Breaking down football for swifties. Welcome to football. We're stoked to have you. 1) A FG is a kick through the upright goal posts, usually on fourth down (fourth try to get ten yards before the defense gets the ball back) and the farthest FG ever hit was done by Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker at 66 yards (from the opponents 48 yard line, goal posts are roughly 18 yards past the goal line). 2) Travis blocks and catches the ball. Hes basically a big hybrid Wide Receiver. If the Quarterback is handing the ball to the Runningback on a run play, Travis would block defenders trying to get to whoever has the ball on offense. The guy giving the ball to the QB on every snap (play/down/offensive snap) is the center (of the O Line, and that's the position Jason plays) 3. A down is one of four tries to get ten yards. Usually if the offense doesnt get ten yards in three tries they either attempt a field goal if theyre 5 yards from the LoS) when they stop the WR from having a fair shot at the catch (early tackle, not playing the ball), and offensive pass interference doesnt happen as often but its when the WR stops the DB from making a play on a bad throw/potential Interception before the ball gets there. b) Holding: Holding an opponents jersey to stop them from advancing towards the QB or through a block on the DL (usually happens on the OL) c) False Start: offensive line moves before the ball is snapped after everyone is set. Happens to the defense too but is usually called encroachment or neutral zone infraction if they cross the line of scrimmage. 4) On offense a player is down when a limb other than their hand, head, or foot touch the ground with the ball. Usually a leg, knee, shoulder, or elbow. If the ballcarrier falls down they can get up and run again unless the oposing team touches them down. Also, forgot to add that Defensive Pass Interference is a spot foul which is HUGE for the offense because if the QB hurls the ball 50 yards to his WR/TE/RB and DPI is called it's the same as a huge completion and the ball moves to wear the foul occured. It usually happens more than 10 yards down the field which usually leads to a new set of downs for the offense. Not necessarily fair considering OPI is a ten yard penalty but the new age of NFL rules favors the offense. Also, a caveat to the last thing I mentioned, if the ball carrier looks like he's down but doesn't hear a whistle and is on top of a defender that's on the ground the play is still live as long as his knee/elbow/shoulder/back doesn't touch the ground while he has possession of the ball. If you see players stop because they think the ball carrier is down but the whistle hasn't been blown the ball carrier can keep going for the TD. I'm a Seahawks fan that fell in love with the game of football after our SB run in 2005 where the refs stole the ring from us and gave it to Pittsburgh as a going away/retiring present for Jerome Bettis. Yes I'm still salty about it. My team went 13-3 and had the league MVP at RB and lost to a 9-7 Pittsburgh team that lost their way to a SB. #GoHawks My wife is a Swifty and I'm excited to be able to talk to her about football and see her get into it now too. Especially since it's not the f***in Kardashians or something like that. I say the NFL is my soaps and I'm not even exaggerating a little bit. Welcome to the game we know and love dearly, -Sven
You know what if this entire thing gets me into football, I won’t even be mad 💁🏻♀️ this show is actually pretty funny & you don’t even need to watch/like football to enjoy it. 🎉
A game is made up of a series of plays. Each play is called a 'down'. If you gain 10 yards within 4 downs, you get to continue. If not, you (usually) punt (kick) the ball to the other team.
Maybe it’s just me , however field goals and extra points seem more important than ever . Guess I’m old please excuse me . However , I hope you both do well today
No Dumb ?: Is football as stimulating to the senses for the players as it sounds on the documentary?🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 lifelong cowboys and sooners fan but love eagles too....especially since mike vick days and now a sooner alumni
Lol @ all the swifties up in the top of the comments I have a fiancée who’s a Swiftie who bragged to me that she knew what the quarterback on a team was on our first date. She thought that would be enough for us to go on a second one. We’re getting married in two months, so it couldn’t have been a turn off😂😁❤️
The line of scrimmage is the line the two teams line up on. The team with the ball has to take that ball 10 yards past that line and has 4 tries (downs) to do so. So if they start on the 20 they have to get to the 30. Lol did that make any sense?
A down is a singular offensive attempt to move the ball towards the goal. The offense gets 4 downs to either score or refresh their count of downs. Every 10 yards the amount of downs Available to the offense resets. Thus the offense must advance the ball 19 yards in 4 downs to retain possession. If after 4 downs the offense fails to acquire more downs or score the possession of the ball transfers to the other team. The offense may also attempt a field goal which is when the kickers kicks the ball through the up rights (big yellow posts) or punt the ball down field transferring possession to the other team in a defensively advantageous position. By punting however the team surrenders the 4th down to do this. That wasn’t that hard, feel free to use this. I also accept cash 😂
@@fatzotv I would of never knew what that meant if it wasn't for Pat McAfee singing 22 the other day. I'm just realizing Taylor sings a lot of the songs I hear at grocery stores and restaurants.
As a casual football fan and a big time Swiftie, I am kind of loving how interesting football suddenly has become and how many of my friends are suddenly up for watching a game 😁
I feel like the NFL has been loving this because all of a sudden, there's been a massive influx of fans that were never interested in Football and now watch it together on Sundays.
Though I am a Swiftie, I have tried to understand football before and no one would explain the details to me. My parents took me to Gator games a few times and wouldn't answer my questions. An old boyfriend would always watch Sunday football and wouldn't bother either. I am a hardcore gamer and knowing what I am watching is what makes me get into it there. The good part about this is you're helping new fans get to know the game & opening the door to becoming lifetime fans of football itself-regardless of anything to do with social circumstances. Thank you for this and I hope more people ask questions about how the game works to help the new fans!
That sucks bc football really is super fun once you know how it works! Don’t let them turn you off it! Ask away! Someone in here will explain whatever it is
If you're still in florida and you can happen to come to the Florida-Georgia game, I'd be more than happy to explain football to you. From simplicity to complexity, i got you👊🏾
Downs = attempts You get 4 attempts to get 10 yards. If you get the 10 yards, it becomes 1st down again and you have to try to get the next 10 yards (to progress the ball downfield to score points) 1st down = 1st attempt, 2nd down = 2nd attempt etc If it’s 4th down (final attempt) you can either punt the ball (to give the other team the ball but farther away) or you can try to get the remaining yards needed to make it to the 1st down (risk being, if you fail to get the first down on the 4th attempt- aka 4th down- the opposing team gets the ball where you had it last) These questions are hilarious! I grew up with football so I just assumed everyone knew what these terms meant. Glad I have a new perspective lol. Hope I explained this well enough 👍
ahahaha shoutout new NFL fans, I started watching the NFL and became an eagles diehard because of Jordan Mailata about a year ago. I understand most of everything now but the little things help
Same here. Over here in Europe and followed PL for so so many years. But this sport really had me feel stupid since I had no idea about all the terminology and rules. Now I will be able to tune in more.
I have been so emotional this weekend watching all the TikTok videos of dads showing their daughters watching football with them. It makes me miss my dad so much! He taught me the basics of football 39 years ago when the Bears won the SB in ‘85. (I can still sing along with The Super Bowl Shuffle!) To see these two worlds collide and dads not wasting an opportunity to connect with the Swifties in their lives is an unexpected delight to watch. I am enjoying the heck out of it!
Heyy, Brazilian swiftie here!! 🇧🇷 I came back to this video to thank you guys because last sunday(chiefs x jets) my boyfriend and I watched our first american football game and because of you guys we REALLY understood the rules!!! Thankssss
This crossover has honestly been so helpful. I tried getting into football when my city’s team went to the Super Bowl years back but somehow now that my special interest is involved, the rules are finally sticking. It’s like the difference between learning math with no real life context vs applying math to something interesting that I enjoy. 😂 Thank you both. Your podcast is really fun, I’ve been enjoying listening to it this week.
Thank you for explaining in such a kind and helpful way. Many women especially younger women get brushed off or laughed at by the men in their lives when they ask questions about sports or show interest in any sport as you can see from some of the comments below. While some might be here for a short time just from curiosity others will stay and become fans of both men and the sport they play. Women respond well to smart funny family men who are the best at what they do. It would be great to have a question and answer segment occasionally.
A down is a turn. You get 4 turns to go 10 yards. If you make it in your 4 turns, you get 4 more tries. If you don’t, it’s the other teams turn. If you don’t make it in 4 turns then the other teams gets to start where your turn ended and they don’t have to go the length of the field to score. If a team doesn’t want that to happen, then they can sacrifice their last turn to instead kick it as far as they can in the wrong direction so the other team has to go farther to score. This is called a “punt”
This new subscriber enjoyed the football Q&A session and watching you both struggle to explain simple football terms. 🤣🤣🤣 My dad taught me these terms when I was a cheerleader in the 5th-8th grades. Living in the suburbs of Cleveland, many years were spent watching the Browns lose. Have to say, tho, the Brian Sipe / Bernie Kosar years ("Cardiac Kids") are fun-remembered years screaming at the tv (aging myself). Today, only exciting superbowl and Pro Bowl games are fun for me (like the one you two brothers played in together). Congrats on your successful podcast and wish you both well. Watched the documentary "Kelce" and enjoyed it. The '23-'24 season the last for you Jason? And Jason, your wife is really cool. Travis, think it's great you wear 87 in honor of your brother.
You boys are gentlemen. I knew nothing about football. And I appreciate you handling it with care and respect. It makes me wanna cry kudos to you. I am now a fan of football in a fan of gentlemen of football! As well as a Swiftie. Peace and love thank you.
thank u so much for being nice and explaining to everyone. the “no dumb questions” is really reassuring not gonna lie. also for everyone who has these questions there’s a 10 min animated explanation video i watched that really helped understand this video. i definitely recommend watching that first if this video is already advanced lol😅
Because "nobody ever heard of Trav before Taylor (who I adore) put him on the map". 😂😂😂😂 We welcome new viewers, & maybe new NFL fans, who are helping make Travis' name FINALLY known! Bet MVPPAT is glad she is helping you help take some of publicity weight off his shoulders! 😂😂Welcome to #ChiefsKingdom lovely Swifties! ❤️💛❤️💛❤️
You guys handled that pretty well. Knowing all these new listeners are trying to learn football, it'll take time. You can't learn football overnight. The best thing for them to do is watch football with someone that knows the game. After a while they'll get the hang of it.
Off topic, Fox host loosing there minds over Taylor swift.. She is such a great Tennessean and a human being just comes too show how hateful fox new is.. I hope Taylor and 87 have a great future with each other…🙏🍀😀
I love hearing all kinds of questions about the game and not just personal questions. The media has already went way too far with Travis and Taylor. They are two adults that met and are hanging out when they’re able to do so. Let them get to know each other before you all are putting a freaking label on them.
Man some of these comments are just plain RUDE. It looks like most of the fun and inclusive comments are from Swifties. That's a shame. Can we just take a step back, enjoy football, appreciate new fans and let these adults live their lives? Respect all around.
Im still trying to figure out how to describe it consistently. I feel like I come up with a different explanation whenever introducing football to others
OMG I just love your podcasts eyebrows 🤩 jk Jason. I swear 😊 I learned football 🏈 from my brothers and my dad You definitely explain things well to people who don't know football 🏈
I watched this for the first time as a Swiftie not knowing what all the responses mean but now weeks later after familiarising myself with all these rules im amazed at how Jason and Travis can answer some of these questions without giggling at our ignorance 😭😭😭😭
The term 'down' come from the official placing the ball down on the ground from where the offense take control of it. The referee doesn't put the ball in the hands of the offense, they place it 'down' on the ground.
so you kick the ball during the field goal - is that the reason why its called FOOTball? just a no dumb question from a guy from europe, where football is played with our feet (you all it soccer) 😜
Okay Einsteins for a Soccer fan like me who knows nothing of American Football and prefers thighs on Rugby players because candy eye kfc, may I recommend prestigious gentlemen you have these term of sport art as randomnees ( a clickable pop up explaining the art or practice linked to a video illustration) because telling me you throw a football through your legs takes me to very interesting scenarios mentally unfit for public consumption 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏼♀️😂😂😂😂
When i heard on the Toy Story breakdown of the field goal, and they broke down the dimensions, and they said the posts were 18.5" (yes inches) apart I couldn't even stand to watch anymore of it. But I agree, the simpler the question, the harder to answer.
"Tight end" and "split end" are the two relative positions of the last person on a line of 7 offensive people that are required to be on thenline of scrimmage. The tight end is in tight to the other linemen, while the split end is split further away.
@JasonKelce You did soooo great on the downs explanation, but tight end?? The Chippendales Position???? @TravisKelce I will forever picture you diffently when you line up! Be still my 67 yr old grandma of 5 heart! 😂😂😂😂
The best way to explain a down to a new fan is just say a down as a try so you get four tries which are downs to go 10 yards to get four more tries to go 10 more yards As a football fan who’s had to explain this to multiple women
A “down” refers to an attempt to advance the ball “ down” the field toward the goal. You get four attempts to advance 10 yards. Once accomplished repeat.
