I grew up hearing the legends of Nick Pierce. We had a lot of mutual friends because he went to the high school down the road from the one I went to. Then years later he's playing drums for one of my favorite bands from when I was in high school. Kinda crazy.
If you'd like to see more stuff like that, might I recommend you watch Bruno Valverde? He's Angra's drummer who plays with traditional grip. Very powerful technique.
I went to see unearth back in 2002 the drummer then was pretty badass too I remember him doing a crazy drum solo then jumping off a 6ft speaker back to his drum throne for an encore haha my buddy lost one of his shoes in the pit that night 🤘
I saw him play in a tiny tiny venue shortly after started playing with Unearth. Asked him why he chose to play traditional grip playing the music he does... his answer “I’m old, I’ve always played this way” then something along the lines of “drum corps something or other”
The Ocean - Jurassic | Cretaceous drum playthrough please. I know its a pretty long video, but that guy is a beast, and the band is one of the best prog metal band out there
Hey Garret! You MUST WATCH these other Nick Pierce videos: 'Metal Improv Warmup' his 'Aeon Symmetry' videos and one called "Put On Your Party Shirt". YOU WON'T REGRET IT! 🤘
I went to a Todd Sucherman drum clinic last year and it was nuts. I always knew he was an amazing player but it becomes so much more apparent sitting 20 feet away while he destroys a drum kit for 45 minutes straight.
Good reaction! Glad to see you still rocking it man! May you be blessed with 1 million subscribers by 2021!!!! Love your stuff, and i hate the "normal" reaction videos. They really bother me, but you somehow keep me watching and loving it!!!
On the Colaiutta bit, theres plenty of footage of a young Vinnie with Zappa playing match, so I'm sure as sick as it would be he probably played match for Megadeth...
One of my favorite channels and your commentary is the best! I also find sooooo many new great drummers here that I don’t think I would had found otherwise!! Thanks a ton for these videos!
Nick Pierce deserves another look. That video didn’t do him justice. He has a channel full of high quality videos to pick from. Maybe go all the way back to his demo for The Faceless...
Thanks for the video, Garrett! You're an awesome guy making some awesome videos! They are super chill and you even get to talk a little about drums 'n' stuff ;^) Love it!
Love the reactions! One drummer in particular that I am always hoping to see on your uploads is "Kevin Paradis." Dude has quickly become probably my favorite death metal drummer. He has a plethora of quality drum videos but I would recommend his playthrough of the songs "Brutus," "Martyr," or "Muzzle." Hope you see this comment! Keep doing what you're doing!
Lets all just be honest here, We all need Garret to see Demolisher drum-playthrough by Slaughter to Prevail. It just has to happen. I mean the guy play with his sticks upsidedown, hes a total monster. Evgeny Novikov
I saw him Unearth back in Sept or Oct at the Providence metal fest and I did notice the grip right away. I have seen hundreds of live metal shows and I like to watch the drummers more than anything, especially with extreme metal. Mr Pierce is the only metal drummer I have ever seen holding the sticks that way. I, too, wish the sound was better. You did a great job not allowing that discrepancy to ruin this video. I would have let it bother me to much.
You have to check out Brian Lada, he's the drummer for the band Belmont. I know you normally get heavier suggestions for your channel, but this dude is great. Like, really really impressive.
You Must watch the drummer of Imperial Triumphant play Cosmopolis. It's New York based avant garde jazz/black metal and he switches between traditional and matched grip
there is a band from B0st0n Ma. called "Diecast" their drummer plays "traditional grip" and he has feet 0f fury, c0nsistant and d0minating they have a cd called "und0 the wicked." l00k f0r s0me 0f their clips up here 0n y0utube. i liked their dem0 tape including the s0ng "pick a side" it 0pens with a sample fr0m a "D0lemite" film, 0ne of my fav0rites from blackspl0itation era films 0f the seventies. highly recommended!!!
You can definitely find videos of him where you can hear the entire kit. That whole channel is camera audio only, so as a whole I would stay away from it cuz that’ll be your gripe every time.
I definitely recommend you check out Alex Camarena of silent planet playing firstborn (ya’aburnee) live w the interlude; I’ve never seen someone play ghost notes the way he does. Also somehow at the end of the song he manages to hit all of his cymbals at once. Love your vibes man
Meinl Cymbals - Clay Aeschliman - "G.O.A.T." please react to this. One of the sickest displays of musical talent ive ever heard and the drums are what makes it
Surely Jojo was kinda overthinking the trad grip? It was just a carryover to drumset from playing the snare drum in a marching format where matched grip would have been ergonomically impractical.
Yea maybe but I he was going for the philosophical angle rather than ergonomical...in the video he talks about the slanted snare and all that as well so that just just one aspect of "why traditional?"
Suggestions I think you’ll truly enjoy: Iron Maiden (Niko uses single bass for everything), Lamb of God (The Faded Line, Desolation, 11th Hour, Pariah, or anything from Ashes Of The Wake album which I think you’ll personally really enjoy), Morbid Angel (Drum Check), Exodus (Deathamphetamine), Dry Kill Logic, Body Count (Manslaughter is a good album), Annihilator (something from For The Demented album) this should be enough to keep your channel busy for a few weeks and complete your transformation to metalhead! Keep doing your thing!
Alex Bent- Bladegrasp Priesthood from his time in Arkaik before he joined Trivium. He switches between traditional and match grip, and incorporates cowbell into technical death metal
