Welcome to our first time watching Jaws (1975).
What a classic! Based on the Peter Benchley novel and written by him and Carl Gottlieb, starring Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, Robert Shaw and directed by Steven Spielberg.
We really enjoyed this and hope you enjoy our reactions, commentary and discussion as we watch it for the first time from two different generations (one of us a long time ago). We both found it scary, gruesome, great fun, full of suspense, excitement and masterful storytelling. It exceeded our expectations. Not bad for being made almost 50 years ago!

Thank you for joining this Reaction video. It's lovely reading everyone's memories when watching this film for the first time. This was one of my very first memories of film in general, I watched it as a family and i asked my mum to cover my eyes when Quint was eaten. Great times. Now we have here in this video another first time viewing! Please share in this thread below, where you were when you first watched this film....

I must say I'm a bit confused. Did you need to re upload the video? Because I definitely watched this reaction a few weeks ago. Just a bit like deja vu. But, anyway, I am very much enjoying these reactions and love the strong father - son bond. It's so incredibly refreshing to see that sort of thing. To answer the question, I first saw Jaws when I was around your son's age and it scared the bejeezus out of me!! 😂

"You're gonna need a bigger boat." Fun Fact: Director Steven Spielberg named the shark "Bruce" after his lawyer. What Script Fact: According to writer Carl Gottlieb, the line "You're gonna need a bigger boat." was not scripted, but was ad-libbed by Roy Scheider. Location Location Fact: Quint's (Robert Shaw) boathouse set was built in Martha's Vineyard on an abandoned lot. The city council made the production crew sign an agreement to demolish it after filming and replace everything exactly as it had been, right down to the litter. Writing Ensemble Fact: Quint's tale of the USS Indianapolis was conceived by playwright Howard Sackler, lengthened by screenwriter John Milius and rewritten by Robert Shaw following a disagreement between screenwriters Peter Benchley and Carl Gottlieb. Shaw presented his text, and Benchley and Gottlieb agreed that this was exactly what was needed. It's widely considered the best scene of the movie. The Rest Of The Story Fact: Several decades after the film's release, Lee Fierro (RIP), who played Mrs. Kintner, walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed "Alex Kintner Sandwich" on the menu. She commented that she had played his mother so many years ago; the owner of the restaurant ran out to meet her, and he was none other than Jeffrey Voorhees, who had played her son. They had not seen each other since the original movie shoot. I'm told Jeff still owns the restaurant at Martha's Vineyard and he loves talking to fans.

The fact that it can still scare the shit out of people 50 years later is a testament to the film's mastery. I'm not surprised he won't go in the ocean again.

There is a good example of foreshadowing in this movie: when Chief Brody is looking through books about sharks, researching the subject, while thumbing through the books, he comes across a photo of a giant shark with a compressed air tank from a diver in its mouth. Of course, this comes full circle at the end of the movie when Brody destroys the shark by shooting the compressed air tank in its jaws. I am always surprised that no one ever points that out; it seems like such an obvious oversight to me…

I have seen this movie a gazillion times & never caught that! I’ll notice now each time I watch it. 😁. In another scene I had never caught before, someone mentioned it in comments from another reactor was when Brody is typing shark attack if you look above it you will see he spelled Coroner’s Office as Corner’s Office. 🤣 now everytime I watch it I see Corner’s Office & smile at the misspelling.
@GenerationMediaReaction

I’ve always noticed that air tank in the shark’s mouth, that it was seeding a thought and possibility for later. Didn’t want to say anything to the boy though! This is why we specifically included that clip in the edit of this reaction

I am gonna go ahead and call it in advance...Ben Gardner's boat is gonna claim another jump scare victim. LOL OH, and I am gonna give many props to Dad here...for doing a MUCH better job of introducing his son to this movie than my Dad did. My Dad took me to see this on a blazing hot summer day in 1976, when I was barely 8 years old...because he wanted to sit in someplace that had air conditioning to get away from the heat. Even still...it is probably still one of my favorite Spielberg films, and the one that I have rewatched the 2nd most number times...my most rewatched is Saving Private Ryan.

It is common knowledge that the shark was an early animatronic device. but even so , the Brilliance of the way Spielberg filmed it one can easily overlook that maybe the shark isn't as fast of as agile as a real shark would be . But it holds up today under scrutiny very well I think. This movie has aged well , and is a scream classic . This type of Hollywood greatness no longer exists.

I remember distinctly my mom, relaxing on the beach with her nose in the paperback with that iconic cover, casually waving me toward the water where my swimming lessons were about to start. Every time I see a reaction to any other Spielberg film, Temple of Doom, Goonies etc. and the reactors say, "Oh Spielberg wouldn't XZY a kid!" I just shake my head. I grew up, and still live on the Atlantic shore of Brooklyn. On a good day I can hit the water with a rock from here. I can swim like a dolphin but rarely go deeper than my waist. I saw Jaws at the age of 3. To this day I am petrified of deep water and, as a kid, was also I was afraid of a shady end of the pool.

The guy at the beach party in the beginning was so pissed he passed out on the beach. As an American I used to hang out with some Brits that attended the high school that I went to from 1972 - 1975. So I did learn a lot of the ways they spoke and some of their slang. And during that time I did watch Monty Python's Flying Circus on the American tele. And also I watched The Avengers on the American tele during the 1960s. That was a very popular series here in America. Dame Diana Rigg who played the role of Mrs. Emma Peel was every American man's dream. Cheers!

I remember back in 1975 I was 13 years old, me and my friends went to see Jaws, everyone was sitting forward with suspense waiting for the next thing to happen and when the head rolled out there was a big bang of everyone slamming back into their seats. This is by far the best shark movie ever made. Back then the movie makers used suspense and flash surprise along with your own imagination to scare you instead of the CGI they use today. The 70's were full of horror movies such as The Exorcist (1973), and NO I do not recommend your son watching at least for a few more years.

I can't say with any accuracy how many times I have watched this series, or how many reaction videos I've seen, but if it's 75-100 isn't outlandish. I never get tired of this show. It is the focus of the men who fought it versus those who directed the men which they commanded. The portrayal is different because it places us in with them as if we are a member of Easy Company. That is the difference between the usual fair and the portrayal we have here told from the perspective of the participant's.

Apparently Spielberg had talks about directing the second film but the execs weren’t prepared to wait a year while he filmed Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Spielberg wanted to tell the story of Quint & the Indianapolis and how it made him obsessed with sharks. I also believe the “you’re going to need a bigger boat” line was improvised by Roy Scheider. He only agreed to make the second film to get out of his contract with Universal, and then shot the film Blue Thunder just so he was unavailable for the third film.

Remarkably, Quint’s speech about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis is a historical fact. It really happened! His vivid description of the tragedy that resulted is one of the most epic monologues in cinematic history, and is the key to his character and his obsession with killing sharks. He smashed the radio not only because he wanted to secure the bounty and reward for killing the Great White, which is strictly a secondary consideration for him, but rather because he wanted revenge - or perhaps personal redemption - for his horrific experience, which he can only achieve by killing the man-eating shark himself.

I was a biology student in the early 90s,I had a professor that once collaborated with the coast navy authority here in Chile. You'll see, the coast guards found a diver's body, with the head and one arm missing. According to my professor, the head and arm at the level of the complete shoulder were torn apart in one round bite, doing the math the shark that did it was around four meters long, maybe a bull or a great white. Contrary to the lore, this kind of sharks are cosmopolitan, but you find them more often in the "feeding grounds", but won't refuse a snack in transit. Fun reaction guys!

To get Chrissie's screams, they brought the actress in for a recording session and basically waterboarded her. Did you notice that Brody mis-spells 'CORONER'S' on her death certificate as 'CORNER'S?' The flotilla of local fishermen are actually being counter-productive by using dynamite. While explosions can stun or even kill nearby fish, causing them to float to the surface, it would drive away any shark outside of the blast radius. The Mayor isn't acting entirely out of greed or stupidity; in the book, it is revealed that he owes money to the Mob, who won't let him close the beaches. That doesn't excuse him, but it does deepen the understanding of his motives.

It stars Lawrence Fishburn, Ben Kingsley and several other known actors. It's a very entertaining movie that will make you laugh, Cry, and think.

Back in 1975 this was an awesome and forever memorable cinema experience for anyone seeing the movie for the first time. I was 12 and watched the movie with my dad.

This movie probably should have been rated R. I saw it when I was 9 years old and it was one of the first movies I saw on a big screen. It didn't keep me from going in the ocean as a teenager, but it definitely put me on the lookout for sharks when I was at the beach!

@@mildredpierce4506 it only occurred to me on this viewing. The fences looked like they have been deliberately used with the shots of the film and deliberately shaped by the art department in this way

@@GenerationMediaReaction Well, here's à trivia for you: In my country (France), the movie is titled "Les dents de la mer", which means "The teeth of the sea". The main reason is that translating the English title literally would have sounded dumb in French, and we prefer more "poetic" titles for movies, shall we say.

There is a shark who is probably hopefully still out there named Deep Blue. She is the biggest recorded Great White ; and would be ~20ft+ long now. She also would be pushing 60 past years old! So even if our movie shark were a faster grower he would still be like an older man age of 50-70.

P.S. The lad caught that Michael asked to go swimming. Most reactors miss that. Kid's pretty sharp. To my point, no, the Brody's didn't "just move to town", they've been there for nine months. "We bought the house in the fall. This is summer..." 10:42 Lad: "Kid, dead. Dog, dead." If this dude isn't a detective when he grows up, the city where he lives will be a lot worse off. And trust me, kid. Keep that hair long. You're gonna be a heartbreaker.19:25 You should see what they showed in the cinema, little man. You think the arm was bad? We had the torso and her face in a rictus of agony, just like it described in the book. For 40 years I can't get an explanation as to who or why that was cut. And why that idiotic non-sequitur was put in its place. And for the record, we asked "Was it Jack the Ripper?" at the same time. RHPS represent. 19:52 Don't feel bad, that shark was already dead, shipped up from Florida for an oft-delayed scene that ended with that thing stinking up the place for miles around. Fun fact: the mimic scene with little Sean was an ad-lib. He just started copying his co-star and they left it in. Pro tip: cutting jokes is bad. And don't bother yelping about the coyright. If that was really the case, all reactions would look alike, and they really, really don't. The guy who lost his leg is Teddy Grossman, and he was a prop guy on the movie. He was the one responsible for getting that smelly shark shipped from Florida. There's practically zero chance of killing a shark with a gun. They have a brain the size of a walnut and it's encased in cartilage. Not to mention, a shark dies from the tail forward, and it takes about 24 hours, so, you catch a shark tonight, he can still bite your *ss off tomorrow morning. 34:30 Way to tip him off, Dad. Congrats on not eviscerating the USS Indianapolis story. 42:30 Happens every time, innit? Somebody anthropomorphises the shark. Somehow, he becomes a sentient villain.45:35 In the book, Hooper died and the shark came up out of the water with his body hanging out of his mouth. The movie is much, much better than the book.It does happen occasionally. For the record, compressed air doesn't explode. It will shoot backward, however. This was great fun watching this with you guys! Nice job, Dad. Very well done introducing the boy to one of the classics.

Both the “Jaws” novel and the movie were inspired by a series of deadly shark attacks along the Jersey shore over a short period of time, resulting in multiple fatalities, all of which were caused by a single rogue bull shark. In short, incidents like those portrayed in Jaws do indeed take place in real life. Check the shark attack records for Florida, Australia, and California for more evidence.
