Most important thing said in the whole talk is at 1:05. Stories are what you tell to children to help them fall asleep, this is so incredibly important. The world's addiction to narrative is the skin we have to shed if we want to understand the path through the 21st century. Everyone wants their story to be THE story but the internet in it's infancy is already dismantling that. The era we will enter soon is that of the recombining. It is not a game, a game is still a story, it is a poem.

I like Joe Rogan's response to Jason Silva when he was on one of his 'merging with computers' trips on his podcast. [Roughly paraphrasing] "Come on. Are you saying we won't have to take shits anymore? That you'll be so advanced you won't have to take a shit?"

CrypticCalamari People who continue to push technology before we as a species have even learned how to use the technology we have currently responsibly are only going to continue to contribute to the trend of systems, and fictitious non-entities that only exist on paper, being more important that human beings and other living things. Don't get me wrong, technology is great, but we need to SLOW DOWN and learn what we're doing before we just jump to the next big thing.
@swordarmstudios6052
@swordarmstudios6052 9 лет назад
Chris Revocateur Slowdown by what metric exactly, and at who's direction? Like all revolutions and progress, it's a self-dircted process that doesn't have anyone driving. Also the longer you slowdown, the more time you give to forces that do not want new technologies that are better, to devise strategies to lock in their market dominance. Every technological improvement has been better for the human race than what has come before. And even the ugly parts like nuclear weapons are still arguably superior to conventional weapons, in that they are so aweful, that peace between large countries is possible in a way that it wasn't before. Even Cars and burning carbon, with all it's negative effects, was better the horses, family farms and muscle power that they replaced. I'm betting that the next round of tech that is made will in fact better than the stuff we use now. I don't think that's a crazy idea. I'm not intrested in learning how to use combustion engines responsibly. I want to replace them. With regard to ficticous entities, I would say that since economic growth is actually just a proxy for technological growth, I'd say that really doesn't matter that much. People are being treated very well, much better than we have say 50 or 100 years ago. Both our economic systems and our political systems reflect this. And if a 'ficticous' entitiy is worth 500 billion dollars, representing trillions of economic output over the lifetime of the institution compounded, i would say since that amount of wealth can pull hundreds of thousands of people out of poverty for generations, that these institutions are pretty important, and maybe even more important than a single individual. Though experiment - if you had to kill apple computer or kill a person, which would you kill? I'd probally kill the person, and it would be the morally correct choice, because killing apple computer would put 200,000 people out of work, and wipe hundreds of billions of dollars of productive wealth off the map, resulting in more poverty. Just the charities paid by apple and apple employees justifies apples existance in lue of a single person, when you consider the lives they would save. So i'm not really worried about paper instutions destroying our moral fiber. sure, some institutions cause problems. Such is life. But i'm not so worried about what a few will do badly, that I fear the effects of an otherwise objectively positive technological improvement. Waiting for us to gather 'wisdom' , that we can't even define accurately without technology to enable more sensible replacements, is a fools errand. I'm going to assume that people in general are unwise, but selfish. So given those facts, technology generally makes things cheaper and cleaner over time, i'm leaning towards developing it now and learning as we go. The lessons are cheapest now when something is new.

Jason has managed to build a name on pure enthusiasm, rehashing the same tweet-sized, espresso profundities for years. Doesn't lead anywhere, really, but it's a good story to peddle, the possible cynicism being much preferable and healthier viewpoint. Douglas is much more sober I find, although he himself has seems to have a pro-human sentimentality, reality-porn which is awestruck by banality just because it's "real". Interesting talk, even if disjointed.
@avedic
@avedic 8 лет назад
+gavranarh Interesting comment, even if I don't entirely agree with you. ;) Fair criticism of Jason though. I like the guy; personally I prefer his brand of exuberance to total and constant cynicism. But, I'd like Jason's approach a _lot_ more...if he ditched the *_constant_* quote mining and extreme-ADD kid who drank too much Mountain Dew vibe. It can be...grating. Still, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't _jealous_ and in awe of Jason's seemingly unlimited reservoir of energy and passion. : P
@pogmog
@pogmog 8 лет назад
+avedic The constant "quote mining" used to get on my nerves because it is a bit jarring. I still don't particularly like it (in an aesthetic sense) but it's kind of nice that he doesn't hide the trace of his thoughts, and that he is attributing the originality of them back to the people who inspired the idea in the first place. I mean, it could just be a purely rhetoric device, but I've decided to have faith in his enthusiasm and believe that he just wants to share.
@erwinmalimban2197

It's great that you shared this discussion. Both of you are great minds in your own field of ideas and this kind of discussion brings out the best of both. Many people are commenting on Douglas' ideas but I don't think that Douglas is a downer/negative person. He just acknowledges the truth that he sees in reality and I somewhat share this view of the truth. He has this "classical" kind of thinking that is somewhat a contrast to Jason's "romantic" thinking. I sometimes think that Shots of Awe is too far off the center of the spectrum. Maybe it is not filtering itself enough. But Shots of Awe is one of the best channels in RU-vid nonetheless. I just want to remind everyone that you should always take everything you watch with a grain of salt. Always be on the edge.

douglas perspective is clearly narrow, its like he doesnt recognize the profoundness of what jason is pointing at.. so the only way we would inhabit a virtual reality is because we are trying to get away from something? Is the only reason to improve to get away from something? if so should we stop improving? If we just improve for the joy of improving, following awe, following what makes us really incredibly happy and buzzing with AWE, delight and beauty... should we do that? I think so. Uploading ourselves into a virtual reality need not be an escape, it might be a forward leap into greater awareness.
@dubstepmarin
@dubstepmarin 9 лет назад
At first I disliked Douglas because he was passively aggressive in his contrarianism towards Jason's beliefs, and i disliked how douglass deflected the entire discussion away from jasons desire to turn the discussion towards what in my opinion is Jason's strength and charisma, his framing of his interests (the montessori way is go by what interests you); which are the ways he contextualizes an interesting idea on what's coming in the future or what we are building ourselves/world into, via a quote, then paraphrases an authors ideas on the future possibilities and uses great metaphorical tangents for casual listeners/viewers to shore up our understanding of what it means (I am given a future hack by listening to Jason, its more a newsletter in a way for me, often times a spiritual newsletter at that).. But then I realized that even though the discussion could have gone a more shots of awe route, I saw the character gradually reveal itself of both these men, and the annoying contrarian opinions of Douglass became more and more clear, especially hitting it on the head when he mentioned pulling apart technological progress from economic industrial modeled profit motives.. Douglass at the end appeared to me to be a man being an extreme contarian for a reason, and his reason to represent the artisan way, the way of social capital and of not getting lost in the cloud forming from all this infotech, which will eventually culminate in many ways Jason describes.. I enjoyed the catharsis at the end, and seeing jasons character being tested by one who has seen both sides, the Princeton and the dark places in life, and balanced himself from both sides of the worlds metaphorical coin.. I am proud of Jason for being a good sport and uploading this video on principle as a philosopher, following the ideals of dialectic discussion.. He learned something.. I am apt to think that his friendship with ray k. may be one in which he is being manipulated and used as rays public spokesman, as Douglass was implying I think.. Shots of awe has a lot of subscribers, ray knows this, and Jason is a good looking, smart, well speaking and charismatic figure I was pretty sold on as a voice to listen to unquestioningly. I still am but I hope he understood where Douglass has and was coming from. Bravo to both of you, both of you are nice avatar like representatives of what I am aware of is cutting edge upcoming events in our world and future.

I enjoyed both positions. Douglas makes a great point that we should not eliminate human interaction despite the advances of technology. Ultimately, human interaction supersedes technology. When you remove the action of humans interacting with other humans you create numb individuals who are trapped in a virtual reality. A great book to read is "Alone together. Why we expect more from technology and less from each other" - Sherry Turkle

We're talking about evolutionary success. Nobody is really thinking about ecological catastrophe that we currently have. Mass extinction on species both plants and animal. Oceans full of trash. What future we have with the technology when we have no place to live, no clean air to breathe, no fish to eat. Gonna live inside of facebook or twitter pages? I don't think we can really think about expansion and evolution but rather survival and global manipulation. Just my opinion. Great show anyway.

This guy Douglas Rushkoff, it's the worst kind of liberal that there is, he totally freaking hate capitalist. And what about that part that he was saying "oh, but now thatis cheaper to make a film it's harder to get people attention, and get people to watch your content." Yeah, genius! It's because that a lot more people making videos and songs and art! I don't... he had really pessimist view of the future.

Douglas is more objective and enjoys reality more it seems, I agree with him on why watching a movie to give you a cool experience instead of creating that experience with real people in real situations by yourself, reality is available at every moment and that's why I agree with him. Best things in life are free, movies may be cool but not as cool as creating that experience yourself.
@leftmid41
@leftmid41 9 лет назад
Sebastián Jácome I too would agree that creating the experience in reality is more rewarding. I also believe that movies cannot do as well as our imagination. You often hear people say the books were better than the movies. The difference is that movies are easier to experience than books and take up much less time. Same is true for creating experiences in reality.

You wasted your comment to point out the irrelevant awkwardness that normally happens in discussions of two people expressing their ideas. It happens. This comment made other people judge Douglas and thus giving some kind of bias on the topic. It is very careless of you given that you had the opportunity to make this discussion more productive and relevant. Don't think that I hate you and I am being a snob and judging you for the comment. I like Jason Silva but I don't think some people get it, it's fun the virtual reality but to live in it means you're further cocooning yourself when you are already under several layers of bizarre shit that most people don't even think about for some reason. I think what we immediately see or perceive, is only the first wall and we can sort of feel there's way more out there and not just universes and nothing.
@pogmog
@pogmog 8 лет назад
+Aravind Nair I feel that Rushkoff wanted to make that point but didn't explicitly do so. When Silva was talking about "reality" becoming a relative term, and likening it to Inception, I reckon the Rushkoff wanted to say that virtual reality (regardless of value judgements) is encapsulated in the more primal "natural" world. The virtual cocooning that Silva seems to want would mean a greater control over the experiential world, but Rushkoff says that we have to bring what we created/saw from within the cocoon back to the primal level to attack or modify the "several layers of bizarre shit that people don't even think about". Returning back from the virtual cocoon may give us the tools to investigate the layers of bizarre shit. I don't know if I would link this to the notion of an eternal consciousness that pre-dates the big bang, however (which Rushkoff brought up momentarily). Although, I feel like Silva may argue that it's cocoons all the way down, so we may as well create our own.

It is clear that governing systems are at a serious disconnect from humanity. @ 1.04.45 what are the intentions/stories of those who have been steering the Starship? "Mimir was an Aesirian god also believed to be a water spirit ... he resided by and guarded a Well of Wisdom... drank from this well daily and was recorded to be “the wisest of the world’s beings.” The eldest Norse god, Odin, according to the text, was in need of the wisdom to save the world from destruction. He sought to drink from this well, but Mimir’s fee for a drink from the well was steep: the seeker’s right eye. Hesitantly, Odin made this sacrifice to receive a drink. It is said his eye was then tossed into the well so that others would see the price that must be paid." -E.C. Rammel/Beth

What do you think of this: Mystics and psychonauts have the "we are all one" experience. DR, the 99% of yourself you have not integrated (or woken) may correlate with the 99% of humanity that is under oppression, who are not free to imagine much in a situation where the tech could now easily free them. Free them (say with Basic Income) and you can test how or if "we are all one" - if widespread freedom opens vaults of creativity, you in your depth dives might find some more of your own 99% waking up.

Shots of Awe I dare you to try similar conversations or forums in the future where everyone in the audience comes with the intention of being mic'd up and/or with video camera glasses for the socializing discussion after the main conversation. There are a lot of cool dynamics that could be explored through that kind of non-linear event recording. Maybe offer a few sponsors prizes or other incentives for the best question or thought stream or feedback loop or solution to an important problem or paradox? Would need to get a few people to then mash up the records which might make it ideal for a university team of volunteers. With plenty of planning one could even recreate the entire event virtually so that people could revisit like a game. I don't know what the best kind of name for event recording like this, I have been playing with the term "Quantum Event Recording" What do you think?

29 minute mark: "Creativity is doing what humans do: constant learning in limitless possibilities." I'm so grateful to watch this - free. Thank you for this medicine

There are SO many points from this I disagree and agree with. Douglas, you're a beautiful pessimist, lol. Jason, watch this daily (for medicine). I love you both. :) #keepdoingwhatyou'redoin #hashtagz #let'supgrade #beammeupscotty #jokes #humor #ihavelittleicanreference #skool #joinusforadrink #butwe'realreadyhigh

I liked the talk, but MAN he's kind of a downer. To me it seems clear he is the epitome of an Enlightened Conservative, mainly focusing of the negative aspects of "the new". Nothing wrong with that, really. We need those kinds of people to mitigate headlong progress, but it's funny to see the two extremes of thought together. I'm more of a Jason Silva kinda guy myself.

I also want to add that Douglas Rushkoffs comments on the last question on education was brilliant.

I only watched for a few minutes but it seems to me that the difference between the two is that one is more focused on the here and now, whereas Jason is kinda like constantly looking over the present moment's shoulders to see what lies ahead and dreaming about the endless possibilities of human creativity. While admirable, it leaves one in a constant state of dissatisfaction with the present or at least not paying attention to what's happening all around since the mind keeps fantasizing about the future. What bothers me with Jason really is that he keeps identifying our humanness with our technologies, the rover on mars, the Hubble telescope, smartphones..etc what about trees, mountains, clouds and rivers, constant reminders of what we really are. We are more than the products of our imagination for crying out loud.
