A suggestion you might want to put boards at the bottom of your tin because if a animal steps at the edge and pulls their foot out it could get cut pretty bad. I have seen where a horse has cut half their hoof off from the metal
@kathyj3426
@kathyj3426 Год назад
This is a serious risk- Ive seen a cow and goat lose their foot and leg. Please put board at bottom!!!
@marcykinsey92
@marcykinsey92 Год назад
My thoughts exactly, a goat could loose half the hind off of a leg. It won’t take long for the animals to learn to push it out and pop the screws out, In a year it will be all bent and looking bad that thin metal was never ment to be used to house animals, that’s the reason there is always skirting used on the bottom 3 feet of a barn. That little cow will have fun with that.

You needed sand and clay and fill to level up to your baseboard at the lowest spot making the floor level from front to back. That mulch is just gonna hold water and sour .
@JosEPh-zy3yr
@JosEPh-zy3yr Год назад
You got to cut a channel to divert the water Before it gets to the barn. The mulch will turn into muck too without a rain ditch that goes around the barn.

I think putting a french drain around the building would end the water issue in and around the building to drain the water toward that lower ground or, dig in a pond around that area, for when the dry weather comes
@KenG557
@KenG557 Год назад
That pond seems to have more water than the ones you built. You might just need the pond where nature puts it? A gasoline powered garden tiller might help with all of your digging and soil work. Have fun! 👍

Trench around the entire barn, lay flexible perforated foundation drain pipe into the trench around the entire barn diverting the water away. Then pour yourself a nice concrete slab inside the barn to keep the animals high n dry. Easier to clean too.
@nicolewalker3820

Yes that's what I was thinking. Lay draining title like farmers do with a sock on it to keep depree out. Also maybe put gravel in barn then pour concrete. Makes it easy to remove old dirt and manure. Also helps keep it cleaner when those kids show up!

Instead of mulch for the stalls, use sawdust. It's more absorbent, cleaner and easier to move and remove. Also sawdust can be obtained from local sawmills, usually for free. And the used sawdust makes excellent bedding for flower gardens. Just a suggestion from an old horse breeder.

Have you thought of digging a trench around the barn to divert the water, something on the line of a french drain lined with gravel so it doesn’t fill in? Eventually, you could put a small berm around the one side of the barn to redirect it outward or regrade.

I've seen a few people in the comments say put a board at the bottom. In my opinion, it may be better to actually "wall up" the bottom 3ft of the walls. (Think shiplap style) I have horses and an old barn built the way y'all have your's (just bigger of course) and after how ever many years of the stalls being used, the ground itself has actually pushed the bottom of the tin out. And with goats this will happen a LOT faster... There should be a solid wall atleast as tall as the goats to help prevent this. Plywood may even work too but it may rot at the ground quicker than boards would. You guys are doing a great job so far!

Sandy dirt would've been awesome for the drainage. The compost will work too just not drain as fast. Been there done that. Made the mistake of lining stalls with crushed limestone myself. That stuff don't drain,ugh! End up using more bedding when it won't drain good.

Maybe you can find a hydrologist to help with grading the land around the barn so you won’t have muddy stalls. Wet feet are not good for cloven hoofed feet.
@MichaelBrown-xu7lv
@MichaelBrown-xu7lv Год назад
I mean, chipped wood makes your mulch easier and more consistent to work with, and wood chippers are very handy on farm land. Chipped wood also speeds up the decaying process in mulch. Trenching will help. Now, footers would have been nice with 2 rows of brick to block about 8 inches of water, but that's in retrospect. Hmm, footers make sense now, being the lowest part of a building. We live, and we learn.

I think you should have sorted through the mulch get rid of big sticks and let it sit for a few days to dry out and turn your mulch so that it all gets mix with dry and wet. I think it’s easier. But I wouldn’t of used that in the barn. That’s better for gardening. One of your other subscribers said to use clay and sand. I would have gone with that solution. Next time you need to make a concrete barrier or a foundation for barns. Good luck.
