Hey everyone, I've been learning how to play BLEED by Meshuggah because on a previous reaction video • --Jazz Drummer Reacts ... I said I would if it got 2k likes. It currently has 4.1k lol. So here I am leaning it completely and along the way I've developed some tricks to help me. I wanna share them with everyone.
So far I'm about halfway through learning it at 80% speed. This video will be the first two parts and the following lessons will the other parts as I learn them.
Plz like and sub for more stuff like this and drop a comment down below if you want help learning a specific song or pattern. I feel like I could actually help and maybe I'll make a video in the future about it.
Thanks!

Hey guys if you have any patterns or songs that have been giving you problems. Maybe I can help or even make a video about out to learn them. Very often there are tricks you can use (methods) that can help speed up the process. So ya just leave a comment about tricky drum stuff you've come across and I'll try and help. 😀

I struggle a lot with learning more musical sounding drum fills and intros. Like how do you even start memorizing what is a borderline drum solo? I'm thinking stuff like the intro to Sole Survivor by Helloween, Babylon by Edguy, Falling Higher also by Helloween. Those very musical and "flowy" intros are pretty common whenever a Power Metal band gets hold of an above average drummer and I have no idea what to practice and how to approach learning that type of stuff.

@@LordBaktordude this is such a great question let me check these things out a formulate a good and concise answer.

@@LordBaktorhey dude so I just checked out the intro to sole survivor and here’s how I feel 😉. The intro is basically just a “simplish” shot sequence. The first set of shots are like a 3 over 4 I think and then there’s like a syncopation at the end to tie it together. 1. I would slow this down to like 60% 2. Just play the shots. 3. Then play the fills from the first set of shots all the way through (I think the shots repeat 3 times with fills in between.) 4. Then I would learn the approach to the second set and then the 3rd. 5. Improvise the fills in between in as simple a way as possible 8th or 16th notes with just the hands. 6. Once you’ve got all the different ways he approached the shots u could attempt to learn the fills. *final note would be only learn exact fills if u really want to emulate a drummer otherwise get as close as u can with your ear, otherwise you can get stuck on a song or section for way to long. *second last note is, all of this will still take a lot of work but if u repeat a process like this over and over u will get better and structuring a routine for learning things like this. Maybe obvious but figured I’d mention it.

Ahh dude I'll admit I was skeptical that you'd be able to cover all this in under 15 minutes, but you absolutely nailed it! Providing the notation as you're explaining each part is especially helpful. Last thing I'll add as an ex-drum teacher myself is this: playing it is one thing, but being able to EXPLAIN it and TEACH it takes a whole other level of skill. Breaking something this complex into digestible chunks is incredibly difficult, and I appreciate the undoubtedly considerable amount of time you put in off-camera to think up and execute these exercises. Looking forward to the next one!

@@yarpyarp85 np man, it's the least I can do. I love drummer reaction videos and you're taking it to another level by actually getting in there and doing it. To me it's a super interesting and fresh take on the reaction vid format, imo. If jazz and metal drumming have one thing in common it's DICIPLINE. Back in 2004-2006 I was the only metal drum teacher at my store and I tried so hard to get the jazz guys to check out guys like Flo Mounier (you know him, from Cryptopsy), Hannes Grossmann (Necrophagist - Note to self: Find good Necrophagist song to rec for reaction!), and John Longstreth (Needs no introduction, but Origin lol). They humored me, but didn't take it very seriously. Fast-forward 20 years and you've really completed the bridge I've been seeking between the genres... and I'm super interested to see how your channel grows and evolves with your foot planted firmly in each genre.

I definitely agree with what's being said here. I've been playing for over 30yrs, quit due to back injury and now trying g to "get back in the groove" lol. Been a metal head all my life, self taught but had an uncle who played, which inspired me to play (started when I was 8). Watched him a lot and learned quite a bit. Ever since I first heard this song I've been wanting to play, gotta love challenging songs lol. Your break down is absolutely incredible, will definitely be watching more and subscribed. Keep up the awesome work 🥁🤘😎🤘

Recently discovered your channel and subbed. Some drummers you might enjoy checking out: -Billy Rymer (Former drummer for Dillinger Escape Plan. Super technical player. Check out his playthrough of Prancer) -Chason Westmoreland (Played for a ton of bands. Absolute powerhouse and one of the highest endurance drummers I've ever seen. Check out his playthrough of Pathogenic Apathy with Hate Eternal, or his version of Slow Murder while he was playing with Oceano) -Luke Holland (His work with Jason Richardson are massive highlights in his abilities. He has a playthrough of the song 'Tendinitis' on his channel that's crazy) -Chris Turner (Drummer for Oceans Ate Alaska and is known for using zero triggers on any of his parts. Multiple playthroughs of stuff on his channel) -Aaron Kitcher (His work with Infant Annihilator is segmented and not one continuous take, but is technically impressive. He has live one take footage of him playing with Black Tongue) Your analysis has been super insightful and watching you discover artists and become more comfortable with the genre has been awesome. Keep it up man.

Hey, Matt! Killer job with this, man. It's so cool watching you go on this journey yourself, as well as guiding others. After you tackle Bleed, I'd LOVE to see you react to the playthrough of Monomyth by Animals as Leaders. The drummer is Matt Garstka. Here's a link to it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--xUqa6pYqnY.html There are compositional nuggets in there that absolutely blow me away every time I watch that video. One day if you had time could you do drum patterns like that for beginners? It starts already paced for intermediate drummers. Any of the drum bass drum tricks that Chris Adler has in his skill set (Laid to Rest you mentioned???) that sounds like this basic drummers would love to hear you play. Ever heard the drum pattern by EPICA in their song called Unleashed? What is going on there? A teacher at your level teaching at a basic level would be an awesome video.

@@yarpyarp85 Are you routing your signal chain through a DAW or similar? If so, I'd recommend using a limiter plugin on affected channels. If you're going straight through without a DAW, having a physical rack limiter would work but that's possibly overkill for your situation.

Fascinating to see the track broken down into segments and the theory of playing it put into practice. The only issue I have with the track though is that it is terminally boring. It has no dynamics and doesn't go anywhere. The vocalist is obviously very influenced by Randy from Lamb Of God, but the band doesn't have the groove and flow of LOG. Some early Megadeth with Gar Samuelson on drums would be interesting as you can hear his jazz influence clearly.
@rexlupis
@rexlupis Месяц назад
Meshuggah predates Lamb of God, or Burn the Priest as they were called before they were Lamb of God, by almost a decade. Randy didn't influence Jens at all, if anything, Randy was influenced by Jens, but Randy started doing metal vocals basically as a joke. He was more into the hardcore/punk scene before he joined Burn the Priest. Randy isn't a very influential vocalist by any stretch, and I can say this as someone who has been listening to them since they were called "Burn the Priest" and got their start on Mp3(dot)com. He's a solid vocalist, but he's far from innovative or influential.
