For those who don't have formal training in piano or Jazz this is absolutely valuable. Many years ago in college I study music theory but it focused primarily on classical. it did wonders for my ability to understand music overall, but we all know jazz is a very unique language. Thank you for this awesome video.

Kudos for the Video! Forgive me for chiming in, I am interested in your opinion. Have you heard about - Riddleagan Smart Hands Remedy (should be on google have a look)? It is an awesome exclusive product for learning piano fast without the hard work. Ive heard some decent things about it and my BF at very last got cool results with it.

I've seen lots of similar explanations and setups, but i think this one sets the bar! Most intuitive explanation I've seen. It was really fantastic! It was actually perfect. Everything about it, from the placement of everything, from the keyboard, the virtual keys, the musical staff to the explanation, oh and even the Debussy ref...bc as somebody who has a solid background in classical piano, this jazz thing really feels like a different dialect, a different language at first, but after a few months it feels like a different dialect. And I can really see/feel how this approach will enhance my classical abilities as well. Anyway, main pt and bottom line, keep it up Jonny!

Tysm for this. I'm 15 and trying to learn jazz but a lot of musicians lock this type of content behind a paywall, which is understandable but also not available to someone like me. But this video covers so much... And for free! Thanks again

Very good lesson, it's very well explained. I wish this existed 17 years ago. For all those who wonder why ppl use the major sixth in minor chords even though it's not in the scale (at least it's not in the i chord) it's basically because the minor sixth doesn't really work in the voicing (it's the same as why ppl omit the 11 in major and dominant chords) AND even in classical music, when playing in a minor key, the scale transforms into natural minor, harmonic minor and melodic minor, so you could say that the major sixth comes from the melodic minor scale.

It's wonderful how you help make Jazz UNDERSTANDABLE for those of us who are new to the subject. So far your videos end up helping me to clean up and clarify the CONFUSIONS I end up in watching other teachers. Hats off to you Johnny. Now, if you could only help put an end to my quest to better understand MODAL JAZZ, you would become "the cat's pajamas," indeed. I get what all of the modes are and how they are derived, but for some reason, I have just not been able to crack them into fun, enjoyable playing experiences. With thanks for all you do.

Such a fantastic explanation! Crystal clear! I thought about these 7,9,11,13 chords so many times and understood almost nothing although I played the piano for 15 years, studied music theory for 4 years at secondary musical school the way that definitely didn't work for me. The only thing I miss now is a piano. I think I will buy it and play jazz & pop again.

Great video and explains 'where chords come from' in an easy to understand way. Having found a chord there is another way of thinking this through and can be quicker to remember - playing Em7 with C Bass = Cmaj9. Play Gb7 with C Bass = C7b5b9. In other words work out the chords within chords. C9 sus4th (sometime called C11 I believe) = C triad plus Bb triad. C9 = Gm with C bass or C triad plus Gm triad. And so on

my former piano teacher played a german piece for young children that was composed to help them easily fall in sleep. The piece is called ""all my ducks.."
