They used to say that the loudest thing you could hear in a Rolls Royce was the 'ticking of the clock' - in this case it might actually be true!

The 1931 Rolls had some interesting features. The horn had a volume control, the headlights were rheostat variable to any brightness, and it had no vent window on the doors but if you roll the window all the way up and keep cranking the window moved back into the post to expose a vent slot so you can get some air.

Viking; so I watched the JM episode and the reason it took so long to retrofit this vehicle is the company he used doesn't modify the vehicle. They redesign the EV system to wedge into an existing vehicle so if desired a future owner could easily unbolt and remove the EV gear to go back to the authentic collector parts. Check in on how the Ford aftermarket EV engine replacement project is doing (they had that F100 with bolt-on EV powertrain a year or two ago).

I got rid of my 1938 Morris 14/6 as it was just undriveable on today's roads and traffic. If EV conversions had come along earlier, I would have kept it and changed it to electric. The car had a great history and only 4 owners. Would still have had a problem with the steering though as it had a turning circle similar to an ocean going ship!

Each to their own, for sure. I approve of the Range Rover conversion, but struggle with approving the conversion of the vintage Rolls. Of course the owner has every right to do as they please. And of course I understand that conversion of the Rolls undoubtedly makes the car more usable, which is a very good thing. I just hope it's going to get used regularly post-conversion. If not, I would prefer if he had left it original. The Range Rover on the other hand originally had the so-called Rover V8, which was originally a Buick design. While there's a fan base for this engine, and it was widely used, I have personal experience of two versions and both had the same problems. In fact, they had the same problems as most British engines of the time, and that is they typically clapped out between 70 and 80,000 miles, despite being generally tuned for relatively low power and low stress. Consequently, I consider the Range Rover classic, as it has come to be called, is ripe for an EV conversion.

@@abefrancis4137 If so, then fine, but it didn't sound at all easily reversible. Once you've cut into the body and chassis, which they have clearly done, reversing the mods involves patching and new paint. If they've modified the dash front, then a new dash would have to be made, etc. That's not exactly what I think most people would consider genuinely reversible. As I said, while I understand the mod, I struggle to approve of it. IMO, some cars should be left original. But if it's now going to be used regularly rather than sitting rarely used, I guess I would reluctantly approve, especially if all the original parts have been retained. Of course, no one needs my approval to do anything with their own property.

@@nigel.w i tend to agree. I didn’t watch it carefully enough to verify the comment that it was reversible. I have ‘78 VW camper and recently had the engine rebuilt. I would convert it to electric but not for a while. I would miss the unique sound of the engine but wouldn’t miss the maintenance and tuning (twin carbs, alloy heads). Modern fuel additives are hell for old carbureted engines as well. Mine runs like shit on 98 and even 95 RON fuel.

I wouldn't be surprised if the original engine was unfixable. As a 100yo engine, the only place you'd be able to get new parts is to have them bespoke made made by a machinist.And something that age probably had every single component rusted solid.

The real value of this resto-mod by Jason is that I could promote the adopt of regular EVs with people who are his fans. Remember that for every EV put on the road an ICE car is taken off the road.

Have heard details from another video source that the old 40-50hp 7-litre engine has been replaced with a 201 bhp motor and 90 kWh of batteries. THAT will give the old girl some kick! 5:01 - re the conversion time. They had to integrate the RR's oil-lubrication system (for what I am not sure) which was powered by the engine, the batteries were distributed in several areas, and the interior was restored with period-style EV controls and a full top-quality Bluetooth sound system.

Cool RR, but does it have a NACS charge port? Who wants to deal with charge adapters on a Rolls once Tesla opens up its SC network. So far only about 3 dozen are open to non-Teslas.

Jason’s 1929 Roller is no longer a Rolls Royce. He has converted a beautiful historic car into an appliance, similar to his electric washing machine or clothes dryer.

I don't have a clue about Jason Momoa and I'm not especially interested in his electric Rolls but as you decided to do this article you might as well present the story in an unembelished way without introducing extraneous opinions on the man.
