Absolutely. Most people say that Robert Shaw was the best actor in Jaws, but Roy Scheider's performance was much better - very natural and un-showy. Robert Shaw's manic (and drunk) performance is undeniably brillaint. Roy was the audience surrogate throughout Jaws, and too be honest he carried a lot of the film on his shoulders. Long live Martin Brody and Roy Scheider.
Not one word about Spielberg !!!! Man, old Hollywood still didn't see the light back in 1976. Guess they thought that "young guy" hadn't paid his dues yet. True that the 1941 debacle was yet to come for Spielberg and that would shake his confidence so badly that he had to associate himself with a post-STAR WARS triumphant George Lucas for the ultimate blockbuster : RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. "Phew, thank you for saving my career, George !"

That was one of three Oscars won by Jaws. The others were editing and score. Incidentally, to no one's surprise, Margaux died of a barbiturate overdose 20 years later at the age of 42. R.I.P.
John Carter was the one who held the nagra over his head as the Orca was sinking and as Steven Spielberg was calling all the actors off the boat he yelled out "Fuck the actors, save the sound department!"
so deserved, jaws should have been nominated for (and won) best art direction, cinematography, and director + it definitely should have won best picture. academy messed it up
@@trygve45 What caused far more delays were the giant sailboats on the horizon in the Summer time. The decision to only fully reveal the shark in the third act was in the script, it wasn't a result of it not working.
"Jaws" won all the Oscars it was up for except Best Picture. But it was up against Dog Day Afternoon, Nashville, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Barry Lyndon. Great year. The Academy nailed it.

Michael Dillon No in 2000 for the first DVD of Jaws they replaced the original mono track with a 5.1 surround track that remastered the music but replaced all the sound effects with updated ones. Fans who liked the original mix found this very disappointing especially cause the original wasnt included as an optional track on the DVD. Fortunately subsequent reissues of Jaws including the BluRay have included both mixes.

Nashville was produced in an amazing system called Lion's Gate 8-track sound and yet it wasn't even nominated. No doubt due to the movie's undeserved backlash
Scheider should have gotten an Academy award for standing next to her acting like she was okay. Poor, tragic Margeaux Hemingway. Got badly raped. Flipped out on drugs/booze/tragic family life. Not able to live up to expectations r/t her beauty and what her family name meant. She aced herself. Poor, pathetic creature. RIP.
