Really great review! I'll add that I think the S and Es are also a reference to Jason's independent record label, also called Southeastern Records. The word in general is an important part of his career and brand.
Excellent review, really appreciate the time you took there. Like your analysis of the album artwork too. I need to listen to Weathervanes more, but can say the final third of it blew me away. Btw I had no idea that Jason Isbell was also an actor, so when i sat down in the cinema to watch Killers of the Flower Moon and saw Isbell in one of the main roles i was like "What the hell?" A cool surprise! Stuart
Thanks for the kind words, Stuart. Weathervanes is destined to be a classic as I think a lot of Isbell's work will be in retrospect. He's finally getting the attention he's earned. His turn in Flower Moon surprised me as well because it was a rather substantial part. i thought it'd only be a cameo but that boy can act!
Also meant to say, Jason Isbell recently produced Josh Ritter's excellent album Fever Breaks. Highly recommend it. So i guess Isbell is a 5x threat - singer, songwriter, musician, actor and producer!
Jason's music is just starting to show on my music radar. I have two of his albums on CD. Thank you for this detail review of this album and I am looking forward to listening to it. In this Taylor Swift music world we are in now it is a shame that such artist like Jason do not get the attention he deserves from the general public. For me mainstream popular music for the most part has nothing to offer me anymore so I have to go down thought the off beaten path to find worthy new artist who is worthy of my listening time. There is still many newer excellent songwriters. Fleet Foxes, My Morning Jacket are lead by excellent songwriters. Valerie June and Michael Kiwanuka are great as well. When you get a chance check out Valerie last album The Moon and Stars a Prescriptions for dreamers. If you like it I would love to see you do a review on it. The album is like a cosmic folk album. Good Day :)
