Well now the name makes sense. Dark Funeral / @darkfuneral Thank you for clicking! teespring.com/stores/garrett-... / garrettmillerdrums / garrettmdrums / garrettmillerdrums
I'm from Östersund, where Nils is from. He usually practiced in the basement of a local, well, "café" during the days. It's also something that's labeled as a cultural house~ish that are scattered through Sweden (pretty much every town), where the government supplies people with practicing spaces and shit. And let me tell you, Nils is a fucking beast. The entire house echoed that shit when he was down there, which was everyday pretty much, for years. The dude is a fucking beast.
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k9OflUFhPR4.html This was him at around 05-07 (can't remember the year exactly). Even then he was insane.
@@DeadGlassEyes Absolutely. And there's evidence all over youtube, he's the real deal & easily my favourite extreme metal drummer. I could watch his shit literally for hours in a row, just raw talent right there.
@@patska78 skill not talent... talent is something that one is born with; a skill is acquired... calling a skilled person talented diminishes the hours of practice and months of isolation they put to in to acquire the skill, IMO...
@@Gatapotata I have no doubt he has practiced his ass off as well. The reactor mentions "gotta be in marathon shape", i absolutely believe that keeping this consistent pace night after night on tour has to require a lotta physical training.
@@patska78 The dude must easily burn over 2000 calories per set. No joke I wonder what his diet looks like, you gotta be in good shape to blast like this night after night. Out on the road, with pretty shit nutrition most of the time I'd guess. It's hard as fuck, so much respect to these guys.
No drummer in metal today hits as hard as this guy at these tempos. He is an absolute animal! Also, he used double strokes for his tom fills. Guy is an alien.
Just a short anecdote: In an interview, Dark Funerals's singer claimed that in the post production of "Angelus exuro pro eternus" the producers added dynamical and rythmical variations to the drumtracks, to make them sound more human and less like a drum machine. Probably hyperbole, but it emphasizes how consistent of a drummer Nils is!
I went for a job with the Swedish forest ranger service back in the 90's, during my interview the Head Ranger told me that 666% of my job would be finding black metal bands that got lost in the forest during photoshoots. I had to refuse the job as I'm just not ready for that sort of responsibility.
Marthyn Janovich has a drum academy on RU-vid where they have drummers like Nils demonstrate their techniques. Nils uses fingers on his blasts but switches to full closed grip and flick wrist for power in his tom fills. Nils also finds the practice pad invaluable to his regimen as you can hear inconsistencies that needs to be worked on.
Dark Funeral is a Swedish Black Metal band. Black metal bands tend to be the ones that do the makeup thing and the band members also have names like Blackmoon and Lord Ahriman. I'm more of a death metal guy but have massive respect for bands like this.
Skill is a question of definition. Are black metal drummers fast as fuck? Yes, and speed can be a skill. But I've seen drummers who can blastbeat all day long, but ask them to do a shuffle groove or something like that, and they fall flat on their asses.
i think wearing heavy shoes with high spring tension in your pedal actually helps.if you have good technique, which he obviously has,you only push once downwards, with little force since the weight of the boot drags the foot down, the high spring tension pushes your leg up and so you need little force to keep blasting. not discrediting, just a thought about his style of playing.i love the guy
@@kumquatmagoo Darkside his drumming on Kriegsmachine is out of this world. In MGLA theyre great but it's more about complimenting M's music, whereas in Kriegsmachine he has a lot more freedom.
I suggested Hail Murder like two dozen videos ago. That's my go-to when I need cheering up. The sheer ridiculousness just makes me smile as soon as the video starts.
You're the only reaction channel I like watching man. Being a death metal drummer and guitarist myself I can say we're constantly bombarded with "you're just hitting stuff really fast, theres no talent, no feel" blah blah, but you notice all the little stuff we're doing. You make it clear that it is not easy what we play, anyways. I just wanted to say thank you for appreciating what we do, i smile when I see you react the same way I reacted when I first saw or heard a nasty drum riff, you're stoked to see other genres talent and can point it out, yes because you're also a Musician, but you're not a metal musician and you can still appreciate it all as much as us who live and breath the stuff. Btw, you should check my buddy Gabe Seeber, from the Kennedy veil, alterbeast, and decrepit birth. Dudes a machine
Craziest thing about these black metal drummers like Nils here is they do it in full corpse paint makeup, armor, and heavy calf or knee high boots, and their set goes for at least an hour long if not longer, and every song is played at about the same speed as this song here, and have to do it all over again the next night and so on and so on as their world tour goes on for over a month or more at a time. The stamina and agility of black metal drummers like this one here is insane, not to mention I can only imagine the long (or short) term injuries they must deal with too to their tendons or whatever over the years, especially Nils who has been playing like this professionally for over almost 25 years now.
My favorite drummer video reaction of all times. Thank you so much Garrett for making us discover such a beast! It’s been three years and dozens of watches, but I’m always in awe of Dominator’s performance and love your reaction to it. I’ll never forget you made it possible🙏🏽
Nils must be every front-of-house soundguy's dream come true. He is so consistent and powerful, not to mention really really really really really really really fun. I mean fast. (I only recently discovered Tim & Eric's Awesome Show)
Dude, I think I watched Nils' video a couple of times before I found you on YT, but I watched your video several times more than the original, because I love your reaction(s) added to it. Keep it on man, you are such a sincere guy!! Thumbs up! Greetz from Germany!!!
Nearly home gonna put this through my monitors. Wb Garrett hope you and yours have had a happy and healthy festive period. Slangevar from Bonnie Scotland
Dark Funeral does play full sets. They just co-headlined the North America tour with Belphegor. They played a pretty normal set 30-45 min. Nils got the stamina to do so.
Yay! The video I suggested a while back (I'm sure others have too, though). Note, he's playing in giant boots too haha. A big part of this performance is just how damn hard he hits the toms on the rolls. To answer your question: black metal. Thanks, Garrett! Keep up the great work...cheers from Canada
The sickest part about this cats skills is hes like 130 lbs soaking wet and plays with 2 b sticks and hes all wrist motion singles and doubles -no gravity blast he doesn't really need to gravity blast
As some say, Big things come in small packages. This Dude is no exception. 🤘🤘 I met him the second time seeing Dark Funeral with Morbid Angle. Real Cool Dude. I called him Lefty, he seemed kind of amused to hearing that.
One of my favorite drummers ! Surprised that u didn’t mention how hard he hits ! Those Toms were being dominated .. and he didn’t use gravity blast ! Pretty much no black metal bands use them what he did was add 16th note double bass on top of the traditional blasts making them sound even more extreme! Glad u did a reaction vid on him ! 👍
I used to listen to Dark Funeral back in the day. I have a new found respect for Dominator though after watching this. Damn hes fuckin sick! Still very hype to see what you think of JP Kaukonen. A very underrated drummer from Finland.
Heard their albums, Seen em play, on DVD, seen Nils(Lefty) with Dark Funeral live Twice. The second night they played with Morbid Angle. I met Nils outside the club by the bus. Real Swell Dude ta chat with as well. I'm always thrashin and headbangin at the shows ta catch all the drum technique. This video here was an injection of metal drumming memorandum. 🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Never throught a jazz drummer would make me reappreciate Dark Funeral this much. Please check the song 'Condemned" by Confessor, their drummer Is insane
It seems like you(in general) can't help but make a smelly face when listening to extreme metal lol. Actually my wife calls it the smelly face because when i make it she says "it looks like you just smelled something really bad "
You said it man :D It takes something primal to achieve this level of metal. I´m sure the techniques are quite optimized and personalized to make this most comfortable, but oh boy.. Dude is in shape!
The thing I like most about Nils is he hits really hard. His fills are pummeling, and his snare doesn't drop out during blasts. Total beast. Would make any band sound incredible.
Garrett “Vanilla” Miller (for anyone interested, I was going to give him this metal name before I even realised what his last name was, so clearly it was meant to be).
Poser and not real? Haha ya ok and triggers are cheating. i can't do it so it must be fake and sped up go back to your mom's basement and listen to ax7
Have my vote for chason westmoreland, or lyle coopers legion of the serpent from sick drummers early recordings of the faceless. Chasons ambidextrous blast beat patterns on the Hate Eternal - various songs video is insane, so much power for a drummer performing at that speed too. I'd mention his drum playthrough of the spiralling void with the faceless but his performance of 'Become One' with Fallujah is even more phenomenal 😍
Nils is the most insanely fabulous drummer I’ve ever seen in my entire life. I’m more into Buddy Rich, Ian Paice kind of traditional old school drumming but this is shit is just flat out insane. Hands down, hats off.
Dude you HAVE to see Matt Garstska's drum playthrough of Inner Assassins. The first half of the performance is unbelievable. The second half...is impossible.
This was my favorite video, I didn't particuparly like Nils' band, but I ended up listening to his drumming. The best thing to get those chops back is to start easy, then keep improving!
In the vein of Gene "The Atomic Clock" Hoglan: Garrett "The Atomic Reactor" Miller (sorry if it sounds crap, just first thing that popped into my head)
There's something to be said for guys like this who can blast like SOBs and still work in bits and pieces that fit in the context of what's going on. That dude's feet had smoke rising from them all throughout! Oh yes, you have to really be on top of your game to play metal, for sure.
fun fact: i just found out about his successor in this band, a guy called janne jaloma, he seems to play this stuff even cleaner, faster and more relaxed :o
He's very clean, very precise and very relaxed, but he doesn't have quite the same intensity as Nils. I don't mean to take anything away from Janne Jaloma, who is also a beast and a monstrous drummer. He brings the precision and cleanliness, Nils brings the extra level of brutality while still being very precise.
I've been waiting for you to react to Dominator. The level of momentary dumbfoundedness on your face man😂😂. I'm not a drummer, but I'm sure that I looked something similar when I first heard Dark Funeral. He's a beast.
