@Jeremy Horne Agreed. I wasn’t even alive in the 70’s but I’m a film buff and I think the 70’s were the best time for movies. I was born in 1980. It’s going to be weird when guys like Nicholson, DeNiro and Pacino all go. Jack was born in 37, Pacino in 40 and DeNiro in 43. So they’re all getting to that age.

Dreyfuss was a young actor and I'm convinced Shaw liked Dreyfuss so much, he created the off-screen tension on purpose to draw the "dislike" out of him, so when the camera rolled it was still there. He wound him up off screen and it worked a treat on screen. Shaw was a genius.

I agree. Because if you take note to what they are talking about with the little skirmishes, it is just like it was for the characters they played. It was like Shaw was setting both of themselves up for their roll so it was believable on screen. Which dragging Roy in, causing him to react similar as he did in the scenes. Shaw was epic. A trained stage actor who thought most american film actors were limited. He knew what he was doing with dreyfuss from the beginning.He forced dreyfuss to dig and actually work from character. An actor with a strong charisma coupled with a sensitivity for what creates character ( he really was a novelist) can tap in and translate that in a way forcing other actors to quit faking their performances.

Jaws gets better with age. Still cannot pull myself away from the movie for the epic quotes, quips, and put downs. His no nonsense intensity and believability brings a down right scary brilliance to every performance. You forget you are watching a cinematic, scripted film, with scenes, cuts and action. He's in films with Dreyfuss, Scheider, Gary, Matthau, Balsam, Redford and Newman yet who's performance is the most memorable...Robert Shaw!

As a matter of fact, I think being teased by Robert would have been a little fun. What the late Great Robert Shaw did either on his own, likely and/or at the request of Spielberg is an old yet effective filmmaking trick designed to create tension between characters. Here it worked masterfully, the tension between Quinn and Hooper was revealed immediately and makes perfect sense in context. The old man in the sea meets the new math. Quinn is envious of Hooper who didn't have to learn things the hard, old fashion way while technology made Quinn a relic which and infringed on his world. Who better to take that frustration out on the new prodigy who would replace him with the assistance of gadgets with ease. John Henry with he sludge hammer meets the rock busting steam drill machine. In the end the legend dies and the machine lives on but they actually both live on. The machine now documents and preserves the existence of the legend on a hard drive.

Always makes me laugh, cos although there was antagonism between the two actors you can tell a lot of it was based on banter and that they did respect each other

Greg Williams Whether it’s family friend or associate, being tolerant and friendly does not always mean respect. For a man like Shaw, I don’t think Dreyfus had his respect, if he would’ve toughened up against him, yes eventually, if he proved himself. but basically a person is going to respect someone similar to him, and with similar opinions.

That is why I don't relate to this prejudice and animosity toward what people label "method actors." Honestly, they do the best acting and get the best acting out of others, like it or not. As good as someone that proactively is against immersing yourself into a role, does a part. The ones we truly remember and are still powerful to watch, were those parts from the "hard to work with method actors."

I hope they never remake Jaws. You can’t replicate the chemistry with these three.
@Whoopdido777

@EricVierthaler92 Jaws would be impossible to remake. First of all, they basically did it already with “The Meg” and that was an atrocious movie. But, as others have said what makes Jaws a perfect film is the interaction between the cast. The remake would have a CGI shark and show way too much of it so the audience wouldn’t get to see the 3 guys interact with each other as much. And then who would play the 3 guys? Bradley Cooper as Chief Brody. Denzel Washington as Quint. And they’d probably make Hooper a woman so maybe Elizabeth Olsen as Hooper. Some movies are simply impossible to remake. Jaws is one of them.
@VierthalerStudios

Matt Anderson well said! They probably would make Hooper a girl just so they could be politically correct.
@Whoopdido777
@Whoopdido777 4 года назад
@@VierthalerStudios And to tell you the truth I actually wouldn’t even mind that cast. I love Denzel. You would probably need somebody older than Bradley Cooper though. And I don’t mind having a female Hooper. No big deal really. There was only 5 years difference in age between Scheider and Shaw. Denzel was born in 1954, making him 66, so need somebody around 60. Richard Dreyfus was born in 1947 which made him 20 years younger than Shaw. So Shaw was 48, Scheider was 43 and Dreyfus was 28. I have no idea what hacks in that age group today could pull off a remake.

Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side it was comin' back from the island of Tinian, just delivered the bomb. 1100 men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes. Didn't see the first shark for about a half an hour. Tiger, 13 footer. You know how you know that when you're in the water? You tell by lookin' from the dorsal to the tail. What we didn't know...was our bomb mission had been so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light the sharks come cruisin'. So we formed ourselves into tight groups and the idea was, the shark comes to the nearest man and that man, he'd start poundin' and hollerin' and screamin' and sometimes the shark would go away. Sometimes he wouldn't go away. Sometimes that shark, he looks right into you. Right into your eyes. You know the thing about a shark, he's got...lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eye. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'. Until he bites ya and those black eyes roll over white. And then, ah then you hear that terrible high pitch screamin' and the ocean turns red and spite of all the poundin' and the hollerin' they all come in and rip you to pieces. Y'know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men! I don't know how many sharks, maybe a thousand! I don't know how many men, they averaged six an hour. On Thursday mornin' I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland, baseball player. I thought he was asleep, reached over to wake him up. Bobbed up and down in the water, just like a kinda top. Up ended. He'd been bitten in half below the waist. Noon the fifth day a Lockheed Ventura saw us and come in low and 3 hours later a big fat PBY comes down and start to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened? Waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, 1100 went in the water, 316 men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945. Anyway....we delivered the bomb.

Shaw : only actor who (in FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE) looked like he could really kick Sean Connery's ass. And Connery was an ex-champion bodybuilder for crying out loud ! Imagine what Shaw must have thought in the presence of short, fat, nerdy, no-stage-experience and full-of-himself Richard Dreyfuss ;) Man, poor Dreyfuss didn't stand a chance ...
