💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
There are so many jazz scales and chord types.
How are we ever going to figure out what scales work over what chords?
This video is the ultimate guide for which jazz scales you can use over every chord type.
In the lesson, I give you a go-to answer for all the chord types, including their variations and extensions.
This is very valuable information.
I also demonstrate the jazz scales for each chord type in a different tune, so we hear them in a musical context.
I hope you enjoy this lesson and find it beneficial.
Let me know what you think in the comments.
Thanks! :)

I love these 'ultimate guide' videos - I regularly refer to your Shell Chord video. I wonder if you would consider doing a similar guide on 'Jazz/Blues Lines over every chord / Progression'. I'd love to see a video where you give maybe 2 or 3 examples of a standard/typical Jazz line that you could play over each chord type - Dom, Minor7, Major7, m7b5 etc. Or Maybe the Roman Numeral might be better "Line over the I Maj7 or the IV Major 7 or the Dom II chord' ? And then section 2 of the video could be 'standard' Jazz lines that work over the most common chord progressions: Major ii-V-I, Minor ii-V-I, Rhythm Changes etc. Might be asking a bit much, but I think a lot of people (me included) would find it useful to have a set of lines to start to use over every chord/progression in a Standard, which can then be adapted / manipulated. At the very least it would get me on the right road.

Very useful info on a topic which I need to focus.Often we need small groups of 6 or 8 notes to play in 4 seconds.

a comment: usually in discussions of what to play over dominant 7th chords, there is a distinction made between chords that resolve up a 4th (use mixolydian) and those that don't resolve up a 4th (use lydian dominant). So, for example, E7 to A use E mixolydian, while Bb7 to A use Bb lydian dominant. another comment: great work on this, thanks!

Your explanation of scales for major chords supports the underlying key very well. However, my understanding of using the lydian scale in jazz is that it removes the "avoid note," so that it is "always" the preferred scale. I guess the practical implications here are that everyone in the band needs to be thinking about the harmony of the tune in the same way.
@alainmellier2630
@alainmellier2630 Месяц назад
There's no problem playing the perfect fourth on a major seventh chord if it's on a weak beat. If you have several chords in the same scale that resolve on degree I, like a II-V-I progression for example, why would you play lydian in I? I play Lydian when there's an isolated major seventh chord within the progression, otherwise I play Ionian (which is what my ears prefer).
@soundguitar
@soundguitar Месяц назад
You're right about the lydian scale making every scale note a chord tone or chord extensions, so you can sit on any note of the scale, but depending on the harmonic context, your ears might prefer a regular major scale sometimes, so just go by taste and preference and you'll be fine! :)
@takeawaybenji
@takeawaybenji Месяц назад
@alainmellier2630 There's also no problem with playing an augmented 4th since the harmony over a 1M7 will not include the 4th or the augmented 4th.

You should write a book. This would be a good appendix somewhere. I don't play this type of music but it confirmed how i might solo through some simpler chord changes. Also, what was the name of the program you are using in the video? Thanks
