Mainly I concentrate on music listened to in Sweden during the 78 rpm epoch. Victory record (on of Crystalites labels, in Sweden Kristall & Imperial) was as far I know never sold in my country. However I decide to upload this nice recording by two reasons. One, therefore Jay Whidden did some recordings for the Swedish market (for Swedish Imperial with his Carlton orchestra, some English recordings was also available for Swedish buyers at German Kristall sold in Sweden ), he was a popular artist for Swedish disc byers and second, that I think there is not so many uploads with his pleasant orchestra. Here is an example with his formation, The music masters, in Noël Cowards; A room with a view. Whidden is doing the vocal himself.
Jay Whidden (Ca 1890-1968) was an originally American orchestra leader who did his success in Great Britain during the twenties, an interesting biography is able to read at ; www.jabw.demon....
Also some words about this little sympathetic label. Victory is a 6' record with playtime around 2.30, and was edited in GB from 1928-1931, when it was replaced by Eclipse 7'. It was a low price disc and and only costed 6 p. (The price for 78rpm in Sweden was normally 4 SEK ≈ 0,40 GBP, it's a bit problematic to give exact compares since the develop of our values are different) The catalogue numbers ran from 1 until 318. This is number 4 so I suppose it's recorded in autumn 1928. (information from the excellent website of Michael Thomas, where a lot of information of British dance bands are to find, and also some very good mp3 (including some Whidden) , have yourself a look ;
