In finance circles there is a term - "the smart money" - who always come out ahead. The smart musicians listen and learn from those who don't really "think about it" so much as hear it. Tony Winston and other great players have the feel of the keyboard. Bach was credited with the remark that it really wasn't all that hard to play the keyboard if you know which keys to strike. Technique is important but even more so is the musicianship like the part of an iceberg that is below the surface of the ocean. Great player and teacher! The smart musicians know.

I'm only at the level where I can play 3 or 4 major scales and a couple or arpeggios, but I find your videos super interesting nonetheless 🙂 great presentation and nice calm tone for teaching. Thank you for these videos 🙂

Gotta love Tony. You’ve helped me tremendously with the Blues turnaround videos. I’ve completely transformed my playing plus I am experimenting more with different scales

I like very much the diminished scale but than on G7(outlining E TriAD)resolving to EbTriad on Cm7 that's why I try to avoid it on the C7, but the way you played it sounded just nice and smooth...

I studied this song but my teacher did't help me with the scales this is where you come in..Your Db Lydian dominant I always strugled with...I tried of course altered, but I like now more the Lydian, more musical, what you say fitting the melodie...also the locrian #2 over the halfdim still something I do often but still helpful to see that I am not the only one...and last time I did the like you one bar C7 or arpeggiationg the Gm7b5...&C7 so you let me go back to important thing that was out of my system I love the Locrian #2

Would you talk about what you're doing in the intro? Sounds a bit like Hank Jones' intro (Live at Jazzhus Slukefter 1983), which is amazing.

In your worksheet at fifth to last measure you show first two beats with the notes of a D "locrian #2" scale (D, E, F, G, Ab, Bb, C) but by mistake you label it as "locrian". (A locrian scale would have Eb instead of E). On the video you correctly refer to it verbally as D "locrian #2" and point out the same scale notes are also F "melodic minor ascending". All in all this is a fantastic video. Am sorry worksheet is 16 bars while lead sheet is 32 bars. The last five bars of lead sheet are not covered in the worksheet. Anyway, thank you for all this great work!

Greta work Tony love this J Van Heusen Tune and i enjoyed yr analyses and tips and entusiam Do u think we are trying to re invented Classical music ? I ask because u hear Bach a lot of the time and i was listening to a 1942 song Dark is the night music originaly by Brahms which had an almost identical cord structure to Alone Togethet ? We know a lot of the composers of the great american song book had recieved Classical traing before fleeing Russian or Nazi persecution ? But even A C Jobims Insenitez is almost the same as Cgopins Etude in Cm ? Harold Arlens Somewhere over the rainbow is from something ,earlier and Cole Porter is very rich as u know His Night and day run down is used in a lot of compasirions ? I find it fascinating and Its all good maybe me ear is gradually improving ? Thanx again mate greetings from Highlands of Scotland

As always love your videos :) Thank you very much for your valuable and great insights my teacher.. Like the series of open voicings, rootles and improv to a certain standard very much. it gives one a complete approach to the song.. maybe you could do a lesson on INVITATION and DOLPHIN DANCE about open voicings, rootles voicings and improv in the future? Best regards from germany..

what are you playing in the intro? are you pedaling on the turnaround? C-7 / F-7/ Bb7
@TonyWinston
@TonyWinston 4 года назад
Basically yes. I'm using the "everything works over a pedal point", theory. You can get more adventurous...I'm doing 3- 6-2-5 over V.
