Honestly, to me this felt like they started out trying to make a joint collab, “Watch The Throne” type of album, and at the last minute they decided to call it his “debut” album. I think Jay(Z) wanted Elec. to get the credit & the royalties for it, cause he’s in a space of trying to empower artists he respects. I think if they would’ve called it a “collab” album, people wouldn’t be so critical...

In music I guess there is some crossover with the underground or conscious rap but basically Jay Elec is on a different level with the samples, flow & meaning. Art House cinema would be the difference between watching Sin City and Avengers: EndGame - as a quick off the top example. He did have bars and bangers IMO but again that is all down to taste. On this album there are examples of that, but I would agree it is far from his best and he has shown far more potential in the past. Exhibit C and Eternal Sunshine... for instance. Amoung numerous other tracks, if collated, would have made for a better album. RE the waiting time it was a let down, but I'm grateful he put something out. Jay Elec is a top 5 rapper to me. For sure.

(im abbreviating his name because im tired to typing it) just didnt tap into that Exhibit C primal ability we saw back then

Elec rarely ever made a guest appearance or even a song (compared to snoop) before then, so when the first verse we hear from YOUR debut is Hov, it hits a little different

If Dr Dre finally came out with Detox and had Snoop on the intro and 90% of the tracks, then it would be similar to this case. Also, the overall cohesiveness of the album was clearly lacking. While we can speak on objectivity or lack thereof in many cases, this is not one of those cases. As veterans of the game, both Jay Electronica and Jay-Z should know that just because you can rap on a beat, doesnt mean you should. That's what sets apart the essence and craft of being an MC versus just being a rapper. Plus, let's clear the elephant in the room. The mainstream has this false ideal that if you're lyrical, then your production has to be minimalistic in nature or if your production is avant-garde, then you have to go with a pop approach lyrically (call and response,jingle type hooks,etc.) Artisty is mainly defined by finding the balance of elements between good songwriting, good production,good energy,replay value, artistry and cultural relativity/relatability. Quite frankly, Joe Budden said it best...Jay Electronica got smacked around on his own debut album. That alone is a glaring confirmation of the disappointment this album is on a sonic level and more. With that being said, no one is saying Jay Electronica is wack or Jay-Z is wack. Joe breaks down the obvious flaws of this entire project. Just because someone doesnt articulate their perspective in the way that you do or agree with,doesnt mean they are ignorant. Slow your roll and humble yourself. It's the internet lol💯

@@dubk617beats i agree with things you stated and that Joe stated. Valid points on both sides. I have calmed down now and listened to what Joe had to say again today, i feel a lot of his energy isn't about the points he made but more so about the fact he has been compared to jay elect a lot and he feels elect hadn't proven any of the hype he gets and did in essence use a cheat sheet without having any real music. So he refuses to actually even acknowledge the art or what elect was even saying and wants to hammer down on everything that is wrong with it. I'm over it now. Joe is my mans but i wish he had actually compartmentalize his grievances and his critique and shared it all separately which would have made more sense than to come off as just hating
