Hard Nose the Highway is one of the Van albums I forgot to listen to and now I can't stop listening to it. What a masterpiece...just a reminder of why he's my favorite artist of all time. Thanks Jason!

The choice of floral patterned wallpaper, colors and font in the thumbnail is perfection. Really groovy.

"The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get" is Joe Walsh's masterpiece (especially the song "Days Gone By").

The new format really kicked in on this one. The conversational style helped immensely. As different from the hosts the music I enjoy might be, it is the way you articulate your favorites that keeps me coming back. 1973 continued the rest of the world beyond the US and UK joining the musical conversation. Probably how McCartney ended up in Nigeria, following in the footsteps of Ginger Baker. And Eno would find his way to Germany soon after. And Paul Simon's Rhymin'' Simon stretches beyond the Bronx. I do like Hard Nose The Highway, it's Kermit cover and all, but can't fathom it being enjoyed more than St Dominic's Preview. Quadrophenia is the only big miss i see. The pinnacle of Townshend's writing.

Some of your picks I've never heard & I'm going to listen to them 👍 a few things: Buckingham Nicks is absolutely amazing, I've been a long time fan of it; I think your reaction is very similar to most B/N-era FM fans that it's like this glorious lost FM record. So many fantastic tracks on there.... Joe Walsh is my spirit animal & his first 5 solo albums post-JG are essential & loaded with incredible deep cuts.... finally, i sincerely want to thank you, Jason, for hipping me to both T Rex & Mott the Hoople, who are now two huge favorites of mine, and big thanks to Joe for making me a huge Gene Clark fan.. HUGE. and i personally love Roadmaster even more than No Other (yeah, crazy!) So I was especially ecstatic to see it on this Top list of 1973 💥🤩 TLM 4ever 🌀💛

Superb list by Jason 👍👍 It's a list that pretty much represents 1973. Dark Side at #10(very low) is a surprise but an awesome list overall.

Great list. Great year. 1973 is absolutely one of my favourites. It was the year I properly discovered music, though I was too young then to discover all of the great music released that year. A lot of that came later. Some of it is still coming. But the defining and no-contest No.1 album of 1973 for me is Aladdin Sane. To this day, I know that album word perfect, and back to front, because I played it relentlessly on cassette in the winter of 73-74 behind the closed door of my bedroom in a desperate attempt to keep lyrics such as 'Suck, baby, suck, give me your head' and 'He flexes like a whore/Falls wanking to the floor' from the ears of an Irish Catholic mother who, had she heard them, would have come at me with the holy water in a spray can, fetched a priest or maybe even organised an actual exorcism. You don't want to know what happened to the cover of my elder brother's copy of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Houses Of The Holy got more than a few concerned looks too. Being subversive and breaking taboos was hard work in 1973. Took more than tats, piercings and pronouns. I doubt I could meaningfully put together a top 25 album list, but Roxy Music's Stranded - Brian Eno and I agree, it is their best - and For Your Pleasure would also be very close to the top. I know exactly what Jason means about Dark Side of the Moon. It's now more an edifice of engineering to be admired than music to be enjoyed. Maybe it should only be open to tourists from now on. Can't agree about Hard Nose The Highway being better than St Dominic's Preview, the title track of which is better to my ears than the entirety of Hard Nose (with its startlingly bad artwork and hippy drivel liner notes). Definitely do agree about Queen's debut. Not sure they ever bettered it, but that's mainly because of 'Liar'. Oh, and Slade were definitely more the kids' end of the glam spectrum. Mott The Hoople were the pasty-faced, dissipated, dirty dog end of the spectrum. So, you know, fun. But Slade were great live, apparently. According to some, much more reliably so than T.Rex by the mid-1970s. By which point Marc was often Champagne cheery but not always match fit. Really not persuaded Tanx is better than Electric Warrior. Nope, sorry. Think it's high time I properly investigated Todd Rundgren's A Wizard, A True Star. See, another actual TLM prompt. You are a bona-fide public service. Final thought about 1973 (for now): throughout the summer, there was just no escaping The Carpenters' 'Yesterday Once More', Elton's 'Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting' and Bowie's 'Life on Mars'. Told you it was a great year. Look forward to Joe's. Merry Christmas.

Great list, the new #1 makes perfect sense for you. This year was a lot of fun to deep dive and I did a bigger one than I usually do with a final tally of 209 albums. Hi! You did a great album ranking for one of the best years in music history. I have most of the albums you mention on my top 20 list but have never heard the Buckingham/Nicks, Duncan Browne and Joe Walsh albums and Roxy Music is not my music. I think I choose Poco - Crazy Eyes instead of Gram Parsons and some other ones that will make my list are Beach Boys - Holland, Mike Oldfield --Tubular Bells, Jackson Browne - For Everyman & Renaissance - Ashes Are Burning.

Great List Jason. I understand your placement of Dark Side. It is my favourite album of all time mainly because I was 15 when it was released and it just blew my adolescent brain. It is hardwired in there and it will always be my number one. Glad to see Van on your list BUT NO NO NO Hard Nose is not better than St Dom. For me St Dom comes in with Veedon Fleece and Into the Music as just behind the big two of Astral Weeks and Moondance. But as always great entertainment. 1973 was a wonderful year for music. The three albums missing from your list that would definitely be on mine are: Selling England by the Pound, Quadrophenia and Tubular Bells. Thanks again.

What a fantastic year. To my thinking, it was the last of the "60's overhang" years. The early 70's had a late 60's feel about them. But this aesthetic ended after 1973. After that, the 70's ambience really kicked in. As a child back then I remember being very disappointed with music after 1973/74. I yearned for the wilder, less conventional music of '70, '71, '72 and '73. So in a way, '73 was the last gasp of that counter-cultural period. Cheers.

Great list again Jason. A lovely surprise to see Mott at number one. It wasn't the most creative or artistic release in '73, not even close, but it was a marvellous diary of a band at their peak. Hunter never wrote better songs and lyrics, that capture the highs and lows of the rock and roll circus. Such a pity that they were falling apart even as they made their best record. The follow-up was good but the magic was here.

1973 has a ton of great albums but for me it’s a tie for the album of the year between two monumental, insanely perfect albums: Quadrophenia and The Dark Side Of The Moon. Two totally perfect albums I’ve been listening to for about 35 years.

Live -Genesis MY BAND OF THE YEAR: The Wailers MY ARTIST OF THE YEAR: Elton John 1973 continued a string of fantastic years (though I consider it a small step down from the years that immediately precede it). I hated leaving out so many great acts- John Cale, Allman Bros., Judee Sill, Fleetwood Mac, Paul Simon, ELP, Aerosmith, Mike Oldfield, Faust, Queen, Hall & Oates, Doobie Brothers, Al Green, The Eagles, Alice Cooper, Little Feat, Toots & The Maytals, The Faces, Joe Walsh, Mott the Hoople, The Mothers, Nektar, Status Quo, John Prine, Budgie, Funkadelic- but them's the breaks. The Wailers win my band award for their pair of paradigm-shifting reggae albums (Catch a Fire made my top 5, and Burnin' just barely missed my top 25). Elton John is my solo artist of the year for dishing out two classic LPs of his own (GYBR made my top 5 and 'Don't Shoot Me...' snuck into my top 20).

Really good year for music

“Wakin’ and Bakin’ with Ricky Wakeman!” (It’s a funny title since he was the ONLY member of 70s Yes who was NOT a partaker of the “Sweet Leaf.” Two! Two!! Two jokes in one!!!) At any rate, the reason l bring up Wakeman is to just point out that he only played keys on “Sabbra Cadabra” on your 1973 Sabs slab o’ wax. The keys on “Who Are You” are actually played by Ozzy, Tony & Geezer. As you stated with Zep, these cats were also growing in leaps and bounds with every release. Although on vast amounts of “Bolivian marching powder,” the Black Sabbath dudes were and are all talented musicians and songwriters. And Bill Ward’s drumming is also magnificent. I hate to be a stickler on details, but my OCD forces me to nitpick at times. Keep up the sterling work men! Cheers from Noo Yawk ova heyah. Murray Christmas and Happy New Year! You had way more classic rock staples on your list than I was expecting - I was fully anticipating not knowing most of your picks but I knew 2/3s of them. Jason is too young to know Ian Hunter had reached a *'Moment-Of-Songwriting-Clarity'* at this time! How did you know that rather 'nuanced' tidbit? (Good Job!) 10 favorites of the year: 10. Living in the Material World: George Harrison. A nice, mellow follow-up to the bigger (and admittedly better) All Things Must Pass. 9. Desperado: Eagles. The only one of their albums that actually feels like an album. 8. GP: Gram Parsons. The first half is better than the second, but it's an incredible solo debut. 7. Shotgun Willie: Willie Nelson. One of his finest collections of songs. 6. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: Elton John. The rare double album that deserves to be a double album. The opening track, the title track, and Harmony are the highlights for me. 5. Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player: Elton John. I couldn't leave either one off the list. I just find this one a little more streamlined with some of the prettiest melodies of his career. High Flyin' Bird is in contention for my favorite Elton snog. 4. Innervisions: Stevie Wonder. The next 3 albums could change depending on the mood. Pure Stevie Wonder from start to finish. 3. Goats Head Soup: The Rolling Stones. My favorite Stones album. Heartbreaker, Angie, 100 Years Ago, and so many underrated classics. 2. The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle: Bruce Springsteen. A great improvement over his debut, which I think is quite good but underwhelming when compared to his whole catalog. Even if I like his next run of albums even better, I still get hyped every time Rosalita starts, and New York City Serenade and Sandy set a beautiful scene like no one else can. 1. Holland: The Beach Boys. Not just my favorite Beach Boys album, but one of my top 5 albums of all time. This album connects with me in a way that few others can, from the sparse beauty of Big Sur and Steamboat to the depth of The Trader and the irresistibly catchy California Saga: California. They never had another album like this one. A few honorable mentions: Sweet Revenge (John Prine), Hard Nose the Highway (Van Morrison), Pronounced (Lynyrd Skynyrd)

Jason’s list has much more of a West Coast/ country rock vibe then mine, but very solid list. Totally down with Mott at #1, it’s in my top 5 and I’m glad to see him acknowledge Johnny Winter. Im curious if he’s heard Solid Air by John Martyn or Paris 1919 by John Cale, I think he would like those But I have to disagree on one thing, no way does Hard Nose the Highway touch St Dominick’s Preview, or even the Veedon Fleece in ‘74.

My homework after this video: 1) Revisit and reevaluate Band on the Run - given that it's the most Beatlesque Paul album, I obviously have it rated too low. 2) Listen to the Buckingham/Nicks album. If it's that good, it's kind of insane that it's out of print. 3) Give the first Queen album a fresh listen.

1973 was the year that the solo Beatles released 5 albums. I was wondering if you were going to include any of them in your top 25 and did include both McCartney LP's. I can see why John and George's LP didn't make it but Ringo's was a bit of a miracle and I thought might be a contender. His LP was the only time a solo Beatle had two #1 hits from the same LP.

Jason... please give Slade another chance... WITHOUT THE VISUALS. "How Does it Feel" "Won't Let it 'appen Again" "In For A Penny" "Everyday"... all great songs IMHO. Not much of an albums band but lots of songs sprinkled throughout. 👍

Pretty good list but no Quadraphenia is a big miss for me. 5* top 5 album of all time. I also think you may not have heard the best of Slade, some of their deep cuts are amazing, but always a better live band that on record so also check out their live album Slade Alive, it’s killer. Slade in Flame (1972) is also a great rock film.
