James Kenny (GBR) wins gold in the men's track cycling sprint in the Velodrome at the London 2012 Olympic Games (6 August 2012).
Gregory Bauge (FRA) won the silver medal in the event in the race contested in a best of 3 series.
Cycling is among the rare sports that have always featured on the Olympic programme. Road cycling, however, was not on the programme of the Paris 1900, St Louis 1904 or London 1908 Games, while track cycling wasn't in the programme of the Stockholm 1912 Games.
The first road event in Olympic history took place in 1896 on the marathon route at the first Games of the modern era in Athens. The race started in Athens, headed towards Marathon, then returned to Athens, at the Phaliron velodrome.
Olympic cycling was added to the women's programme in Los Angeles in 1984, with an individual road event.

7:55 "The boy from Bolton cries". This 50 year old had tears welling up almost two years later, just watching that. Though I don't think our funding of the Olympics has been used right by politicians, the Super Saturday athletics & much of the velodrome briefly seemed to make it worthwhile.

@james1071

The tactics are all to do with wind resistance. If they ride fast from the start, the second rider will get a much easier ride and be able to sprint past at the end. They ride slowly because they are trying to force the other to lead. The rider at the front will be looking back to watch for a surprise move.

@paulcasey4282
@paulcasey4282 5 лет назад
The reason they start so slow is because if you start racing fast and the other person is in your slipstream they will use 80% less energy and overtake easily later on
@ynotnilknarf39
@ynotnilknarf39 5 лет назад
only IF the rider behind reacts quick enough to a quick start. Kenny did this to Bauge some years ago and caught him out, it was only because Kenny moved out from his line right on the last bend did Bauge get the win. it's a useful tactic if you're wanting to keep the bigger, more powerful sprinters honest and your opponent guessing.
@Newrangetank

Best of three races, taking it in turns to lead off first. The two cyclists jockey for best ‘race’ position for two laps, then when the bell goes they have one final lap to race to the finish. It’s usually easier to come from behind as you can slipstream then ‘out-jump’ your opponent (as Kenny did in race one). That’s why they start really slowly to try and force their opponent to the front.

Kenny has tried a flying three laps before and did win the heat - but then was relegated for slipping out of the sprint lane. It's hard work and you can only succeed if you lead off and catch your opponent completely cold. Kenny's ability to ride two laps without look ahead once - amazing!

+Zaed Harhara Have u been racing in a sprint on track? if u start off all your energy, u prob can't finish with your full speed, then u get tired after halfway. so u start off slow then builds up and find the perfect opportunity to over take and explode your full power thats why lol

@nico3444 8 лет назад
+michael' "explode your full power" that's a good one
@meldeebueno
@meldeebueno 8 лет назад
+michael' Why can't just start fast like foot sprints. You do that saving the energy thing for distance races, this is just a sprint, right?
@safarektal8380
@safarektal8380 8 лет назад
+Rolan Reynacido, because the speed in cycling is much higher than in running the rider sitting behind saves a lot of energy because the rider in front of him is breaking the air. If they just went out full hammer from the start the rider behind will have a huge advantage. Because of this it becomes a tactical race. In running every runner has his one lane so nobody can have an advantage of drafting. In longer runs it also starts to become a bit tactical but nit as much as in cycling.very different from running. The rider behind saves roughly 30-35 % energy. This means that if the rider in front is cycling with 1000 watts which is possible over a shorter distance the rider behind only has to use 650-700 watts to keep up. As soon as he gets out of the slipstream he will also have to pedal with 1000 watts to maintain some speed.
