Most important part of speakers for recording is understanding the speakers you're listening to and how they relate to other common systems. One popular brand is very bass heavy, people mix on them, but when they take their recording somewhere else they wonder where the bass went. JBL is know for crispy highs so have to remind yourself of that. No matter what speakers you get do a few mixes on them, then take that mix to friends and other places and listen to it and varous speakers so you can learn the sound of what your speakers. This is a big part of why all studios have Yamaha NS 10's they aren't the greatest sounding speaker, but they are a speaker all the working pros know the sound of and know how it will relate to the real world. Knowing your speakers is more important than the speaker themselves.
you always adjust levels , but you dont need you speakers for that . You can use a tool to tell you how loud things are . RMS or linear . Just like that , you can mix with any speaker system , the story about how mix sounds good if mixed on this , or that , its just not true . Marketing . I am a producer for decades , and i can mix on anything . I have tools to tell me exactly whats going on . In all aspects . Frequency , levels , dynamics , you name it . So ill probably get this pair . Not because of their size of sound , but because of the shape .
@Bradley Johnson ive learned it in school and by working , if you mean theory if you mean what tools for example izotope tonal balance will tell you how youre song sounds you dont even need to hear it . Waves and Neuton 2 will have all the plug ins and tools you will ever need .
@@amlanchakraborty655 I make EDM and I have already ordered these... But everyone says they're not the best when it comes to mixing the bass. What's your take?
@Sanjay C, Thank you Thank you, I have been looking for a more affordable monitor pair, and from what I’ve seen in your video, these are perfect, I really enjoy watching the videos you post on your channel, it would be awesome to work with you one day!!!
Very well presentation! I actually bought this pair after watching your video. However, I feel like a need to a subwoofer too. I've also read great reviews for the JBL LSR10S. Can you detail it a bit how you connected your 104s to the LSR310S? What cables do I need, and where do they go? Thank you!
I have these for almost one year now, and I can fully agree that they put a smile on my face as well. They look so cool, fresh, they are very well made, and I love their sound. Personally, I call them "the eggs", cause of how they look. Great value for the money! :)
i have monitor stands from my previous setup and the only reason i didn't buy these monitors is the shape. they won't fit any monitor stand. so there is your question, yes they need to look flat. they actually don't need to look in a specific way.
I just bought a pair of these in Denmark. I found them at a site named gear4music for 102 us$. When space and budget is tight I'd say it's a great buy.
Sanjay C I've ordered them.. and get them Wednesday , I was going to get some hs5s but I think there over kill for what I need right now.. so these should do the trick nicely I hope. I'll let you know! 🤘
I'd only give them 3 out of 5 stars if I'm honest... First I tried the the big jack style leads but the amount of noise was unbearable , I have a Roland quad capture but even with the noise cancelling switched on there was still a noticeable hum , in the end I had to use the head phone socket output on my quad capture and this gives a good low noise floor, but if I then connect head phones to the speaker head phone socket I can hear a wierd noise in the background , which you can only hear when there is no other sound passing through the speakers... With this all put aside the actual sound quality of the speakers is pretty good and I can use them to make and listen to music.. so for the price I'm happy enough, just not blown away!
Hi, I have such monitors, and a sound card, I connected it all via TRS cables, and the sound through BT is many times louder than through TRS, maybe I need to connect it with TS mono-RCA mono cables? Don’t you have such a problem? Maybe there’s a problem with my sound card? Or my JBL? I need the clearest and loudest sound to mix
The only issue I've had with it is the connection between the 2. 3 times now the right speaker has gone out and I've had to clip the wire and strip a new section. Other than that, I love these guys. They work really well, pretty even on sound. Solid 9.5/10
You should tin the wires before you put them into the connectors. The clip connectors over time can crush bare wire and cause the connection to degrade.
Yes, its difficult to find cheaper studio monitors. If you can't afford studio monitors, just use whatever you have. Just starting making music :-) Don't let anything stop you.
You are a musician! How did you not hear that the sound is plastic and cheap. For example I tried connecting through an sound interface and directly to MacBook, same result - low quality sound. Power wires are poorly inserted into the monitor socket. I did not expect this quality from JBL. My wife and I are not musicians, but when we hooked up and listened this JBL, we both looked at each other, packed back , and sent it back. Your review is more like an advertisement than a true review.
Hi Sanjay! First off all thx for your immense effort - i found the videos very helpful. Now a question: I just ordered the speakers, but i wonder where to connect to the subwoofer. is it the "Extension"-output? Thx 4 Info!
Great question. You'll need to get a powered subwoofer that is meant to be used with studio monitors (get one that has 1/4" jacks or RCA inputs). You will route the output from your audio interface or computer to the subwoofer first and then the subwoofer will have outputs that route to the JBL 104s.
Hey, San! Greetings from Argentina! Even tried the "JBL Control 1 Pro" pair, should I go for them instead the 104's? They have a 5.25in speaker instead. Should that guarantee a better monitoring experience? I am in doubt. Thanks! PS: Full specs jblpro.com/en/products/control-1-pro
@@SanjayC Thanks for your answer! I'll be looking forward for your budget monitor comparison too :-) Update: I just realized that the control one's are PASSIVE (facepalm), so I would need an AMP between the interface and the monitors. Not so budget option!
@@mauroribot @Sanjay C I still have my old beloved Control1, but never used them for my synth or computer. I am curious what would be the adequate Amp for these passive monitors!? Are there any good resources or infos about such a setup? BTW, I also own an old and probably the "cheapest" Harman/Kardon Hifi-Amp. Can it be used? Or does it have to be specific studio gear? Thanks in advance.
Hi Sanjay thanks for all the great videos. What else would you recommend at this size. Other than the iLouds that is. Talking purely about portability. Thanks again :)
These are not 150 dollars they are almost 200 dollars and I think if your low on money or low on space you should buy a pair of jbl 5 inch monitors or krk or presonis would be a better option
NS10's are garbage failed hIFI speakers, people only keep them in studios as reference, just use any old stereo speakers, NS10's are the most overrated "monitors" ever.
Which is the best monitors pair among JBL Professional NANO K4-4" Full-range Powered Monitor Pair & JBL Professional 1 Series, 104 Compact Powered Desktop Reference Monitors for Mixing- Mastering & Music Production ...
I have some edifier bookshelf speakers as my monitors currently cuz they fit my budget at the time, but those are very sharp looking! I personally do like the look of the rockits and the Yamahas cuz they look like a raw studio monitor that is gonna look classic almost a bit of nostalgia lol
@@SanjayC I like them a lot! I don't use them a lot for mixing but I listen to music on them when I'm doing homework or things like that and they are great! I use headphones normally for music cuz I'm making it at night so I can't wake anyone up haha but yeah my ears aren't like amazing for determining quality just because I haven't used a ton of different speakers and things like that but I like them and they look great!
@@trippybeats4823 I was there too but, I'm going with the Newer PreSonus E5's because of the front port's & the variable space adjustments. Not only that but, I need some bass but not too much like the Rokit's & some other's. I do need to preserve real estate but, I know I'd regret getting the 104BT's instead of a class a/b dedicated bi-amp design. I can't stand having those tacky red & black cheap speaker wire's going all the way across to the slave/passive speaker. I It's weird too right now because the JBL 305MKII's are $30 cheaper than the newer PreSonus Monitor's. The reviews are great also! Since I can't get a powered studio sub yet, I'll manage with the E5. Dedicated class a/b amps also draw less current than class D amp's. Class D's are better suited for sub's anyhow. JBL should have made the 104bt passive speaker wireless so no cheap looking wire's get strung across or, something else instead of that tacky outdated option. Come on guys! Supposed to be busting out with the latest technology like your waveguides yo! Sheesh What's so hard about placing port's towards the front face of a monitor also? Is it really better to deflect lower frequencies off a wall sitting on a desk? Some work area's/studio's have too many objects or, no place to even consider that method. So, JBL get back in the lab & give the professionals what they really want from a modern monitor. I can give a few tips right off the bat but, I'm not getting a jbl paycheck. Yet. 🤓
Hi! I have a traitor S4 MK3 and I'm having cracking sounds issues from left speaker on low sounds :( How do you recommend me to connect it to mi 104 speakers?? Can I use booth mains out from my controller and connect it to the speakers? I play techno and I'm frustrated because of these cracking sounds :(
If you can, yes. Otherwise you may not hear the sub frequencies of the kick drum. However, many people make great music even without a sub in their studio.
I feel speakers with metal fronts or any coverage disrupts sound vibrations etc... doesn’t give the speaker the right breathe. Also the amplifier components and others need to be right.
I like everything, but a little concerned about the lows, it is that noticeable? I like to use low sounds, even if they are not the main thing. thanks!
Hey sanjay! Great review. May i know how an i connect this to my audient id 14. Are the cables required comes with the box or will i need sole extra cables ?
Hi Sanjay! thank you for the amazing reviews and tutorial, great job. i'm a beginner in studio recording and i need some help to set-up my Juno DS88 with a pair of monitors and connect it to my macbook. can you suggest me a basic setup to hear the patterns and sounds of the JUno through the monitors and to record ? ( i thought about a pair of stereo monitors like the JBL or the Mackie CR5-XBT , one focusrite audio interface but i don't know which model has the possibility to connect in input the synth in stereo ). sorry for my confusion and thanks for any help.
This speakers are better than jbl flip 6? Should I consider this one over flip 6?? I'm not a sound producer or anything like that!! But I love to listen musics!! I listen to music almost all day long!! Should consider it or not?? Thank U🙂
Thanks. Old video but I found a pari of these used in mint condition for 100.00 and wondering if it is possible to buy a subwoofer and have these and the subwoofer connected to my computer for video editing? IS there a simple way or even a way to have these and woofer connected through one 3.5 jack cable at the same time for my desktop computer (Mac) that only has 3.5 input?
Hi Sanjay, great channel, which sub would you recommend for a 26qm room? And would you first invest in basstraps to get more clarity in the bad frequencies? Thanks and greets Marek
I've had bass traps before and they didn't make a huge difference to me. But it depends on your room - every one is different. I have a 8" sub (Presonus Temblor T8 amzn.to/2RzWb75). For my room its good enough.
A side theory…I’ve researched a lot…A LOT on the MacBook Pro 16” 2021 The speakers of the laptop have similar frequency response to this speaker(60hz to 20khz)… Even if you made a video on the MacBook for music, many didn’t mention regarding its frequency response… It turns out to be a portable solution for music producers… What do you think?
Thanks for the great review! Perfect timing, I have been looking for this very type of thing, i.e., inexpensive studio monitors. These look like they will be perfect for my current needs. Thank you so much!
I just bought some nice portable desktop studio monitors the presonus Eris 3.5 for 100 bucks they look and sound great I'm not really a fan of the look of these JBL's but to each it's own
Honestly, any subwoofer will work. But make sure you get one that has the right inputs and outputs. You'll need RCA or 1/4 inch connections as opposed to just speaker wire connections. I have the Presonus T8 sub which works well. They are not cheap, but you'll be happy.
@@SanjayC nice! I'm thinking of adding the Presonus t8 as well. How do you recommend me to connect it? RCA to JBL 104 and XLR to T8? Greeting from Madrid San!
You won't get much bass out of these. You'll need a subwoofer. If you need to hear better bass, you should get a 5" speaker at least. See my recommendations here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-adyZDVLOTTE.html
