actuality the season following the wedding episode was all about their marriage. I e, the unemployment, the robbery. Seems to me the question should have been asked about the final episode which was all about Whitley and Dwayne moving to Tokyo, and Whitley being pregnant. They just skipped all over that
TOOK THE WORDS RIGHT OUT OF MY MOUTH! They forgot an entire season?! Maybe bc the final season was so different from the seasons prior? But the wedding def wasn’t the last episode?!
I was thinking the very same things. Season 6 was like a new beginning. All of the core characters had graduated from Hillman college and began to start their adult lives. Whitley and Dwayne's marriage was the main plot for that entire season. I was a little confused when Jasmine was talking as if the wedding episode was the series finale.
I think having Lisa do the C. Show and a different world would’ve been great. Especially a different world because it would’ve given women who were dealing with the same situation new avenues to explore and how to deal with the situation
No I think it worked out for the best. I love Lisa but her on A Different World did not work at all which is why the first season was so bland and weak. It was too much a carbon copy of the mothership. Jasmine Guy was meant to be the lead and the character of Whitley, her relationship with Dwayne and Debbie Allen saved that show and kept it on for 5 years after the first season.
@@kendallrivers1119 but that wasn’t really Lisa bonets fault though. The show really wasn’t bad if you look at it on it’s own but in comparison to seasons 2-6 it’s corny and sitcom-ish yes. But everyone had potential that 1st year that was enhanced due to Debbie Allen’s takeover. Denise didn’t get to utilize hers so we don’t really know for sure how she would’ve been if she stayed.
@@betterthanemril988 oh I don't think it was bad but definitely paled in comparison. Also Lisa is very limited as an actress and Denise was very limited as a character unlike Jasmine as Whitley or Kadeem as Dwayne and the others so I couldn't imagine getting the amazing stories we ended up getting seasons 2-6. And we definitely never would've gotten Dwayne and Whitley which would've been tragic. It all worked out for the best.
"Obvious and yet not obvious" is what makes most... and certainly the best TV romances work. There's a slow button up while the fans are literally sitting on the edge of their seats for years waiting for what they know is coming to actually happen. Unfortunately when it finally does, the series dies off real quick.
Now I know we don't have a Mandela Effect going on here. The wedding was not the last episode and I am highly offended that it was said that the wedding was the last show. I have seen every episode multiple times. lol
I know. It was a huge mistake on my part. Mea Culpa! Please don't be offended - I messed up! (Only human.). Thanks for pointing out the mistake! Best, David
I've always felt they focused waaaay too much on Dwayne and Whitley getting married. It was a show about college life. Not a romantic comedy. Once the characters graduated college, send them off to ever after. Let us imagine.
@@kendallrivers1119 it's been a while since I've watched this, but a man can have interest in a woman and still be a man about it rather than some catty bitch. That's the difference between a MAN and a sucker. And yeah, I can have interest in a woman without being jealous. If she's not mine, she's not mine. I take it your female? It's definitely not your place to dictate what a man should be. You don't have to go through being one or understand the stipulations a man can have on him. Women can be catty. Men should be men.
We love and support Bill Cosby and don’t believe the propaganda about him or his legacy, Jasmine Guy is/was amazing as a singer, dancer, author and actress -
Bill was a revered artist but that doesn't mean he didn't have a dark side. A powerful, rich and beloved star doesn't get prosecuted and sentenced to prison without evidence. It's sad and hard to accept but face it, it's probably true.
