Bilas has a point that "body of work" and "non conference schedule" overlap. Whenever you have automatic qualifiers, though, there's an inherent conflict. You're not getting the "best 68 teams" right now, but that's OK = every team has a chance. NC, even for experience for their younger players, should want to prove they should have been at the NCAA by going deep/winning the NIT.
its never going to be psrfect, and some teams feel slighted every year. Big 10 has 9 teams, Sec 8. How much more representation do they need? And for many this was a down yr for big 10, with only 2 top 20 teams. Another criteria should be last 10 games win %. Teams playing well down the stretch should be rewarded. Too many factors in "body of work." resume: injuries, coaching changes, transfers, etc
I was looking so forward to this and it didn't disappoint one smudge.... I absolutely agree with Bilas...I do wish, though, that they made scheduling arbitrary so the committee can't complain about non-conference schedules...instead of schools scheduling their own opponents.
Bilas is the smartest college basketball analyst ever. Apart from hoops history he can name players from Oral Roberts and their stats . . . off the top of his head. Holy (bleep).
NC State was not on probation in 1975. They were defending national champions & 7th ranked in the nation, but after being upset by North Carolina in the ACC tourney final, they were snubbed by the NCAA, as UNC (automatic qualifier) & Maryland were the only ACC teams invited to the 32 -team field. State was on probation in 1973 because incoming freshman David Thompson stayed for free in the dorm of some friends who were working a basketball camp. In addition, he played in a pick-up game w/ assistant coach Eddie Biedenbach, which the NCAA interpreted as a tryout, despite Thompson already signing w/ NC State. That 1973 Wolfpack team went 27-0, before going 30-1 the next year & winning the title. If it weren't for nitpicking by the NCAA, NC State could have very well won 3 consecutive national championships! It's strange that Jay Bilas, who played in the ACC for Duke a few years later, doesn't know this.
Yep, it's been in D2 for the past 25 years and it got corrected now D1 is following what D2 is doing. Which is stupid. Especially when D2s system for both Basketball and Football
Jay Bilas "knows more basketball than you do" according to Dan Patrick. Then I must be really stupid, because Jay Bilas picked Arizon to win the NCAA Tournament 5 seconds before they lost in the 1st round to an ivy leage school with zero athletic scholarships.
