Jaws 2 is very underrated as a sequel. It's very watchable, nowhere near the classic original obviously and it has a bad ending, but it unfairly and lazily gets thrown in with the terrible third and fourth films. Roy Scheider's performance is at least as good as the original as well despite him not wanting to do the film.
@ThatGuyMattYT
@ThatGuyMattYT 3 месяца назад
@@mdrtoffee yeah, I've seen many people say Jaws 2 is awful. I don't agree, it's just an okay sequel. Scheider's performance holds the movie up and I do like some of the paranoia that comes with it. Where it begins to fall apart for me is when the last half focuses on the teens and as result, it sort of turns into a slasher-film. Which means we do get more shark attacks, but it loses some of the tension the first film had.
@JoelPerri7777
@JoelPerri7777 2 месяца назад
@@mdrtoffee I couldn’t agree more! It is also, at its core, a slasher movie, where a killer stalks ppl and kills them one at a time. Coming out months before Halloween, I’d say that’s significant and hardly ever gets brought up as an early slasher film. Comparing this to arguably the greatest movie ever made (jaws) it will always come up short, but your points are right on the money.

I recently had the idea of what if Jaws 2 was a psychological movie like they just play the paranoia straight the entire film and have it be ambiguous to whether there is another shark near amity or if Brody had given in to his ptsd. But that would lack blood i guess
@ThatGuyMattYT
@ThatGuyMattYT 2 месяца назад
It'd definitely be interesting! Though I still would've preferred the prequel with Quint on the Indianapolis. I'd have taken either honestly lol
@chandlerburse

@@ThatGuyMattYT they considered a prequel didn’t they? I guess universal didn’t believe in a film where Robert Shaw is drunk the majority of it while wearing makeup to look younger. Or a film relying on a replacement actor’s potential to mimic him or whatever.

I will say: Jaws 2 I like a lot. It is a slasher with a shark... Nothing more... But I like most slashers, so that doesn't bother me. Off course, compared to the masterpiece Jaws it falls flat on it's face... But I don't compare it with that. I really love the burned-face shark and it's death with the electricity. So yeah, I like this movie...

@@brent.b.productions2015 jaws 2 has always pretty much just been an okay sequel, not terrible, not great either. I've always said tho I do like the paranoia Brody has and for me that holds the movie up, despite it not going anywhere. The second half like you said is basically just a slasher movie with a shark at the forefront.

Jaws 2 could have blend in with jaws a little bit more..Like the part when they found the camera under water after the divers were gone,Chief Brody sounded like he wasn't familiar with the Orca boat..he should of had more depressed of a mood knowing what happened on that boat..I have some much to add but ill stop there for now!! 😅

Great vid, Matt! Oh boy that franchise went to crapper pretty fast. Universal seemly didn't care about any quality anymore after the second. They ran it into the ground. Only wanted to cash in. The original remains brilliant..2nd is a pretty fun, watchable sequel..sadly poor execution of Jaws 3 and 4. The shark in 3 and 4 doesn't look scary and more goofy, they showed it way too much and up close which shows how fake it is and moves. I do admit the opening death scene in 4 is pretty well done.. How do you compare the original franchise with the Italian jaws rip offs? 😆😀
@ThatGuyMattYT
@ThatGuyMattYT 2 месяца назад
Thank you for watching! Yeah, with the success of Jaws, I'd be surprised if they didn't make a sequel at some point. In reality, Jaws is a concept that can't really be expanded on all that much, similar to Jurassic Park. First one was great and posed a lot of interesting questions. The sequels just turned into schlock where all the characters do is run away from dinosaurs. They do have their audience, of course, but for me I'll always prefer the original Jaws and JP1. Don't even get me started with the ripoffs. 🤣 Thank you for watching!

Not referencing the novelization of Jaws 4 is a huge miss. If you thought the movie was stupid, the novel is even stupider. It goes into great detail about the voodoo shark curse powers that the shark is using to follow the Brodys. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's great that they tried to explain the stupid premise, but the explanation is somehow even stupider than the shark just following them around.
@ThatGuyMattYT
@ThatGuyMattYT 3 месяца назад
@@NozomuYume it's funny you mention that because a viewer told me the same and I was like well, it's still stupid, but at least there's reasons for why it's stupid lol. And if I'm being honest, I don't always like to mention books because I feel there shouldn't have to be a prerequisite to watching a movie. In the same way you can watch Lord of the Rings, you don't have to read the novels to understand what happens in the films. That said, I'm sure the novel must have been a fun read!

Hey Matt, I completely agree with your reviews of all the Jaws movies, except that for me, J4 was the worst of all with the absurd plot of the shark following the Brody family from the east coast to the Bahamas and Ellen having an unexplained psychic connection with the shark! Utterly ridiculous and terrible! 😂😂😂😂 At least J3 attempted to do something different and like yourself, Katherine Morgan was my favorite character who essentially supplied the oxygen for this boring-ass movie. Dennis Quaid is a wonderful actor but he was hooked on cocaine at the time and as a result, it hurts his performance. J2 was the best sequel but that's not saying much. I hated all the teenage characters, especially the character of Jackie who was screaming non-stop that there were times when I wanted to turn off the movie! It's essentially a retread of the first film. J1 is the best, hands down, in terms of acting, writing, directing, and production values. I too, watch the original at least once every year and each time it ages like fine wine and every time I watch it, I always see something new about it. The thing is, some premises have limitless potential but in the case of the Jaws franchise, it's premise is very limited. It is for this reason that I have only J1 and J2 on DVD and Deep Blue Sea, which I consider it to be a direct sequel to J2. In fact, the story of Deep Blue Sea about a group of scientists on board an aquatic research facility experimenting on sharks to find a cure for Alzheimer's should have been an official J3 sequel. Anyway, I look forward to seeing more of your movie reviews! You just earned a new subscriber and friend! 😎

Aww, thank you for subbing! Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, I totally get where you're coming from and don't disagree when you feel J4 is worse. In my eyes, it really just came down to the fact that J3 was a bore fest where as J4 is still terrible, but at least entertainingly bad. Bess was easily the best thing about Jaws 3 and I wouldn't have mind if she returned in some way. Also, Deep Blue Sea is another fun one! My grandad allowed us to watch it when we were visiting him a long time ago and it's been my brother's favorite shark movie since. He's even been asking for me to cover it at some point haha. But thank you for sharing and glad you liked my video! :D

@@ThatGuyMattYT My pleasure, Matt! 😃 By the way, in your review of J2, you mentioned about a deleted scene of Larry objecting to getting Martin fired from his job as chief of police and you found it contradicting of his behavior towards Martin, considering that he never backed him up. While I understand where you're coming from, I never got that impression because I thought it was his way of revealing to his colleagues that despite Martin botching up at the beach scene, the fact that he saved Amity in the first film and has integrity is what made him decide to oppose the town's vote on firing Martin. It proved that he still had a lot of respect for Martin despite them occasionally butting heads and as a result, my respect for Larry went up a tick, which was the same case in J1 when he realized his error in putting the town's best interest over the public. Only to lose it again in J2 that undoes his character arc in the original film! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 You're right about J3 being boring but you know what? I found J4 to be equally boring as well! 😆 Yes, DBS was great in it's own right but it is nowhere near the level of Jaws. Also, I have not seen DBS 2 and DBS 3 but I have read the extended synopsis for both and have no desire to see them. They are essentially a retread of the first movie. And now, I hear that Renny Harlin is developing a new DBS movie with a new premise. Time will tell if it lives up to his original movie. 🙏 And lastly, have you seen Open Waters? And if so, will you please consider doing a review on it?
@ThatGuyMattYT
@ThatGuyMattYT 2 месяца назад
@@julianschecter fair point on the mayor, it was just something that always bugged me. The mayor was never inherently evil, he was just trying to do what best for the town's interest. And tbf, I'd like to think the town will still thrive even without the beach, but idk. I've only seen the first DBS, from what I've heard the other two weren't that great. As for Open Water, I do recall seeing it and remember it being alright. I wouldn't be opposed to a review of it. I'm currently working on Cruel Jaws, Coraline, and Monster House, so my plate is full at the moment. But definitely at some point I'd consider it!

@@ThatGuyMattYT In the UK it was referred to in my town as 'the fish movie'. At the time, many cinemas were old converted theatres with an upper/lower circle (Amsterdam has a stunner- check out the Pathe Tuschinsky, the most beautiful art deco cinema ever). I saw Jaws in 1975 aged 11 with my parents. When old Ben Gardner pops up, the entire cinema jumped, popcorn became suddenly airborne. I recall seeing it rain over the edge of the upper circle onto people below...not something you'll ever see in todays oblong-box multiplexes!. I remember some went down the back of my T shirt from the seat behind. Man, I didn't like swimming in the sea for about two years after seeing this movie!.
