Gene's drumming with Death was always about being tasteful and mixing groove with power, something that a lot of "tech" bands seem to lack these days. One of the reasons why an album that's a quarter century old sounds as great today as it did then.

Gene’s one of the old guard and still a legend. Also, he’s left handed so that’s where the left hand hand mutes, leading with the left foot, etc all come from. He got the nickname Atomic Clock since he could keep consistent tempos at high speed before a bunch of modern metal drummers caught up with him. Anyway, check out his work with Strapping Young Lad / Devin Townsend, or the Mechanize album from Fear Factory if you’d like a better showcase of his abilities at higher speeds. Gene Hoglan Fun Fact: On Individual Thought Patterns he was credited with drums and "propeller". At the time I didn't understand this, and thought this was just a joke about his double bass speed. 3:47 "Is this death metal?" Not only is this death metal, this is OG death metal. Besides Possessed's Seven Churches (which coined the term "death metal"), Death's first album is considered the genre's pioneering album. This track is from their 5th album, Individual Thought Patterns, after they'd evolved into progressive death metal. It's amazing to think that the same band (really the same guy, Chuck Schuldiner) pioneered two different metal genres. Anyway, Hoglan is definitely one of my favorite metal drummers; you should definitely check out his work with Testament and Strapping Young Lad too.

@eschaton7813
@eschaton7813 4 года назад
Possessed didn't coin the term. There was a compilation with Running Wild, Helloween, Hellhammer, and Dark Avenger that came out well over a year before Seven Churches. Death's first album is an important first album in the genre, but not one single album created the genre; it was a multitude of bands "pioneering" the genre. We might as well say Venom was Black Metal because of the album/song name -- but they aren't.

Death was quite a special "band" or basically Chuck Schuldiner playing musical chairs with a pool of really good musicians who are incredibly influential and who are very much well acquainted with jazz music. Probably metal drummers are much more into jazz than jazz drummers into metal, or at least that's my perception. It wasn't only Death. It was also all the related bands and projects. Sadus, Cynic, Atheist, Gordian Knot, Control Denied. They might not be so well known, but they are quite groundbreaking, especially in terms of bringing metal and jazz closer together.

Other Gene Hoglan excellence: His pioneering thrash metal drumming in Dark Angel ( oh yeah, he wrote not only drum parts, bur most of the music on ALL of the other instruments, AND played almost ALL the other instruments on the recorded tracks on the albums). Gene was playing so many beats, patterns, fills, polyrhythms, and novel instruments for new sounds, before many drummers playing metal today were out of diapers, before some were born. Many things that are common in tech and prog metal today didn't exist before Gene Hoglan brought them to metal for public consumption. Up until recently he not only wore boots, he would play warm ups, and the first five or six songs WITH ANKLE WEIGHTS ON! Try it sometime, play his stuff in boots and ankle weights. Dethclock, a TV show about a death metal band that is... hilarious. But cool metal. His videos and instructional recordings, where he talks about the fact that when he is not playing or practicing with one of the metal bands he is in, most of the music he plays is Funk, and he is by the way, it's a fantastic Funk drummer. He is currently in a band called Testament. Testament is one of the original thrash metal bands from the Bay Area that helped found and pioneer the earliest days of thrash metal. They were more progressive than most of the other thrash bands of the time, and they have always retained that ability to bring other influences, especially jazz and some classical, into their music. Testament's last two albums, which have featured Gene Hoglan on drums, have been in my opinion their best albums of their career.

Understand that the founder of this band, Chuck Schuldiner, passed away nearly 20 years ago. This band helped found the genre of Death Metal, but by the third album they were moving away from Death Metal and more towards a progressive metal sound, which also had not yet really been created. More importantly, understand that Gene Hogan created this drum part for this song in the early 90s when it was recorded. In the early 90s nobody was doing what this band was doing and I had not heard any drummer doing what Gene Hoglan was doing at this time. It seems like solid metal drumming now, but at the time it was written it was completely Innovative relative to everything else that was going on in the metal world at that time. And, at the time this was written and recorded much of the music world was wearing flannel shirts, and playing Ultra simple grunge tunes

Nah dude. Death wasnt really moving away from death metal until the last album. Everything else was was still firmly death metal but incorporating new elements with each album. Also cynic and atheist were doing similar stuff around the same time

Legend has it during his days in Death Angel, he wore leg weights to ensure he was properly warmed up for the 1st half of the set. Apparently, so I'm told, he used "alternative" items on his kit, such as a hovercraft fan blade and an artillery shell casing.
