In the opening of this video (the second in a series about solo transcription) you hear me play a transcription of one of my own recorded solos-it’s harder than you might think! This kicks off a discussion of the rationale and strategy for doing what many if not most jazz musicians would consider to be an essential part of learning the jazz language, which consists of more than just notes, in the same way that spoken language consists of more than just words. Common questions are considered, e.g., which musicians you should transcribe and whether you should slow down the recording to make the notes easier to hear.
ABOUT THIS SERIES
This is the 12th video in the Jazz Tactics series, exploring elements of playing jazz music, especially improvisation, based on my book of the same name and a university course that I’ve taught for over thirty years. The sequential videos in this series will provide a solid foundation of understanding of the principles and practices of jazz improvisation, on both and aural and intellectual levels. Below are some suggestions to get you started:

I'm a drummer and, although my knowledge in the field of improvisation and harmony is pretty limited, i gotta admit that even I followed along flawlessly. you did a fantastic job at explaining this!

Bravo😀 This is exactly what you need to do to learn to play Jazz. The transcription, not only of our instrument (the trumpet) but also of others. In all styles, much better than all the transcriptions of solos already made in books. Which are often wrong. For the ear : Listening-Transcribing-Playing-Recording your impros and Perfecting your own style. That's the key. I hope that many musicians will follow your video instead of just doing exercises and scales. Transcribing Jazzmen's solos is music, the rest... exercises often useless.
@chasesanborn
@chasesanborn Год назад
I wouldn't use the term 'useless', but exercises and scales on their own do not a musician make. As I frequently say, if you do nothing but transcribe solos you'll learn the language. If you do everything BUT transcribe solos, the outcome is far less certain. Thanks for the comment!

Hey Chase I enjoy your videos, wonder if you have tried Warburton mouthpieces?
@chasesanborn

A long time ago I experimented with the modular kit from Warburton. I've been on GR for more than twenty years, and Stork before that. I have spent a fair bit of time with Terry Warburton, and admire his energetic dedication to innovation.

been away for a while.. but that was a good one. I'll try the last note first idea. i've sort of stumbled around that a couple times on my own but it think i'll go all in! (note: sometimes it seems like your video is just a bit out of synch with the audio. don't know if its me or my connection.)
@chasesanborn
@chasesanborn Год назад
Welcome back! Transcribing the last note you hear first is a function of tonal memory. Even if that's the only note you get on the first pass, on subsequent listens you are working towards a target which makes it easier to hear the notes leading up to it. As far as audio/video sync issues, the videos in this series have been substantially re-edited and it's possible that some segments of audio might have detached. (I don't recommend that anyone hire me as a video editor! :)

Only learning a part of a solo is not the same as reading part of a book because if I listen to a song all the way through, I have done the equivalent of reading an entire book. Learning the entire solo of a particular musician on the song isn’t what it takes to fully understand it. That also implies (within the analogy) that a non writer wouldn’t be able to understand a book unless they went in with the approach of using that writer’s language as inspiration for their own writing even if they read the whole book. Some people don’t want to learn the entirety of other musicians solos on their instruments. That doesn’t mean they may not be able to sing along with the whole solo.

If you listen to a song or a solo multiple times, you'll learn more than you do on the first listen. I'd argue that the same is true for reading a book or watching a movie. Transcribing, to me, is intensive and repetitive listening during which a lot more than the notes seeps in. If you can sing a solo all the way through, whether out loud or in your head, I'd argue that you have transcribed it. Playing it on your instrument takes the process a step or two further, but whether or not one finds value in that is a personal decision, as is every element of learning to play music. In the end, everybody finds their own way. Thanks for sharing your viewpoints!
