I honestly thought that Perdita Weeks was British originally. Magnum P.I. is my all time favorite show ever!!!!! Both the original show and the remake are AMAZING!!
I frequently get annoyed by strong female leads for some reason, but I love her in this role. She is believable as her character where sometimes female characters seem forced.
I love the new Magnum and considering it has been rebooted by the same guy (Peter Lenkov) who did the Hawaii Five-0 and MacGyver reboots, I think the show is in good hands
I love this show. It has everything. Romance, adventure, action comedy. Please renew for season 5!!! It would be a tragic mistake not to give fans a season 5
I was honestly surprised the new version is really good. I dd not think it would be, but it has it's own spin while still having some touches of the original. I know some people will not like it because they were fans of the original show. That is understandable.
I actually LIKE this reboot. Jay Hernandez is very cool as the new Magnum and I thought it was Genius to have a kick-ass ex MI6 operative female play Higgins' role.
I agree. After watching a few episodes I don't even compare it to the old Magnum anymore. I watch the show as something new and I have to say it is pretty entertaining.

Who wouldn't want to be a young suave debonair ex Navy Seal residing at a wealthy eccentric (and never seen mysterious) millionaire's home on a secluded beach estate in Hawaii pretending to be a detective/private security specialist with a really cool friend who owns a helicopter and drive around town in a (dated but cool) Red Ferrari solving run-of-the-mill capers and getting paid to do it (on and off camera)? I want that gig!
@@KnowTrentTimoy Stop. Who paid you to post this nonsense? Tom Selleck is an absolute legend, and no role is more responsible for that legend than Thomas Magnum. The new show being different is fine, but it simply is all gloss and no grounding. The chemistry isn't there in the cast. Jay Hernandez is woefully mis- cast. He doesn't have the physical stature, nor the gravitas to be believable in the role. Making Higgins a female is nothing more than social justice stunt-casting because it introduces the possiblity (probability) for sexual tension between Higgins and Magnum which is an element that can only be detrimental to the dynamic, and the story.
burnt toast: Legend? Really? Who told you that? Your mom? I wasn't purposely trying to dismiss your obsession I was merely taking the reboot into the 21st century. The show is a retooled "fresh take" so, naturally, the lead will garner unwarranted criticism because of an established formula. The same kind of uncritical thinking was launched at Patrick Stewart when he took the helm of the Enterprise as Captain Jean-Luc Picard. He didn't necessarily have the physical stature or the gravitas of an action hero but guess what? He worked it with his superb Shakespearean magic and became a legend. As I mentioned before, casting a female as the Higgins' role was pure GENIUS. The accent is still there with a female persuasion. Why do you assume that there NEEDS to be any sexual tension between the new Magnum and Higgins? It's purely fun flirtation and nothing more. Who told you that they have to "eventually have sex"? Nothing of the sort needs to occur. This show is nothing but escapism. It's meant to be fun. You Don't have to watch it.
All he has to do is say he's a fan of the original, and that's good enough to satisfy you? Of course he's going to say that. They're told to say that. CBS isn't going to risk alienating original fans any further with the negative PR of a current cast member saying "You know, I never really liked the original show".

I watched the original as a kid, as an adult I watched every episode of the original (have a copy of every episode of the original), I was a Naval Officer stationed in HI, and I have lived in Hawaii for the past 23 years. I watched the first two (2) episodes and really could care less about this series. Not because it is a “re-boot” but because why can’t they come up with something original. I'll watch it only because like most people in HI who watch shows based here, we watch it to figure out where the locations are and kind of get a chuckle out of how they drive from one side of the island to the other in only 5 minutes, etc... This looks like it is going to be a TV version of Fast & Furious. The nice thing about the original is it may have seemed to be all glitzy from the premise but it was not. It was recognized as the first TV show to deal with Vietnam vets coming back home, or not, and them dealing with PTSD (not just the main characters but other characters who came and went on the show). It dealt with other historical events in the past 50 years like the small wars in Africa Higgins was involved in and atrocities. It dealt with the moral issues of the cold war and how people can get just churned up by governments. It was a slower paced show than this one appears to be and more in depth than the re-boot. Yes, there were car chases in the old but not the ridiculous jumping from a car going over a cliff, onto a truck to grab a helo skid. He “jumped the shark” in the first episode. It really comes down to what I said earlier, TV (Hollywood) has no original shows. The reason 18 years ago I got rid of my TV and was on the first bow wave of watching stuff online. In ref. to a comment about white people not liking a show because the lead is not white is a really stupid thing to say.
I just moved to Hawaii .. love watching the show for locations. I was at a Hawaii 5.0 shoot a couple weeks ago .. pretty cool! Do you remember the show Raven from the early 90s ? It was set here .. really good show still.
On the question has anyone from the original show shown up on new Magnum. Well, I think the original Rick and TC have shown up, however playing different characters. Tom has not been on, but he is still a busy man doing shows.
Tom Selleck should make a guest appearance as his dad! Too bad John Hillerman passed as he could be on the same episode as her dad! Then it would be funny to either have them not get along or maybe funnier if they became the best of buddies?!
I saw Perdita Weeks as a little girl in "The Rag Nymph" where she played the main character as a child. Then as a grown-up, her big sister, Honeysuckle Weeks, took over the role. It was uncanny how look alike they were. Honeysuckle Weeks was the driver, Sam, in the wonderful WW2 PBS drama, Foyle's War.
WHEN IS MAGNUM GOING TO KISS HIGGINS,even if it's part of pretend to be my wife scene,while on a case.but the bad guy's are not really convinced ,and they,like us want to see some action,.......

Isn't he going to have to play a half-Mexican/half-white guy, considering, Magnum is not a Spanish surname? Will his name be Thomas Magnum, or Tomas Magnum? I keep thinking how great it would be if Tom Selleck played his Dad or Uncle. I also want to see the rest of the original cast make occasional appearances.
I always believed that the idea of Thomas Magnum was beyond race, nor was he badass. He used force sparingly and usually reluctantly, but like most of us, made mistakes there as well. I hope this new model tries to do the same. Our current society may not allow it, however. That would be too bad. I think we need it, right now. I mentioned elsewhere that the first episode relief a lot ACTION. If that continues, as I fear it will, I won't be watching for long. I hope to be wrong.
>^..^< Actually I like BOTH shows equally as well in many ways and am 1o1% happy with the new MPI much more than I expected..... And a'm I haole boy, born n raised Oahu but now live in the rural mainland since my father retired from his 22 years in the navy/15 of them stationed at Pearl. So this fact often confuses me emotionaly about modern Hawaii since the Hawaii I grew up in during the mid 1950s NO LONGER EXISTS................... Than there is Ms Weeks (Perdita-Perdi), vary gorgeous sexy lady and a great actress. Also my late wife of just 78 day less than 20 years was Latina/Colombiana when cancer took her from me but my late wife has given me much respect and acceptance for Mr Hernandez toooooo having almost been married into a Spanish family 20 great years........
This interview is really painful. The show has grown on me, but good lord people. If you don't want to interview, or if the guy can't interview, just flippin' give up and stop. Son't post it!
They ahve to do interviews, it is part of their conracts to do some press. Of course it is hard to come up with answer without spoiling anything or off the top of your had.
Jay is handsome and charming.... if anyone can do it (and I'm not sure anyone should - Tom *IS* Magnum), maybe Jay can (?). Hard to know. I'm actually at least as concerned that it will be overly Fast-and-Furious-y. But it looks like it could be fun, heresy and all :)
I really like the reboot although to me the most glaring differences between it and the original are that Thomas doesn't have a mustache and before I didn't want to ashammer Higgins!
I watched the first episode. This is not Magnum, P.I. or Magnum PI, if you want.. She"s way cute, but she's not Higgins. He seems likeable, but he's not Thomas Magnum. Too much emphasis on ACTION. I liked that they sort of followed the storyline of the first episode of the original, but....it's just not Magnum, ya' know? I look forward to any comments....
You right, he is the new Magnum, century 21, That's US today, the thing is , this is the only new show that have flavor good flavor, mc giver last 3 weeks, Charmd I don t like it, Hawai 5 0 hmmm.... I thing is a nice combination of this cast, I hope last long, I have to admite She is the reason I watch this new show, and the guys are not bad. I am 55 ....
No. Just no! If someone would throw a hamster in the air and tell me that it is a bird because it flies trough the air. I would say wait a bit and one will see a horrid landing. That is this show. Best look away.
What audience is this 'remake' aimed at? NOT fans of the original! I could barely watch, this is just a new show on the lineup with NOTHING in common with the Tom Selleck/John Hillerman classic,,, stupid shallow idiotic in every way,,, I was stationed at Pearl Harbor in the Navy during the 80s and I spent time on the beaches where Magnum was filmed, the show had so much meaning and strength of heart,, this new entry reflects the emptiness plaguing the current generation,, no substance,,,,
The show is cheesy and poorly written. The computer effects only make it less appealing. Sorry, this is even worse than the Hawaii 5-0 reboot. Kill it already!! The cast sucks as well.
So Jay tell me how it feels for you and the new crew to ride off the shirt tales of success of the original cast and their hard work and talent? I understand that their is no creative talent in Hollywood no more which leads to all these bland ass reboots of past great shows instead of creating new shows and ideas.
So maybe this generation will watch this offshoot, reboot, uncharacteristic, parody of an original classic t.v. show and like it. Me, I don't think so. Only one thing could have me enjoying this show would be a whole recasting, sticking with the characters as previously known to be and rebuilding the original Robin's Nest. Hey, just my opinion. Hope it works out for the small percent that likes it. Probably get dropped for lack of story and no substance. That's S.J.W.'s for you.
