Jay Shafer and his original tiny house designs helped propel the modern tiny house movement forward and were personally a huge inspiration for us. When we first visited him in 2016, he was living in his beautiful craftsman style 119 sq. ft. tiny house (under $25k). Fast forward to present day, he’s now living in 51 sq. ft. and under $4,000. His enduring legacy is that simple, high-quality living is accessible by all. Thanks for the inspiration, Jay!
I’ve come back to this video many times since it was posted. I love Jay’s latest tiny house, I love his personality and his philosophy. I could listen to him talk all day. Several times I have wished I could get in touch with him to ask him to build me basically the same house he is in now. There is always a sense of peace in his designs.
Dude Jay isn't the pioneer of the tiny house movement. He's the FATHER of the tiny house movement. If it weren't for him we wouldn't have tiny houses today. #JAY_SHAFFER_ROCKS
I'm retired and in my late 60's. For the past 5 years I've been living in a tiny house built by Jay. In 2005, the home traveled from Sebastopol, CA to Louisiana. A young couple bought it there and took it to live in upper state New York. They later brought it to Sebastopol where they sold it to me. I'm in love with it.
Jay, love the candle heater! Heating a small space should be affordable. Would like to see more details on your venting. Also, your floor plan with no kitchen or bathroom is really interesting. Many people living in vans use the same ideas. I dig it! Once again your kind heart, quirky humor and strength come through on this video! You are an inspiration to us all! Keep on keeping on my brother!
HaPpY THANKSGIVING, love the secret pegboard, and the tiny bookcase gives added bulk and purpose to the hall. Love the Japanese soaker and the front door and craftsman front ♡
For me, the homes that Mr. Shafer designs and builds have always had that indefinable air, sense, quality and soul which makes them very special indeed! To have designed and built this sized home is in itself masterful, but to have done so in such an utterly practical yet so beautifully perfect way is something so very special, and could have only come from the eye, mind, heart, soul and hands of Mr. Shafer.
I shared this with the Positive Deep Adaptation facebook group because it can also be applied to dealing with climate change and extreme weather events, etc. Thanks for making this!
I love the soaking tub! Great style overall. If the sleeping loft had dormers, it would be perfect. I like the bookcases, too. The micro tiny is nice, but a toilet/shower is essential if one were to live in it even for weekend trips. But the communal bathouse/kitchen would work for a fixed community.
Like a lot of other folks we came slowly into raising and growing our own food, we moved Off Grid last spring. We are building two small cabins and a small kitchen. Living with less is more satisfying. I love your design elements, it’s all done in good taste and I can tell you put a lot of heat into it. Thanks for sharing.
@Courtney Saunders I'm really coming to you with love & mean absolutely zero disrespect sweetheart. Having said that, none of us know if he's cut out for marriage or not. If he's for marriage, then obviously it's all about finding the right partner. That's it. Some of us can find that perfect partner early on in life while some of us have to weed through so many bad apples to find our perfect person. I believe he will someday. ❤
An amazing person! He's widely recognized as the pioneer or godfather of the tiny house movement. After building his first tiny house on wheels in 1999, he helped launch the Small House Society and then started the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company.
@@TinyHouseExpedition I remember him saying something along the lines as he didn't have much money. Well, if he started these amazing companies, then he definitely has some very well earned money now! And he is VERY deserving of it! What a lovely soul & heart this man has! He's just brilliant! Love him! ❤
You're right about Spur. :) Now many THOW dwellers like the wheels becomes of the flexibility they provide to move as the need arises, like for a new job.
I wonder if the houses getting smaller represents the people in his life lessening in size. The last tiny house had a social space and he even said sometimes he needed to bring in the chair from outside. Now he says he has the extra bed available but he’s not using it. He seems markedly more sad in the second house.
There are! Gracious RV & Tiny House Park in Okeechobee, and Circle Pond Tiny Community in Ruskin. You can find them and others here: searchtinyhousevillages.com
Design has come along way since then..but Jay's design still holds up very well. . How much is that house today? Tiny houses have become too exoensive and defeat the original purpose nowadays.
That is very cool. Pretty much all I would need. Though I would definitely need a ground floor bedroom, since I'm older and not interested in going up ladders or stairs constantly to get to my sleeping area.
Do we have this kind of housing in Seattle or in the outskirts? If yes, then where? and if not, Why the hell not? Tiny Home communities are a must with the everincresing greedy rents here in the city of Seattle and the surrounding communities. THIS IS WHY EVERYONE IS SO MISERABLE!! When you have to constantly struggle to survive and barely scrape by day in and day out its bound to take a toll on the people. It has become so difficult to afford to live for the average wage earner and it is bordering on criminal and highly discriminatory based on financial status. I am not a drug addict and I am not a criminal. Just a pretty awesome middle aged woman trying to get by and yes, I work, if you're wondering. I actually work my ass off. I do not do credit cards, if I did I might be able to stay afloat like I know many of you do. Most of us are one paycheck away from disaster, those who use credit cards may "look" like they have their shit together but we all know things are sometimes not as they appear. You too are looming on the edge of financial colapse and homelessness. Two weeks ago, I had to abandon my 1 bedroom apartment in Lynnwood because I couldn't afford to continue paying $1550 per month. Many months I payed well over that amount in late fees. Basically I was choked out of my apartment. I was unable to scrape together the monies to find another place more affordable so I was out of options. Technically I was evicted for Non payment of rent so now I am the "loser" who has an eviction on her record and no one will want to rent to me now. So, now I am living in a hotel with my 20 year old son. I am not looking for sympathy so please don't. I have been humbled and now I am looking for solutions so, please do not send me messages of pity. I will delete and block your friendship for good. And if you must judge me and think in your head "what a loser she must be" then go right ahead and judge me Oh and for those who are thinking "why is she putting her personal business on here" I have one finger for you and its my middle one. You can kiss my ass. Im looking for solutions not your judgement or your opinions on my character! You try to kick me when Im down and I will tear you up. Not playing. Oh and just so you know, I can read minds so be careful. You dont need to say a word. i will know. My son will be getting his own apartment soon at an affordable housing community where he will pay $1050 for a rocking one bedroom apartment in the same city! I will pay whatever I have to pay to get him on his feet. I may die in the process but it will be worth it to get him going. It's much newer and much nicer then where we lived formerly where I payed $1550 for the same square footage. I am prohibited from living with him because I am a loser. I am now considered not good enough to live in an affordable housing community because of my eviction. These rules and screening criteria need a serious overhaul. To flat out deny a person who has an eviction on their record for Non payment of Rent are set by the Government, so in my eyes it's the government who is causing this homelessness issue by allowing rents to run out of control and then blocking someone who hasn't been able to afford the outrageous rents from living somewhere they can afford. The desperegy in what the Government calls "affordable housing" and what typical rental rates are for the rest of the folks living in typical apartment communities across the nation is outrageous and should be looked at and something needs to be done. It is greed that is driving this industry just like any industry that goes unchecked and that is criminal! The Government is supposed to protect us from this. They are in our business on everything else why are they not doing their job on this topic? Huh? If I had the financial backing, I would build my own very affordable tiny housing community much like the one you see here in this video. We need real change #america the not so great in my opinion, right now AND #seattle #lynnwood #housingmarket #greed is out of control I mean come on! Do you fat cats really need $1550 for a 1 bedroom box?
It's accessable for all only if you have$ to buy property to sit on! If you want to drive around you need$ for a big truck and rental for stop overs! I wish it was as easy as it sounds, but when I got interested I still had money and could work! I've lost everything sadly
He's majorly depressed. Hope he feels better soon. Another innovative great design. He's truly a Minamilist and practices what he preaches. What a lovely clever guy.
May 202Fans, you might try to get everyone involved with turning the HUUUGE! parking lot (save the buildings for Planet Fitness, etc.) of the closed Macy's, everything, at the Richmond (across from San Francisco GG Bridge, Richmond-San Rafael Bridge) view of the Bay and Mt. Tamalpais....Try to form a non profit (talk to nurse Meg Busses 'Camp You Can' on how to do this) to try to copy this at hundreds of closed shopping centers all over the USA. G'Day
Hello, Thanks so much for your videos. Do you all happen to have an update on Jay? I tried going to the website you all linked on RU-vid and some other page comes up when I click it. I would love to get into contact with him.
