It’s common for gems to destroy organic life when colonizing. The planets still have ecosystems like deserts and tundras etc but all local plant life is usually destroyed by the process of gem making. The gems growing in the ground pull all the nutrients and minerals and everything they need out of the ground making it barren and uninhabitable for organics of any kind. Jasper spent a great deal of time off earth. She also wouldn’t know or bother to know local plant names because in her logic why should she? it’s all going to be destroyed anyway. She learns the plant name for grass when Steven mentions it.
