The Green Bay Packers used the #58 overall draft pick in the 2024 NFL draft on Georgia defensive back Javon Bullard, a versatile and aggressive safety who many people believed he was one of the 2 or 3 best safeties in the 2024 NFL draft class. Given the need at safety and in the slot, Javon Bullard has a terrific chance of contributing in a big way as a rookie in 2024. In fact, he’s likely a starter next to Xavier McKinney right away. The Packers said that they wanted their next starting safety to be “interchangeable”, meaning they could handle all the responsibilities asked of the position in Jeff Hafley’s 4-3 defense so the Packers can mix and match how they use the 2 starters, and especially prized free agent Xavier McKinney. Javon Bullard fits the bill maybe perfectly. As a starter in Georgia’s NFL-style defense, Javon Bullard played in the slot, as a split safety, deep as a single-high safety and even in the box. According to Pro Football Focus, Javon Bullard played 726 snaps in the slot, 408 as a deep safety and 169 in the box. Javon Bullard lined up primarily in the slot as a true sophomore for the National Champs but was used all over the defense in 2023. Javon Bullard was terrific in all roles. He was excellent in coverage from the slot in 2022 and excellent in coverage from a deep safety role in 2023, and he was a reliable tackler from both positions. I expect our Green Bay Packers to use Javon Bullard all over their defense. Javon Bullard is the likely starter next to Xavier McKinney, but I won’t be surprised if he’s playing down in the slot on plenty of snaps early on in his NFL career. Javon Bullard is 5-10 pounds, putting him on the smallest side of safety. But he doesn’t play small, and he’s one of the quickest players in the draft class. Javon Bullard had a 1.51-second 10-yard split and a 3.97-second finish in the short shuttle, highlighting his ability to get moving in a hurry and in short areas. His 4.47 second time in the 40-yard dash was still a 79 percentile finish among safeties. The athleticism shows up time and time again on tape; Javon Bullard can fly downhill, whether he’s playing the run, blitzing or attacking a ball-carrier in space, and the short-area quickness is evident when he’s transitioning in coverage. He’s a click-and-close defender. Javon Bullard might’ve entered the 2021 NFL draft after his true junior season, but he still got an invite to the Senior Bowl and then dominated down in mobile. Opponents voted Javon Bullard as the top safety on the American team. More and more, the Packers value those players who go to the Senior Bowl and take care of business. It’s clear Javon Bullard improved his stock by impressing as a 21-year old in mobile. The Green Bay Packers are confident that Javon Bullard can “run and hit” a common theme of the team’s 2024 draft class.
