Jason Blum is the founder and CEO of Blumhouse Productions, a multi-media production company that has pioneered a new model of studio filmmaking- producing high-quality micro-budget films for wide release. Since its launch in 2000, Blumhouse has produced more than 30 feature films including the highly-profitable Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Purge and Sinister franchises. Eight of Blumhouse's recent films have grossed a combined $1 billion at the worldwide box-office on budgets under $50 million.
Blumhouse's recent films include The Purge, under its first-look deal with Universal Pictures, which opened to more than $34 million with a budget of just $3 million and Insidious: Chapter Two which opened to over $40 million with just a $5m budget.

7:09 He doesn't work with first or second time directors? Joel Edgerton on The Gift, Jordan Peele on Get out, Stiles White on Ouija, Patrick Brice on Creep, Gregory Plotkin on Paranormal Acitvity: The Ghost Dimension, Damien Chazelle on Whiplash.

Your comment was 3 years ago. This interview was 6 years ago. In the interview he says his method allows him to have the ability to try new things, although it’s not a stepping stone, it’s the main thing

Edgerton made many many many movies prior, you just don't know them.

Very nice, but I was under the impression that according to SAG, under 50,000 is what's considered Ultra Low Budget/Micro Budget, not 3 -5 Million which I consider Low Budget but not Micro/Ultra Low. Not that it really matters I guess.

Is he related to Steve Blum? Because he kind of sounds like him

His statement about Rebate states isn't entirely true. Unfriended was a 1 million dollar production, in Louisiana you get your rebate if you spend at least $300.000 and that's why The Town that Dreaded Sundown was filmed here. Just saying.

He said that’s the case for 80% of the movies. In the end when an audience member called him out for a movie he made in a rebate state he mentioned 80% of his movies are made in la and that the one that wasn’t had a contract with a big studio. Perhaps a big studio was involved the negotiations?

I don't really get what the innovation of this model is. In L.A., he produces "low-budget" films that give the directors final cut and then what? He has an "in" with the studios and maybe they pick it up for distribution? But not every film gets a wide release and he can't even promise that and more than likely, ends up on iTunes. Couldn't a filmmaker make a good low-budget film, then have it get picked up for distribution without him? I don't really get what a filmmaker gets out of the partnership. The bottom line is if your movie is good, it will create buzz and get seen with or without their production company.

#1 what makes blumhouse so appealing is the success they have had so sure he can't promise your film will make theatres...but..when they do, they do great, so thats what filmmakers see when they see the name blumhouse, i will be pitching an idea of mine to them in the coming months and hopefully you will see a picture by me soon!

Maybe watch the end when somebody asked if first time directors should seek him out? He said no and that they should make a movie on a low budget without him. He’s specifically seeking out directors who made something big, and later had trouble when they lost creative control
