Such a haunting album, a harrowing and psychologically lucid exploration of a wearied, yearning world. I'm not sure I'd put it above Southeastern, but it's another modern classic.

I love how Save the World has some really funky time signature switches in the main verses as a way to keep us off balance, under striking the narrative.

Weathervanes is still in my rotation. It has so much heart, and Isbell never disappoints. Some of these songs just break your freaking heart

@@corycosta1818 He is aware of who Jason Isbell is yet for some reason hasn't talked about him :( Edit: Yeah I'd say a light 7/10 is way too less for this album, but given that he isn't a big fan of Jason and still appreciated the album is good enough for me.

@@GameJunkyard11 yea I wish fantano would go outside his main field of pop/rock/hip-hop a bit more but given that himself n mark have a good professional relationship and that fantano has covered both adeem the artist and McKinley Dixon, then I reckon there's hope yet

This is my fav album not just of the year but the decade so far. Every single second is brilliant. Every note every vocal every lyric is flawless. Like this isn’t a masterpiece of an album this is an era defining up there with blond on blond or ziggy stardust level masterpice

When We Were Close twice references Townes Van Zandt songs to invoke this fatalistic romantic aesthetic of the doomed artist. Sometimes choosing life can seem like a compromise.

Recency bias aside, I sincerely think both King of Oklahoma and Cast Iron Skillet may just be his two finest songs (which is saying quite a lot).

I think you’re making far too many personal connections between Isbell and the stories. It’s a fantastic album and he’s an unparalleled writer. Not every song is a direct representation of an artists’ personal perspective. After all, the intertwining of fact and fiction is his craft.

I’m a huge Isbell fan, but I’m not blown away by this album. It has a couple bright spots, but on the whole it’s not his best songwriting. It does sound like they had fun making this album, which is probably a welcome change for the band. But that generational songwriting took a bit of a back seat on this album.
