This video covers the overhaul of the JATCO CVT transmission used in many Nissan, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Jeep, and Dodge vehicles. If you are working on a 2007 to current FWD Nissan, you likely have a CVT. This video covers the JF011E, which is also called the RE0F10A/B or the CVT 2 or 3. I know, confusing isn't it. Well, at least rebuilding the transmission won't be as confusing after watching this video. This video would also apply to a JF009e (RE0F08a/b) and A JF010e (RE0F09a/b,) because they basically operate the same and use the same process for rebuilding.
In this video, I cover disassembly, inspection, and reassembly of the transmission along with measurements and some description along the way. You'll find in this video, I also vacuum check the valve body to see if there are any worn bores. I go through the process of rebuilding the pulley assembly to give you an idea of what to expect.
This video is intended to teach a student or a technician that's new to CVT transmissions the overhaul and operation of this transmission. This is part of the SIU Automatic Transmissions Curriculum, which can be found at:
www.automotivetextbook.com/au...
Thank you Seal Aftermarket Products (sap.com) for providing me with some CVT kits, and thank you TransGo www.transgo.com for providing me with a flow control valve and a pulley puller tool. Look for another video where I cover the pump and the TransGo tool independently.

Great, thank you! One question: this wasn't shown in the video, but you obviously took this piece of welding wire (holding the ratio control valve link) out before putting the pan back on? And what happens if you miss this step, do not put anything in that hole? The linkage can fall apart when assembling? And what does it result in, car would not move, or just not shift? Because I have a strong suspicion that the shop which replaced the solenoids on my valve body forgot or didn't know about this step. Thank you!

Hi. Fantastically informative. Thank you. I am in Australia and we have a 2012 Suzuki Swift Sport with CVT. Car has had a young mother and our grand daughter, a novice (but very careful) female as owners of this car from new. Car has only 80K Kilometres on the clock. Within 12 months of our girl getting the car the CVT started slipping and got to the point where it is undriveable. We took it to the Suzuki dealer for diagnosis and quote and the only thing they would contemplate was replacement with a new transmission at a cost of a little over $9K AUD. They refused, or could not give details why the transmission had failed. The car is in beautiful condition but is not worth that much. Other transmission specialists were contacted and all reports were very negative. We were told that these transmission are "Throw away", cannot be repaired, and that the parts are not available anyway. So now we have a nice bright yellow monument sitting on the back lawn. I am an experienced mechanic and your video has given me the incentive to have a shot at repairing it myself. But if the parts I need are not available or prohibitively expensive, I would be wasting my time. Do you have any advice for me? Thank you. Gert Roewer, Jindera NSW Australia.
@siuautomotive
@siuautomotive 3 года назад
Thanks for watching the video. 5-7 years ago many shops had the same attitude about rebuilding cvts here in the states. Now many shops are rebuilding these because there are so many out there. I guess in your situation, you’d want to do research to see about parts availability. You might find out how much it would cost to have parts sent from the us to you. Slauson.com has a ton of good used belts and pulleys. The transgo drop in flow control valve is a good product and I’m sure it’s available through parts suppliers worldwide. When you pull it apart, the pulleys might look bad if the belt was slipping, but it’s likely build up and the material will probably clean up. I wrote an article for gearsmagazine.com for their January issue. You can read the magazine online and that issue includes a buyers guide. Download that mag and learn more about the cvt and check out some of the suppliers. You might find what you need!

@CM-ch5vc 3 года назад
@@gertroewer152 no mine hasn't failed, its shuddering on deceleration and sometimes won't up shift if revving around 3-4k rpm, i can also feel what seems to be a slight slip. I think the last person to service the transmission has used the wrong oil type(pink color) I have been sourcing service parts for it from the dealer, all coming from over east or Japan. This sort of explains why the CVT in this has a bad reputation, I think people don't service them or if they do, they dont use oem spec stuff as it's hard to source them locally, also pricey. From what I've gathered, it's very easy to damage with the wrong fluid and recommended is the expensive Suzuki green fluid. I did a drain and fill over the weekend with correct fluid but not much change. I intend on getting a full drain and fill as fluid is still coming up pink when new fluid is green. There is also an external filter which according to suzuki is not a serviceable item, wrong! I had a look at mine and that thing was is extremely dirty for a filter(100k km on car). I have called a number of wreckers around and this transmission is known for its scarcity and quick sell, so even when they have them, they sell them for close to 4k because of this. There's a specialist in NZ that reconditions them and sells them worldwide including Aus. He also supplies parts/guidance to guys that rebuild them here. He wants ~$3,400(2,800 + 600shipping) excluding GST.

Thank you for your content, I was wondering about the below: 1. what is the exact purpose of Neutral? Is it just for emergencies such as towing the car, or should we engage neutral at traffic lights etc? 2. Would it be harmful to the transmission to engage in sport mode while on the move i.e for overtaking or for driving uphill? 3. Finally, I was curious on the effects of start/stop systems on CVT's Thank you.

Wow, outstanding, thank you so much! When they say not to chnage the transmission oil in an older car (200k miles and older), if it was never changed previously, which parts could be impacted in a negative way by the fresh oil?
@siuautomotive
@siuautomotive 2 года назад
The main reason people say don’t change the oil on high mileage transmissions is because the new fluid has great detergents that will break loose varnish and gunk and potentially hang up some valves. Varnish doesn’t really build up in transmissions like they used to, so it really shouldn’t make a difference. If your fluid is really dark though, you might be taking a risk.

Hi! Thanks for making this greatly informative video! My 2012 Altima has zero codes, but is hesitant to engage (forward or reverse) until it's moved a bit. It's as if it needs to build pressure in something. Before I take it apart, I'd love to hear your ideas on this.
@siuautomotive
@siuautomotive 10 месяцев назад
Well, they are known for pump flow valves sticking. There's really not much that needs to happen to get these moving. There's just two clutches, and if it's happening in forward and reverse, it'd have to either be a pump issue or a drainback issue and you're waiting for the torque converter to refill. You could put a pressure gauge on the forward or reverse pressure tap to see how quick pressure builds.

How durable is the belt? Mine in Dodge Caliber 2.4L is currently at 220_000 km. Fluid changes every 30_000 km with full flushing and filter replacement. Still works super smooth and super quiet (as for CVT), never slips, never overheats. But I'm afraid a bit about sudden belt snap in most unconvenient situation. Are there any warning signs that the belt is going bad?

All happened after going through a car wash, when I left the "tunnel" the car started presenting the issue, I think that "belt" that moves the car inside damage something.

Very well elucidated video. A lot of Nissan dealers still refuse to rebuild these Jatco CVT’s.

Amazing Content! Does the same overhaul applies to model RE0F11A?

Some of it does, but I plan to make a video specifically on that trans because there are some differences.

I used to own a trans shop and your video is awesome. Have a 2008 Dodge Caliber 85K miles. Intermittent trans overheat, only after highway hill climbs. I guess this is an issue with a lot of the CVTs. I was just going to add a large aftermarket trans cooler in series and in front of the existing cooling. Trying to make the vehicle last until daughter is finished with college. Would you please give me your opinion?

There should be a bypass in the cooler lines. I would suggest also replacing that because it might always be bypassing the cooler. You might also verify the temp with a temp gun. I’ve heard of some faulty temp sensors misreporting the temp and putting them in overheat mode.

Good afternoon. I had a secondary rotor failure and changed the complete variator. After the replacement, the vehicle drove 100 miles without any problems, without jerks, it mostly worked great until the pump hummed and suddenly lost power. Now the vehicle runs normally and only suddenly loses power. Do you know what it could be and what to check. Thank you!!

Very informative vedio. I'm very impressed. I learned alot about these transmissions. I have a 2004 Saturn ion with a CVT transmission. Mines making a hum noise or roar. I rebuilt the whole supetion. But the car will shake bad sometimes. I'm thinking the trans is bad. I was wondering if your company has a rebuilt transmission. I love my car and want to keep it. If you have one how much would it cost to buy one from your company

Thanks, but we’re a school. That Saturn trans is a vt -25 and it’s notorious for failing. Most shops will only install a dealer reman unit so it’s covered under warranty.
