Dave, I just watched your My Sacrifice Creed video REACTs. Your reacts and analysis vibrated and exploded with my own. I rediscovered Scott Stapp and Creed about a year ago, and now live their music every day. After first watching My Sacrifice, outloud I said "what-was-that?" Awesome! Creed injects bursts of URGENCY into thier music. It grabs me, it's shocking, it's meaningful, it's music into my bones, it is beautiful. See you soon. Charles in Maryland

The fact the Tremonti, Phillips, and Marshal are still together in Alter Bridge says a lot of them as musicians that love to play together. Scott Stapp had a lot of issues that ended that initial Creed run, but is undeniable that he’s a great lyricist. Alter Bridge is my present favorite band, Creed is my sentimental all time favorite band.

The thing about Creed and Alter Bridge is Tremonti's tunning. In this particular song, he uses DADADD to give this unique and beautiful sound

Dave, I watched your Creed segment for the first time, and realy enjoyed your reactions and comments. At 79, I recently got hooked on Creed. I must have been sleeping when they bloomed. Now, I can't get enough. And My Sacrifice is just awsome. As you said, its got everything. I say Creed songs explode with URGENCY. After I watched My Sacrifice for the first time, I said "What was that?" You're awsome, too. Thanks. Charlie in Maryland

This might be my favorite video from this channel yet. Sad to say I stopped listening to them as a group mostly because I grew up and found other music but partly because everyone threw shade at them. To see someone listen to it and be like "WOAH, yeah man this is a song right here!"...felt like I was listening to it for the very first time as well. Electrifying. Great lesson to just be open and love what you love. There will always be people who see the same beauty in things you do. These are the people that deserve your time and energy, not haters.

Yeah, I used to be kind of the same way. I think most people probably go through that, thinking that they have to dislike things because society tells them to. Society says, "that band is trash" or "than band is for chicks" and you kinda just go with it as a kid. It wasn't until my mid-to-late twenties that I started accepting that actually Nickelback's second album was excellent, and I can enjoy it without actually caring what anyone thinks about that. And in fact I came to realize that... basically everyone I know actually likes Green Day, we had all just agreed they were bad because society said so. lol My point is, if you love it, there's a good chance other people do. Don't change your tastes for society, find the people who agree with you. lol I mean, Creed is a mutli-platinum band with a diamond record. It's funny how society kept saying they were bad, but eleven million people bought Human Clay. lol I would LOVE to see this channel do "Hangnail" or "Too Bad" by Nickelback, or really anything from Silver Side Up that isn't "How You Remind Me." That song is so played out, and sometimes gets recognized as "Nickelback's only good song" but... that whole album was awesome. lol

"Delivering the song for the sake of the song. Not you." You just encapsulated Creed with that observation. Their success and their failure. 3 of the 4 of them were about giving their best for the success of the band, each other. But when it becomes an entirely different existence for one person in the group things fall apart, especially when it's such an integral person like the frontman. Time heals a lot of wounds and I hope the years have helped those who needed to grow and mature and I wish them success if they do continue forward as a band. I'll always have the music!

Tremonti did the guitar work, Stapp wrote all the lyrics for Creed. Each member of the group had their strengths and knew their place and where/when to act. That's why they were so successful. I'm sure it felt stifling for the other band members to be on the outside when it came to lyrics but you can't argue with results. Outside(and inside) forces pulled them apart which sucks but that's what happened. Tremonti and the others roles in AlterBridge are different. I love them but they never have and never will explode like Creed did. Their lyrics and sound do not transcend genres and grab people from everywhere like their work in Creed was able to. AlterBridge is loved by rockers, I love them, but other than a few songs, mainstream is not their place. I don't think they have a problem with that and are happy in their pocket. What I'm curious about is how things are working now that Creed has reformed. I'm sure the band members could never go back to the way things worked before. And I think Stapp has been humbled greatly since then.

Creed reminds me of Lynyrd Skynyrd in the precise rehearsed delivery of all their songs. Neither varies much if any from the recorded version when on stage and they deliverr it the same way every time when on stage. Neither band allowed much improvisation but rather delivered a strong concise powerful rehearsed rendition practicality 100% of the time.

Also, as far as people hating them... I've heard rumor, not sure if it's true, that record labels started torpedoing rock music on purpose starting around 2005-2006 in order to try and "get rid" of rock as a music genre in favor of more R&B, rap, and other stuff. "Diversify" their music labels as it were. As part of this campaign there was a coordinated viral effort to denigrate or otherwise convince fans to turn on the musicians that they'd been listening to and enjoying for over a decade. One band that got hit particularly hard by this was Nickleback, maybe you've heard of them. But around the late 2000's early 2010's the labels started turning away rock acts altogether unless it was a returning act that was already big, and the only reason they're letting those acts come out is because there's still a huge demand for rock despite the campaigns to turn people off to it. Basically phasing out rock music altogether. So remember kids, if those rumors are true then Rock didn't die, it was killed... and the people who killed it have names and addresses.

This is one of the earlier songs I learned to play on guitar, and it's in a really cool tuning of DADADD. 6 string bar chords resonate beautifully. It's pretty wild how much more Mark is capable of on guitar than what he played while with Creed. A great example of intentionality/discretion.

Hey man. Just found the channel. Love the respect for the songwriting of mark and Scott and Brian. They’re still making music the same way but with 20 years of experience and practice and honing as the band Alter Bridge. They brought in an amazing tenor vocalist, very different from Scott, and basically perfected this slightly progressive hard rock genre. Check out Pawns and Kings (the song but also the album) from them. The level of craftsmanship is off the charts, without getting overly wanky. They still respect letting the song be what it needs to be, and that is one of my favorite qualities. Shut up and write is going to be my new motto regarding music going forward.

8:31 I love how right here you say they're playing their parts around the song. Which is, as far as I remember, how they made their music. Most of these songs came from Scott's journal. Now someone correct me but I think he started writing all this when he was checked into a mental hospital. I've always been a fan of Creed and watched their documentary years ago so I'm a little fuzzy in the details but that sounds right.

I don't think people get jealous, I think certain stuff gets overplayed on the radio, listening fatigue sets in, and music tastes change (or the bands just aren't making music like they used to anymore). Happened to Nickelback and 3 Doors Down too. The only reason it hasn't happened to Nirvana is Kurt killed himself, and the only reason it hasn't happened to Red Hot Chili Peppers is their music (old and new) remains eclectic and funky enough that it still stands out. I only mention these last two bands because it seems like EVERY time I turn on the radio ONE of them is on, and you can't PAY radio stations to play Creed, Nickelback, or 3 Doors Down.

What Mark brings to Alter Bridge in the form of complex but catchy melodies, he brought to Creed in the form of simple but expertly delivered hooks. That was the secret to Creed's music to me, Mark was a MASTER at creating hooks. Alter Bridge isnt soo hooky and thats fine, thats not the band's goal. But Creed was in a place and a time in rock music when if you were as big as they were you needed a singer that was charismatic and a had a standout voice, and a guitarist that knew how to create memorable hooks that we could all hum to.

"Who cares if they're sophisticated or not" Simple songs are actually more likely to succeed. It pays to be be subtle about your sophistication... so the foundation of the song (instruments, chord progression etc) should be simple so you can spend more time on the subject matter, or telling a story that people want to hear... because THAT is what makes a song great. People want to hear a story, they want something to relate to. If it sounds good because it's relatively simple and well constructed, then boom you've got a hit. (Don't mind me, I've never picked up an instrument in my life and I can kind of sing around a campfire when I'm drunk, but this just seems to me like it would be obvious)

I think the negativity around Creed stems from his unique voice being thought as cheesy, religious connotation is a big one, then the over the top kind of nature. But yeah, I feel like Creed kind of ‘deserved better’ even though they did sell a ton, but critically they were laughed at.
